thank you for giving us stephen gilham for nothing he is a gem, its hard to understand how he didn't get any chances with the power i know u were awesome in his time at the club but i thought you could of perserveaed, was it purely because he was to small or was it lack of hard work or any other reasons because the kid can play, thanks for your list manager & fittness guru aswell lol you may aswell call us port adelaide.

Letting go of Gilham was a mistake, and at the time a few of us were bemused at the craziness of letting a guy like that develop on our list, and he was progressing pretty well at SANFL, only to let him walk away.

It was a poor judgement call, although others will argue that we had guys like Bishop playing well at the time, and had Chaplin and Pettigrew who were rated more highly.

Gilham is a good decision maker and uses the ball well. I hope he does very well with you guys. If Hawthorn weren't performing better than us this year, I would actually be very pleased to see them do so well. Good luck.

cheers mate yea its bemusing because he just looks so at home in the afl & as you said has great skills & awareness for a full back & hopefully he can get a bit bigger & be one of the best FB going around, sorry we gave you lonie.

When we had Gilham, he was completely useless. Couldn't even do any good with North Adelaide.

Obviously he's alot more comfortable and confident at Hawthorn.

at least he went to a club that i like watching

Isn't there some sort of board rule about posting in English for christ's sake?

All I could garner from this thread is that some imbecile is happy we discarded a player who was showing nothing while at Port.

At least that's what I think this thread's about?

I'm glad the kid is doing well at Hawthorn.

Chaplin played in the SANFL on the weekend and Carlile was the traveling emergency as his SANFL team (South Adelaide) had the bye. If these two guys can't get into our best 22 then there wouldn't be much hope for Gilham.

If brookers#5 cares to PM me his postal address I'll send him a box of spare punctuation marks and capital letters I have lying around. I might even chuck in a dictionary and a book on grammar

Now that is nonsense. He was every bit as good for North as Chaplin was for Sturt or Pettigrew for West or Carlile for South.

Exactly, Gilham played 48 quality games for North and was awarded best defender and most consistent at the best and fairest night in his final year. Unfortunately people only remember his 49th game in which Fergus Watts played the best game he will ever play and kicked 10 in a final (not all on Gilham however).

I agree ...... its dissapointing to see our supporters bagging guys as soon as they leave and deriding them without basis.

Gilham was knocking on the door for a long time - at the time though we were pretty set down back with Cornes, Wakelin, Bishop etc ... unofrtunately we weren't in a position to blood him and the result was he went looking for opportunity - he probably in hindsight left a season too soon for us.

Didn't he endure some time being coached by Darel Hart early on where he wound up in some foreign positions (eg the wing), which wouldn't have helped his development.

I remember him being a good player for North and even in his one AFL appearance showed courage and a strong attack on the ball, even tho he was a bit scrawny.

I'm pleased that he's going well even if it is at another club. Good, solid player, but would have still been a raffle in the current pecking order.

Gilham looked ok in the SANFL but with the defenders we had at the time just couldnt crack into the team
sometimes it just works out that way
you win some and you lose some
as for defenders....remember port also let go of Tom Harley who played only 1 game for Port and now look at him. Captain of the top team

We have also got players who did well for us that gave (and still give) us plenty of value like Rodan, Montgomery, Bishop, Wakelin, Pickett

Splinter was his nickname while he was here, he just couldnt bulk up.
I think the changing of the rules has certainly helped him and similar players this year.
He was ok, disposal wasnt great, but not a huge loss in my opinion.

Thanks for the opinions & sorry for the grammar;)but i think if you saw him play this season you'd be dissapointed because you have given us a talented kid that you developed for nothing & you gave us a good draft pick for lonie in the same year we did pretty well that year.

Was turning into a good player and we got rid of him. THought it was a strange decision at the time considering the age of our defence. Showed more than Pettigrew did in defence at SANFL level.

Port clearly came out winners.

If Hawthorn last long enough at the top, they will lose good youngsters for bugger all too.
That's a good point. We've got T. Murphy who can't get a game at the moment, but is definately very nicely and looks a solid 2nd tall, much like Gilham was at Port.

Problem is he can't crack a game, and we have to delist 3 at the end of the year, so he could be gone and I'm sure another club could pick him up and he could be very successful.

Gilham has been such a bonus for us though, we were really struggling down back, and he has filled a vital hole and our defense has improved out of sight.

Ease back there, bookers. If the Geelong guys hear you're starting threads like these, we may be reminded about giving up Gary Ablett Snr, which effectively means Gary Ablett Jnr as a father son. Every club makes the odd mistake, we're more quilty than a lot as well.
