I can't see the appeal. Either I'm simply not in the target market or I'm missing something. I signed up for the beta, but I was one of 65,000 at the time - just a few hours after the announcement - so it's a pretty forlorn hope!

I'm interested but just can't be bothered with the beta.

It only takes a couple of minutes to become eligible, and you get 150xp (should you remotely care about such things). The odds of being chosen are so low that you don't really need to worry about it beyond that.

Controller announced. Well...it looks interesting..wonder how it feels.

The Steam Controller is designed to work with all the games on Steam: past, present, and future. Even the older titles in the catalog and the ones which were not built with controller support. (We’ve fooled those older games into thinking they’re being played with a keyboard and mouse, but we’ve designed a gamepad that’s nothing like either one of those devices.) We think you’ll agree that we’re onto something with the Steam Controller, and now we want your help with the design process.

it looks futuristic as ****, but what would moving around with a trackpad feel like?

That's the million dollar question... Perhaps not best ever controller, but at least, it seems to have the most potential. It could be a colossal failure. Still, it's fascinating.

No doubt. Valve would have play tested the shit out of this so they obviously think it works. I can't wait to try it.

I love the sound of the controller - especially when it is apparently compatible with games not designed for controllers. I've set up Joy2Key for some basic control schemes like Civilization and Football Manager, but sticks don't replicate a mouse well.

PC gamers make such little sense.

KB+M only way to play games. Steam brings out controller, best controller ever...

Interesting concept anyway. Would hope it'll be a universal controller and not just something for the Steam hardware.

Oh KB+M will always be the best format to play games but I don't think anyone has ever called KB+M a "controller". HBK makes such little sense.

Out of all the controllers, the Steam one looks the best and the devs comments pretty much back it up.

I never called KB+M a controller either...? But I know many a PC gamer that has complained about any form of control other than KB+M being next to impossible to use, I seriously doubt this changes things that drastically.

And devs are really going to come out and bash it...

So then explain how this makes ANY sense at all then.

Because PC gamers say that KB+M is the only way to play games but when Steam make a controller suddenly controllers are worth using.

This will still have the same inherent issues that PC gamers have moving from KB+M to any form of controller.

There's a reason why various games have controller support with the mircosoft usb controller long before this. Especially with certain genres. You don't have to use it.

Again you make no sense.

KB+M is different than a controller, so Steam bringing out a controller could still make it the "best controller" even whilst using KB+M.
Read: "PC gamers say that KB+M is the only way to play games".

This is what doesn't make sense, not that it might be the best controller. The fact is that PC gamers say that controllers aren't worth their salt when it comes to a comparison to KB+M so why would this be anything different.

It's that controllers suddenly matter now to PC gamers that doesn't make sense.

Oh okay so it's people having an opinion about something that you have a problem with?
It's people changing their mind because Steam tells them to change it.

I'm a PC gamer, with a number of friends who are also PC gamers. This thinking really isn't that common... KB+M is the only way to play FPS' and RTS', not every game under the sun. Stuff playing a platformer with KB+M, I use my 360 controller for that stuff.

Still, my current setup uses a 110 inch projector and 7.1 surround, and I have both a wireless 360 controller and wireless KB+M hooked up so I can use it when I please. Really not that difficult to do, so this SteamBox stuff doesn't interest me that much. I don't understand why living room PC's are still so underused. I've got PC's in a number of rooms of my house acting as media centers...

Still, I think this controller is a step in the right direction (should they execute it well) but obviously not preferable over KB+M.
