I agree that he owes Collingwood nothing and good luck to him for making the decision he's made. I'd make the same decision. But I don't think the Pies owe him full time pay. It's a big chunk of a year he's missing for paternity leave, should be leave without pay.
Leave without pay would not go down well with the players, or for that matter most supporters.

lets stop it here... or you can post your reply as i wont be continuing.

the players started off this by not wanting to leave home but still wanting to be paid, even though blind freddie could see that with no one could go to the footy, ( and in early stages, no games at all) and the clubs couldnt afford to pay them their money.

Fortunately, sanity prevailed but the point of my original post was to note that a lot of people in the past and a lot of people now dont get to swan around on parental leave for long periods and get paid for it. The "absolute necessity" of a father being there for the first few months wasn't something that happened in the past.

The other aspect is that there are 70,000 or so members who paid their memberships and havent taken their money back. If you want to talk about fairness or unselfishness then consider them. A number of these members probably had babies through this period and many of them might be struggling with isolation.

It's wonderful to see the whole world revolve around steele's interests but he is in a bubble - just a different type of bubble than his team mates in queensland.
There are a lot of well off people around the world who are probably on a better wicket than Steele. He's rich enough but he's small fry on the filthy rich ladder. So I have no desire to kick him, but the thing that sparked this thing off for me is the sense of entitlement that seems to surround those involved with this baby, and it's just a little much for me. My father would have been lucky to get the day off from the railways when his kids were born, and I think that I might have got a week. Things have improved a lot for some including steele, but we seem to forget those who still have to deal with living in the dark ages.

I've heard endless comments from channel 7 and fox people saying that steele has every right to do what's best for himself and his family, and not incur any financial loss. Unfortunately, only a percentage of people get similar choices.

Hey Mark, I think we are in the minority here mate. We must be both dinosaurs!
I think our old school values have been overwhelmed by the age of entitlement supporters.
I had heard that Steele wasn't doing well in the hub and was not returning many weeks ago. I think the logistics stuff is just BS.

And as for the Beams situation, I am better off not even starting! Not a fan of his at all.

i agree that times change and paid leave becomes an "entitlement". However, it doesn't mean that the money for it comes out of thin air.... as if it magically appears. It's like saying that membership dues magically appear at the end of each year.

A condition of employment, an entitlement, a right .... they are all different things. I just feel that there is a lack of perspective when people talk about steele's right to do the best for his family.

Personally I don't have an issue with him staying home. I'd rather him play but the pandemic is the real issue here. Any other year and he would be playing, so in that sense it's probably not worth much consideration in terms of rights.

with respect, dont dump me in with the dinosaurs. i'm not against parental leave, or mental health leave. I am just highlighting the entitlement aspect and how many australians arent entitled to these things.

Not sure why supporters would be particularly concerned about players not receiving full pay when taking a quarter to a third of the season off for paternity leave.

I don't think it would be a popular move.

back in my day, you were lucky to get the day off work if your wife was having a kid. As for helping out, all you have to do is feed em and clean the other end... it's not rocket science.
Lucky you. Try having a kid that screams all night with something like reflux or food allergies and see if its a piece of piss like you're implying

He's taking triple the length of paternity leave than is standard in the community. Good luck to him, but not sure why he'd expect full pay for all of it.

And like I said before, this isn't just about the father needing to be there. It's about the global pandemic and lockdown, limiting the amount of support a family can have after giving birth to their first born child. This isn't about changing of the times and what could and couldn't happen in the past; it's about the pandemic and lockdown. I bet if covid happened during whatever time period you're referring to, the same thing would happen if there was a player that had the same circumstances as Steele (or at least similar enough that they would still get paid and not be forced to travel interstate multiple times and quarantine).

And again, I don't see how money is apart of the problem when it would've been more much expensive to have him return. I honestly don't think the club would legally be able to not pay him even if both Steele and the club agreed to it, due to player managers and the AFLPA, and the fact unused money in the salary cap can be saved for future seasons. We can argue all day if he deserves to be paid for not returning to work or not, but it's hardly worth it to go through all this legal stuff and with contracts and salary cap with the AFL, the AFLPA and player managers etc.

Also, how do you know Steele will just be sitting on his ass? He will have access to club facilities to continue to train to get ready for next year. He can still do media commitments and provide support and participate in team meetings via zoom or whatever. He can still go through his vision and work on what he can (or remotely help other players go through their vision). He is in the leadership group, so I'm sure he will still be involved.

I said that i wouldnt say anymore on this but....

Obviously history is no longer a requirement at school. Maybe they're too busy giving the boys pre-natal classes.

I'm talking about the past. I'm talking about the present. I'm talking about men losing their jobs or not getting promoted because they want to take parental leave and the boss presuming that they havent got enough dedication.

Excuse me but are you living in the professional carlton-south yarra bubble? There are thousands of casuals who have lost their jobs and moved back home because they are not ENTITLED to the jobthingy allowance, because they're casuals...

i need to paint my kitchen window...

i'm sure mrs. steele is grateful she can call daniel wells' house and ask steele to come home and help out because the kid is screaming...

Still scratching my head that they didn't just have the baby in QLD. But nothing we can do about it.

I'm still wondering why they planned to have the baby in September? I mean how stupid can you be.

A vice captain on over 600k a year and the ONLY month we need him is September... Can't you have a baby in October? November? December? Jan Feb March April May? no? how about June or July?

Babies aren't ordered online.

I can't understand why they're allowed to have sex late December/January. Seems negligent to me.

Gee you would be popular with the players!

Yep, but fortunately grown adults with brains can plan babies... and most people with brains know babies take around 9 months... It's REALLY not hard to have a baby in October November December Jan Feb March April May June July August...
You have no idea how long Steele and his partner were trying. Some people try for years without ever being blessed with a child.

Cool.. if they've been trying for a long time then they can take a break for 1 month so the baby isn't born during finals then keep trying.

Really not that hard, is it?

It's actually very common for women in positions of women to plan their pregnancies around their careers, but apparently not having a baby in one month is too hard for a footballer... give me a break.

True that, and if they’re anything like mine, they don’t get much past 32 weeks cooked.
