I know this is a bumped thread but is anyone else embarrassed by the thread title?
Yes it should read “Sidish Selfbottom”.

I’ll bite. Rusty is a bit of a plodder, but he has his moments, and knows where to be to get the footy. That said, it’s what he does with the footy is the problem. His disposal efficiency and that effort where he got cornered holding the ball when he tried to dodge and weave the man on the mark on Sunday, are not the best. He knows how to get a goal occasionally, and maybe it’s his age and position, but he used to score more often. He doesn’t have much range in his kicking anymore, but will always be good on both sides, fortunately. I’m less than a plodder myself, so he is a professional footballer who the club realise, at least internally, could perform much better in all circumstances than the average fan could, especially yours truly. I’m really hoping the bloke has the twilight of his career that makes our jaws drop, and he continues to rack up cheeky and useful goals. Don’t over do it, and we might see a couple of premierships to let him and Scotty ride off into the sunset with.

You're a forgiving man. Most of us had his down for retirement last year....

Yeah look he’s been a spud at times don’t get me wrong. My daughter is 12 months old, and even she could agree with me pleading with players not to kick it to Rusty on the weekend. But the bloke has a crack, and maybe we win a flag and pi$$ him off to a role as runner. He’s too short for Taylor Adams to kick to in the back half, when a GF is in the balance….. :drunk:

If you can't recognise how well Sidebottom has played recently in games against Hawthorn, Carlton, GWS and the Gold Coast then that says a whole lot more about you than Sidey's performance.

I thought he was cooked earlier in the season, but he is making me eat my words

Well he is getting more kicks than I am! ;)

I don't think enough has been said about his soccer goal yesterday from the ruck contest, the stop and prop, the sweet instep half volley strike, what a goal.

Loving Sidey this year, his ability to impact a game relative to his possession count is unbelievable.

Started the year as favourite for the Blair Memorial Trophy. Now on his way to another top 5 Copeland finish.

Amazing turnaround.

Are you sure about that? I’d have him behind Daicos x2, Crisp, De Goey, Pendlebury, Maynard, Elliott, Lipinski & maybe Moore & Noble.

He’d be lucky to crack top 10 in my view. Which doesn’t diminish his contribution

You’re probably right. Top ten for sure.

I hope to NOT see Sidey as a centre square mid at any point in today’s game. He has been completely ineffectual in his stints in that role this year, winning virtually no clearances and too slow to either break-away himself or catch and opponent breaking away. Elliott, The Daicoi and Pendles are all better options to rotate through.

I would, however, love to see Sidey sneak forward and kick a couple of goals, when he needs a rest from wing duties. I reckon he is our best front-and-square opportunist goal sneak. He gets to the right spots, is dual-sided and reads the ball off the marking pack better than anyone else in our side. In 2023 id like to see him play that role permanently.

Agree with you on this. Could work to have Sidebottom and Bobby Hill rotating between one wing and goal sneak while Josh holds down the other wing. I also see that as the best spot for Hoskin-Elliott (wing, not goal sneak) as he can take a good mark and deliver the ball well.
