Ah, so we live in the past.
A bit like "the Premierships a cakewalk".
Time to drag the old club kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
Please, please, please don't ever knock that line in our club song. The last time that thought gained momentum (1983) some looney "officially" changed the song in favour of some half-arsed ditty that said "there is just one team we favour" and lasted for about a year or two. Cor Blimey! I NEVER want to hear it again or any other variant. The song is just fine the way it is.

So we had to up our Offer from 4 to 5 Year Contract?
Feeling hard done by Dave?
$550,000 a year is under the odds, he would have been offered by other sides.
You want loyalty from every player yet when they show it in spades you question the minutia........
This board is getting seriously "mentally ill"

Now I'm sure this wil become a "f@rk me he ain't elite, he's barely top 6 thread.
But after the hatred that was exhibited game thread on Sunday I feel there needs to be a bit of perspective.
Yes, yes, I'm a Sidey fan and have a connection to his family, so bash me as bias.
But....
He took unders to sign his current contract with CFC. Against the advice of his manager.
Not many modern AFL players, particularly one who grew up as a supporter of one of those suitors, would do that.
And for clarification, his childhood team is not a contender so they would have loved to get him.
No person, Sidebottom included, does not see those dinky attempts at passes that fail to go the distance or miss the target and despair. It's been a problem his whole career.
For me, this is an issue that the coaching group has failed to address. It's an obvious fault that should/could be coached out.
For me, I love the fact, yes fact, that within 60 seconds he can be clearing the ball in the backline, then recieving it at the forward 50. Huge tank and one of the very few at CFC that run both ways. Wills himself to the contest time and time again when others simply blow up.

I'm a fan, no doubt. When I ordered last years limited edition jumper I put the 22 on it. Such is my respect for what he brings to CFC.

Enjoy the thread guys and don't hold back. This is a forum for open views, no matter how much I may disagree!

I agree he took with all of that. Especially the bit about you having family connections and you having bias. :p

Most frustrating player on our list imo. Beautiful player to watch when he's really on but he always leaves me feeling a little disappointed. Should be in our top 3 players but just seems like he will never get there :(

+1 for playing him as a forward. Could kick 30+ goals if he played a majority of the a year there.

Sidey is a footballer's footballer. He gives all he's got and his talent sometimes gets overlooked in favour of his running ability. He finds the ball and is generally creative in distributing it (that bullet pass he hit Darcy Moore with bursting out of the centre square was reminiscent of Barry Price...too bad Darcy couldn't hold it)
He's a gun and I hope to watch him kicking goals and mopping up our teams mistakes for many years to come.

I got howled down for giving him 4 votes in the didaka, so cheers for the background of the criticism. Unfortunately with Blair and Mayne out of the side and Greenwood fixing up Selwood, Sidebottom seemingly became the next in the gun. I also copped heat for using the term haters recently, so it will be interesting to see the reaction to your description.

I also wonder how the below will be taken when the new book Champions of Collingwood listing our best 125 players is released this week. Of the current players referenced Pendlebury is a certainty and Sidebottom would have to be favourite for the second with Reid the only other chance.

There is one player from our first ever game way back in 1892, and two from our most recent [ANZAC day], so the list covers every year of our existence.

Absolutely. Complete honest about my bias.
Also know just how much his current family situation may be weighing on him. But I'm not that close to him. Will never pretend to be and will never try to be. I'm not that type of supporter.

Ah well, you know that no matter your personal opinions, there will always be people who will take the 180 degree position.
I admit that Sidey has some absolute clangers. Even cost us goals.
Those who want to highlight those completely disregard the fact that usually Sidey is the only Collingwood player who has put himself in the position to receive the leather in the first place.
We don't have many two way players prepared to play defence, midfield and forward. Takes a lot of gut run and Sidey is elite in that metric.
What really shits me is the posters who slam Sidey for the dinky kick, which I admit is awful and I would love to be coached out of his game, that costs us a goal, yet dismiss Cox and his lack of awareness 2 metres out.
Book of Champions?
You seem correct. Can't name current AD players apart from Pendles and Sidey who could make the list.
Makes me sad actually.

Steele Sidebottom:

Best name in the team; best name we've ever had, think about it Steele and Sidebottom. Genius!

Elite runner. Runs runs and runs. Absolute elite. Career wise he never stops.

Big game performer. Finals, grand finals, just fantastic.

Ten goals in his TAC Cup grand final too. Was our steel in that draft (pun intended).

Gets a bum steer at times by our sides supporters (puns intended)

Great possession winner (B + at worst, big games seems to go A grade level)

Kicks goals! For all his ocassional odd bod kicks gee he kicks good goals.

He just should play out his career with us. Genuine top level talent and absolute elite runner.

(In case any one is wondering one of the best runners I've seem for non stop running; Robert Harvey was the benchmark, wow, but Steele is not that far off.)
