I just found the footage that really got me thinking. Last quarter 10 min 26 seconds. Have a look at the effort or lack thereof. I hope for his sake hes injured.

This thread wouldn't even exist if Gary Lyon hadn't been doing his normal thing in commentary of picking an individual or two criticise in a side getting beaten because it's easier than actual analysis of the process. Which is why he is a commentator and not a coach.

It is less than a month since Hill was one of the best on ground in our loss to the Giants ffs.

This. It applies to a whole heap of AFL media types who pontificate about selections, game day tactics and how to prepare a team but never have the balls to see if their theories would actually work.

You'd reckon none of them ever had a bad game.

Yep, not saying Hill didn't play badly. He did. But they're be no pile on (since he was hardly Johnny on his own) without a sheep like following of Lyon's 'analysis'.

I disagree. The first goal yesterday to Richmond, his opponent, Caddy, was on his own 25m out direct in front and Hill had his back turned to play slowly jogging/walking toward the goal, assuming the Richmond player was having a shot at goal.

I also don't like the idea of him playing in defence because he's a poor defender. Play him on the wing and just tell him his job is to link up the play from defence to the forwards.

A couple of years back you'd be mad to suggest that SHill be relied on to be a 1-on-1 defender. He has a good deal of assets, some of them elite level, but his ability to defend was not among them. Having said that, he's obviously improved massively in that department, but he's still not a natural defender - it shows every now and then.

Point is though that he isn't being asked to play HB for his defending ability as such. As long as its adequate, the current game style is all about having a number of skilled ball users and runners playing deep - that's why he has been working more out of the back 1/3. He's done OK overall. Some great games, some average and stinker yesterday.

But if he's injured, then forget it. A poster stated quite well above, he doesn't seem to play well with niggles and perhaps a long run of injuries and niggles has affected his base fitness too.

That's not true at all.
I started the thread.
This morning while looking for the footage/ moment that raised my concern I was listening to the commentry and was surprised that Gary Lyon was talking about him too. I don't really listen to commentry generally (hence I never get involved in such and such is a flog conversations).
If you can, have a look at the last quarter and watch Hill. He must be injured, which is fine in isolation. But the amount of times he's just standing around, half chasing, having the ball kicked over his head etc. is alarmimg to say the least from a player who should be much better.
Im not having a go at him by starting this thread. I just live in Hobart and don't really have anyone to talk Dockers with and wanted some other opinions on where people think he's at.
To me the fastest he can run is a fast jog. Thats a problem when 45 minutes later Ross in his presser highlights a lack of speed as one of our issues.
Even if I was following G Lyons lead, and it appears that he's right, isn't it still a worthy topic of discussion?

But we now have Willo, Ryan and Blakely (and to some extent, A Pearce) who are good/very good ball users from the back which should relegate the need for Hill to be playing off the half back.

His burst of pace was always one of his key assets and he hasn't had it for a few years. Can he regain it, or do we need to accept that he's going to play a different role from now on.

Hilly will be BOG, or second after Fyfe this week against a slow, MOR side

Steven Hill is an A grade wingman. I understand the need for flexibility, but I much prefer him to stay on a wing.

I know what opposition clubs think when they see him jog off into a back pocket - 'thank f*ck for that, we don't have to worry about Hill hurting us today'.

Worst case of being Barlowed since.. well.. Barlow.

Yep.
And I don't think he has that defensive DNA in him.
Richmond's first goal of the day by Caddy was an uncontested mark 40m straight in front. Wilson was pointing to him asking who was on him ... S.Hill who was within 10 metres with his back to the play just ignored him. It did not look good on the replay (which doesn't always paint a clear picture).

He’s just not that good. Been saying it for years. He’s a really nice guy and it shows, whereas his brother is cheeky and it shows. Brad is the much better player despite having about a tenth of the kick and skills he does.

Stephen Hill really hasn’t improved since about his 30th game. He’s what, 28 or so now and still patronised as one of the young guys.

Not to mention how frustrating he is in terms of his softness... can’t hack a tag, sticks his arse out when he tackles, always does that thing where he turns backwards and doesn’t back himself to get past a player...

But he’s a sacred cow so he’ll never get dropped. And tbh I don’t think he’s someone who would use a dropping as a way to perform better... he’s someone you need to mollycoddle.

Personality-wise, I don't think it makes sense to compare Stephen to Brad. I don't buy the idea that you need to be cheeky or have mongrel to be a good footballer. It can be an asset, but it's ultimately about decision-making. I could names 100 players who are cheeky and shit. People say Mundy is quiet, and yet he plays like a beast.
Comparing Brad and Stephen's games, they are quite different. Stephen's built up strength means he can stand up in a tackle now, and bring down someone, the other side of Brad's agility is that he has less strength than most teenage recruits.
Stephen can turn around the corner on the left when pressured and still execute a 50m kick, which Brad can't.
The fact that Stephen doesn't run as aggressively now has surely got nothing to do with personality and everything to do with his body.

Players like Stephen Hill have the ability to win games of their own back but with our current coach and game plan it takes that X Factor out of players like Hilly as they are instructed to play a role, let him play with his natural flair let him loose

Is there really a position called the wing these days? I thought it was "run around in a pack with everyone else"?

Seriously though is there much difference between HBF and wing? Both you are running and kicking the ball forward (mostly - or both switching play), both you need to be accountable for your man....

Stephen Hill actually looks closer to retirement than many others; injuries clearly have taken a toll, which is a shame because his good-normal really can lift a team.

I'm often shocked by Bigfooty, however even with Danyle and MJ at Peel - I still fell Stephen Hill's nomination as Escaped Goat is a tad early.

Shill is a very talented and hard working burst player. Out of form or fighting through injury - most players encounter this and fight through it.

Also some serious revisionist history going on if S Hill is being remembered as average over the last few years.
