I am wondering if there is any current player in the AFL more deserving of team success than Stefan Martin?

The bloke has been a reliable warrior for 12 seasons . 11 of them in VERY s**t teams. 11 years straight he was in the bottom half of the ladder. Usually the bottom 2 or 3. He would have had played in several wooden spoon seasons (3).

Before 2019 his record was 37 wins from 158 games or 23% win rate.

0 finals games played.

That is pretty miserable.

My god he must be loving this season. Good on him.

Such as?

37/158 is hard to beat.

Only maybe some Suns player could be worse off over a long career.

David Swallow sits on 34/135. So he even is better off than Martin was.

Pav, Lenny Hayes, Nick Reiwoldt, Tony Modra, Robert Harvey, Kade Simpson, Eddie Betts, James McDonald, I could go on.

All of those players would surely have better win/loss ratios than Stefan Martin.

It would be an interesting exercise to see which players have the worst records (maybe with a 50 or 100 game minimum) and which ones played the longest without finals.

Time to summon Ron The Bear :)

I’m probably not responding to the OP correctly but being a journeyman on crap teams doesn’t make you deserving of anything.

He is a gun player who was unfortunately stuck in crap teams but stuck it out. He had offers from other clubs in the last 5 years and could have left.

Finally getting a few wins and may finally get to play in a finals game.

They all played in several finals as well. Some in grand finals.

He is a much better player at the lions than he was at the dees.

I feel like this should be a perpetual trophy named after Robbie Flower

That bloke owns the rest of them. 14 years, 272 games no finals. His club literally ran newspaper ads prior to his final season asking for donations so they could add some players to help Robbie play in a final. It actually worked, they made the prelim, and lost on the siren after Jim Stynes ran over the mark, costing him a shot at a grand final in the cruellest possible way.

So yeah, the AFL should hand out the ‘Robbie Flower’ award at the start of each season to the bloke most deserving of some success...

Lowest winning percentages, 100+ games. Lewis Taylor is the highest-ranked current player at #24, followed by Alex Sexton (#30), David Swallow (equal #39), Sam Mayes (#50), Trent McKenzie (#54), Sam Day (#59), Pearce Hanley (#61) and Stefan Martin (#69). Of those, Martin has waited the longest for his debut final, at 4053 days.

Bob Skilton waited the longest for his finals debut (5229 days), just ahead of Robert Flower (5202). The most days between a player's last final and the end of his career is 5425 for Ron Clegg of South Melbourne, who played in the losing 'Bloodbath' GF in his 15th game before a drought that extended for the rest of his 231 games.

The longest unfulfilled wait was by Bill Mahoney (6692 days), who played 148 VFL matches for Geelong, St.Kilda and Richmond between 1902 and 1920. Mahoney crossed to Richmond while they were still in the VFA and was a b&f winner and the first Richmond player to play 100 VFL games. He made a comeback at 35 when Richmond was a contender but despite playing three late-season games, missed selection in the finals.

Cheers Ron. Interesting to note that Jack Grimes is the only player in the modern AFL era to appear on the table ahead of Lewis Taylor - and Taylor has a big chance to eventually slip out of the table. Gee that Melbourne side in the eras of Neeld and Bailey were terrible...
