Stephen Wells

Was listening to Balme on SEN yesterday. He was trying to emphasize that as good as Wells and his team are , that its just as much or if not more the system they come into.

Ever cook a Pavlova. Pick the best Eggs, No cage, free range what ever but its the separation, the beating, the mixing , the cooking , the adding of toppings.....Its why I think just bottoming out is a false dawn. Just getting the good kids will not get you the team , its the system you put them into.

Having said that , they mentioned that he was out looking at GWS or GC reserves the other day. The effort he has put in and the knowledge he has can not be denied

I know it's not just Wells, but I am staggered that GC/GWS didn't back up a truck full of money for him, Cook, and whoever leads our player development.

I know GC tried to get Cook, but that should have been one of their highest priorities IMO. Glad it didn't happen!

If memory serves correctly they did go very hard for Wellsy then when he knocked them back the GC went for Clayton

All very good points and like the footy team, success comes from the group not the individual...

That said.... still needs a statue next to Frank and Cookie out the front....

Go Catters...

It comes from the "right individual", Wells is very good at picking players who also fit the group.

The best player doesn't always make the best team member

Master Geelong recruiter Stephen Wells can't dodge the plaudits

STEPHEN Wells loves, in no particular order, his family, the Geelong Football Club, quick, clever footballers, golf (handicap of seven) and the city of Geelong.

Is there no end to Jon Ralph's incompetence? He said Enright had won 5 All-Australian "nominations". Actually JR, when you get picked in the final team, it's a selection.

Doesn't really need to be a question hey Partridge ;)

Wells has been well above par with his selections. And he is the face of an outstanding group. Wells did lose his right hand man of 14 years to Carlton and Malthouse at the start of this year so it will be interesting to see if or how the selection dynamic of the scouting and recruiting group goes.

Given it was 8 months ago I'm sure it has been covered well.

Just another example of Geelong skill and expertise being spread thoughout the league...

Generally love your work Partridge, but geez you rank right up there for negativity.

The piece was a PR triumph for the club as a whole. It showed SW to not only be an ‘A’ grade player analyst but genuinely a top grade bloke respected by friend and foe alike. It alleviated any fears I might have had that he may be tempted by offers from other clubs. It also said something about Bomber who couldn’t resist pumping himself up in a piece not about him.

Yet all you could see was an error which you seized on in order to give someone you have no time for a kicking. Okay, Ralph showed some poor research but the piece seen in totality was a real plus for the club and one of its most esteemed people.

And this is a surprise to you because....?

Ralphy must've been on the turps when writing the article. He got the brother wrong.

.....because I live in hope and hoped your move to a more salubrious suburb might be accompanied by even an incremental shift to optimism (scrub that!) balance (scrub that!);moderation (scrub that!) positivity (scrub that!) ...... No! You’re right. I have no reason to be surprised. Unless, of course you haven't moved yet.:)

I guess I got on the high horse because this was an overwhelmingly positive well deserved piece for an esteemed individual and for the club generally. Money can’t buy that sort of stuff. Although a few lunches might have been involved. I reckon Kevin Diggerson and his crew would have been in orgasmic delight over it. Maybe not the right piece for nitpicking.

Reading the article, the only person who doesn't think Stephen Wells deserves a statue is Wells himself. Don't think there's any argument from anyone else. I've been in favour of chaining him to one of the light towers, then he can't escape. :)

Which is one of the positives from the piece i.e he will be with us until he needs a walking frame.

You can understand why... "Personal reasons" sounds like he wasn't getting on with Malthouse :D

I loiked these comments about Stephen Wells in the Guardian
Stephen Wells is a genius. It’s beyond any doubt that he will use Geelong’s No 41 pick to secure a future All-Australian. It’ll be some kid who played seven TAC Cup games in two years, but within six months you’ll be throwing things at the TV as the player in question puts on 8kg of muscle and slots straight in as a rebounding half-back who averages 20 disposals. You know it’s true. If your club hasn’t tried to poach Wells they’re kidding themselves.
