There is 1 year between Kernahan and Brereton in terms of age with sticks being a year older, so lets compare them between 1986 when Kernahan started in the VFL and when Dermie finished at Hawthorn in 1992. Bearing in mind Sticks kicked 292 goals in 83 games after that compared to Dermie's 37 in 22 games.

Not a huge amount between them but Kernahan has Dermie covered it is the goals that makes the big difference, as well as longevity and leadership.

At the same ages Carey has sticks covered, however things are much closer over there career averages as Kernahan was at his best for a longer period of time than Carey, i find this surprising as the game become more handball centric in the late 90's.

Have we really just spent eight pages arguing that Dermot Brereton (211 games, 464 goals) was better than Stephen Kernahan (387 games, 1028 goals).

I mean, I know you guys hate Carlton but come on. Kernahan is comfortably in the top ten AFL forwards of all time.
Apparently because Dermott Brereton was a good Finals player he was better than Kernahan. Even though it's been pointed out and it's pretty obvious that Kernahan was a big Finals performer as well.

I think Hawthorn supporters need to get over the fact that just because they were a powerhouse in the eighties, there were other players who were exceptionally great. Kernahan was one of those.

251 games, 738 goals. I am sorry Hawks fans, Kernahan has Dermott covered.

Pretty sure if I wanted a discussion about Dermott Brereton I'd have started a thread on him. I couldn't give a toss about Dermott Brereton being injured or having a limited career. The fact is Kernahan wasn't, he played 90% of his career as captain and kicked 700+. Sure Brereton had big moments in finals but so did Kernahan, and this is about Kernahan being in a similar league as Carey. Which I think he is.
Perhaps Sticks compared to Richo is more relevant?
