Sidey is an interesting one. Aside from the occasional freak goal, he doesn't really do flashy things or catch the eye. He's not particularly big, or fast, or high-leaping. But he's very very solid, does everything well.

Looks like his first month this year has been a really mature, steady "slow burn" step up on previous seasons. I think he's on his way to becoming an extremely good AFL player, if perhaps not a mega-star.

Am I wrong to be thinking something along the lines of Scott Burns? Never the best player, but consistently in the top half dozen and just doesn't play bad games?

I might be wrong. Please be gentle if I am. :o

The baggers are doing alright in the pivot Faz your KPP's until recently have been a bit thin on the ground though.

Sidebum is the first in line actually, if you look at Fas there is something there, though he has to settle down a bit with his attitude.

Succession is the plan I believe, we need to have someone coming along after first Dids, then Pendles and then Daisy start looking to the forward line a bit more as they age. Actually Dids is there already to be brutally frank.

Certainly not saying he's there at the moment - Jimmy's won the big 2 medals - but in 3-4 years this is where he needs to aim to be.

Pretty much word for word what you said. - I'd add that his game in the wet, while not near Bartel's level yet, certainly is above standard.
 
In a nutshell, in terms of young, low 20s midfielders at the club we CANNOT let go off, he'd probably be in the group of 2-3 outside of Pendlebury and Thomas. Beams, Sidebottom and Blair are the future midfield core with Pendles and Thomas IMO.

Yeah, I agree with this statement. I should add neither did Swan, Thomas, Cloke, Reid, Shaw, etc and I rate them all better than Sidey too. But you make a good point, he certainly did play a great GF series in 2010.

I am not sure goalkicking is a fair comparison, as Steele plays a lot more in the forwardline than O'Bree did.

I also should reiterate again that I am not comparing Steele to O'Bree, but just suggesting I think Steele will hover at or just above O'Bree's level of output. Probably somewhere in between Licuria and O'Bree.
 
Gun. It's hard not to compare him to in and under kids because of his lack of speed, but I'd definitely put him in the bartel basket without the overhead marking. You could also compare him to Luke power, but with a bit less of a penetrating kick.
 
Do really like Steele but I will be realistic for a moment

His disposal can be rubbish sometimes he is a good kick but is very overrated in his kicking he is nothing like Pendles

He does lack pace but is not as slow as everybody thinks alot like Swan in this area can actually burn people of at times Swan is quicker though

His set shot kicking isn't great does go through stages where he struggles to convert think round 1 in that 3rd quarter I actually think Beams is s better set shot

Bartel was a good comparison but needs to seriously work on his over head marking and his inside work I could see him being a Joel Corey type not your best mid but very important can never see him being in our top 3 players

Intresting Some people here Like me see him as a Potential Superstar but others seem him being an Okay Player. INTRESTING

My guess is that you are 100% spot on.

A likely very good player in for a long career who will probably never be universally considered as great.

Will always be a super finals player because of his poise.

Could play to his mid 30's and break our games record based upon his body type if he keeps loving the game.

Good post - very similar to what I have been saying. Except comparing his pace to Dane Swan (who is one of the quicker players in our club).
 
Some of you are getting way ahead of yourselves with Steele. To me he's a good to above average player who tends to step up in the bigger games. For instance I think he was fairly ordinary for the latter part of last years season before stepping it up in the finals particularly against hawthorn. For Steele to take that next step he needs to develop a consistent level of footy week in week out which as he matures I'm sure will come. I think this has even become more evident this year as so far he has been more involved in all of our games and with the loss of Ball I think he will be spending more time as a mid meaning he will have more opportunity to impact games.

I see Steele becoming a valuable player to us as he matures. I don't believe as some have mentioned that he will become a superstar with a brownlow and AA selections, I just don't think he has the physical attributes to allow him to be that good. I think he should model his game on Sam Mitchell and if he can be as half as good as Sam we will have a valuable player on our hands for years to come. Either way I hope Steele proves me wrong and becomes an out and out champion of the game but at this stage I just don't see that happening.

Well Steele has played 4 Good Games in the 1st 4 Rounds and that is showing that he is playing well in Home and Away Games
 
Geez this guy loves the big games, has been BOG so far today. Will win the ANZAC medal if he continues his first quarter form. THIS is why he'll be a superstar, and not just OK Dave!
 
Was good today, but behind Swan, Pendles, and Beams in the midfield. Disposal was a little scrappy at times.

He was better then Beams today. Used the Ball better and got more of it. Beams was good as Inside Mid and Played the Ball Role
 
Swan Pedders Sidebottom and Beams really sound formidable - but I just cannot get over that carlton game - everyone talks about how reliable they are along with Daisy and then they dish up that against carlton. I would have preferred a loss today rather than see that again.

So happy with his development.

Robert Harvey has encouraged him ALOT apparently. I don't think there will be any looking back for Steele now
