Wouldn't we need to throw sufficient carrot to match a FA offer elsewhere? Our salary cap is surely tighter than a drum at the moment - I'm guessing it'd be difficult for us to get anywhere near another offer without offering a long term contract.

Six year contracts should be the exception, not the rule.

Agree. Sidey is a leader and an exceptional player. Today he's the only player at Collingwood who could justify such an offer. Moore might qualify at the end of his current contract (finishes 2018)

Those 3 years make a significant difference. It's the difference between a contract lasting in to a players prime and one that might be a year or two too long.

Clubs should NEVER match FA offers unless its like the Adelaide Dangerfield case where they wanted to enter into a trade to get better compensation. If a player wants out let him go. Good news is that Sidebottom seems to have flagged that he wants to stay so will mnot be fielding offers to get maximum pay and tenor eslewhere.

In hindsight, would you have signed Pendlebury on a 6 year deal at age 25? Or Swan?

Wouldn't have needed to back then because contracts didn't run that long. In 2011 Cloke's five year deal seemed crazy long. Those deals seem more normal these days.

Pendlebury every day of the week. Hes the sort of exception to the rule that I refer to. A class above Sidebottom and less of a risk than Swan.

Ranked 16th in disposals per game (all AFL players more than 5 games)
Ranked 7th in effective disposals per game (all AFL players more than 5 games)
Ranked 8th in uncontested possessions per game (all AFL players more than 5 games)

So that was season 2015 for Steele.
If that was dissapointing then I'm hoping for much more dissapointment in 2016/7/8/9.

Fair enough, my opinion is that he was off the pace a bit last season with effectiveness. Tended to handball a lot more, and didnt hit the scoreboard as much. Tackles down too. Hes always been a ball magnet so reading those stats off in itself doesnt say much. Official Effectiveness as measured by th estats tends to be high because his passes are usually short and therefore more likely to hit the target.

And by your own admission he got better as the year wore on. But you didn't seem to give him any credit for having a 6 week lay off.
Most players take a while to regain touch. He posted a plus 30 possible game upon return.
His passes may be "short", but that only means he knows his limitations as far as long kicking goes, and he is smart enough to pick the correct option instead of blazing away for the inevitable turnover.

I hardly sledged him as youre implying. I just said it wasnt his best year. But as you agree he has limitations. No need for six year contracts for players with limitations. Winning possessions isnt everything and I expect we can see better from him next year.

He'll be a Collingwood man until he retires regardless.
