As a free agent the pick recieved would depend entirely on where we finish for the year. Its a bit simple to just assume we'll get a top 10 pick if he leaves, and frankly, he's worth more than that anyway in the new era of interchange rotations where endurance runners will be worth their weight in gold.

We traded our 2016 first round for Treloar and Sidebottom is a FA so we'd only get a compensation pick

Not if we chose to match an offer.

Not if we chose to match an offer.
Unlikely. Dangerfield was a unique situation whereby Adelaide knew he was gone regardless of a matched offer or not, meaning they didn't run the risk of paying over the odds by matching, and gained better compensation in the process.

If we matched an offer for Steele the odds are that he would just stay given that it's pretty common knowledge he loves the club and has already expressed a desire to stay put. So in reality, if he held out for FA offers, we'd be in a situation whereby we pay overs to keep him, or let him walk and cop the FA compo. There's almost zero chance of us matching to force a trade.

Of course, this is all moot since he will be signing the dotted line shortly, and then we can all concentrate on worrying whether Broomy will be going back to SA ;)

What do people think is a good contract for Steele. 550x4?
Would be wrapt if he signed at that figure.
Pretty sure the manager would have had the feelers out and came back to player and club with a realistic market figure. Hoping he has agreed to terms under that market figure.
I would expect that market figure to be 700k +/- 50k.
So 650 or less pa would be fair compo and something the club could live with.

Probably most of that will captured in a performance based clause. Everyone expects him to go the next level and there should be an incentive for that.

It's great if he re-signs, but honestly, I don't feel he's integral enough to our side to worry if the deal doesn't get done.

Ed come on mate.

Not integral enough? Sidey is a very very good good footballer. I think losing him would be a setback in our Premiership aspirations if we can't get the deal done. Yeah we will get compensated but draft picks won't help us next year and probably the year after when our Premiership window is open.

We lose Steele and that's a massive chunk taken from our side. So consistent and borderline elite. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes the AA team this season if his body stays fit and healthy.

My prediction is a six year contract (taking him to 31 yo)

That's the best chance we have of affording him.

Really? That's ambitious.

Doubt it's more than 3 for a midfielder. Reid got 4 and Cloke 5, but both are key position. Mids are a dime a dozen so I'd be shocked if we offered a mid who isn't even our best 6 years. Pendles didn't even get 6.

I would think 600-650 would be a fair amount for Steele. Could command more on the open market, but successful clubs sign people for under value. That's what we need Steele to do.

Steele strikes me as someone who values success maybe a bit more than money (could be wrong, I don't know the bloke on a personal level) so he may be willing to sign for less

He'd net us a top 10 pick comfortably in what is being dubbed a bit of a superdraft. If we miss finals again, we'd have 2 picks in a great draft while also freeing up MORE cap space to go after another free agent.

Steele is a good player in an area we have plenty of depth in. Strategically, I don't think loosing him would be the worst thing on earth. But as I said, if he signs, great, if not, there's definitely a shiny silver lining.
Where does it end though? You can trade good players for draft picks and cap space ad nauseum.
At some point these first round picks need to turn into great, experienced players for our club, who actually play and win games.

Steele was a high draft pick in a pretty good draft too, so at best we'd basically just be going back to square one, where we started in 2008.

Steele is a star and an absolute must re-sign.

There may well be good times to let players go and take the compensation, but I can't see how this could be one of them.
Elite endurance runner in a time of restricted interchange; top ten player on the list; right age group for the list; popular club man with identified leadership traits that have many thinking he might be the next skipper, moved to another level of performance before his thumb injury...

I agree 100% mate.

I got bagged when I said sidey would be our next skipper. Hey may not be but his leadership qualities are there and his football output continues to rise. I'd say hes in our top 6 players.

Given the changes to the site in the last 12 to 18 months, I'm stoked to hear he's keen to stay.

Great clubman, hugely likeable, superb gut-running mid. Bucks is s HUGE fan of Rusty, especially the still-to-be-tapped potential that's there, even at his age. Sign up, Rusty!

The negotiations have started. We have offered a figure, his management has a figure, they need to meet in the middle. Steele's already stated he wants it sorted before round 1 so he can concentrate on his footy. On that basis it will hopefully get gone soon.

Agree. Shows that he is Playing for Bucks not like his Draftee Mate we took in the 2nd Round of the Same Draft

Vicky Park How do you know exactly there it Stands?

I don't know exactly TD, but Steele indicated in a vid on the Pies website that negotiations had started. The rest of what I posted is an assumption about how these things work. What Steele wants in his contract versus what the club is willing or able to pay/offer. It's why these things sometimes drag on for a long time, if the two parties are far apart in their expectations.

Saying that, we don't know if they are far apart. Could in fact be in alignment.

And often the player managers get involved, even if it's to create illusion they are working hard for the player

In 10 years he will have played most games ever for the club, yes i think he will play 35+ years old

A lot will depend on the development of the team. If we are challenging for flags I can definitely see him playing well into his 30s.

Sidebottom is proven to be consistent and quite durable ...

... He's a leader, he generally seems to behave himself ...

... He's been rated near the pointy end of the Copeland forever ...

... Can't see him fall out of the best 22 anytime soon ...

... As a premiership player he brings valuable experience, plus FWIW a bit of a sentimental attachment ...

... Offering players very long contracts seems to be the modern way of affording them when the salary cap is tight (see Buddy Franklin). A six year contract would take Steele up until age 31 - not unreasonable? Same age as we've signed Pendles until.

Ps. We did give Treloar a six year deal, so those kind of deals are definitely on the table.
