After unceremoniously gutting the Richmond gameplan and ruining their dynasty at the peak of their powers, the prodigal son returns home.
it's such a boss move, even I have to respect it, he cripples the high pressure/low-possesion sides like the Tigers, and puts the league into the hands of the kick-mark keepings-off teams...

Then just backs into the hedge...

As absolutely infuriated as I have been, at least you can say that Richmond had them so worried they actually changed the rules. That didn't happen to kill off any of the other modern dynasties.

Hocking didn't start until 2018. Two days after the 2017 GF Salty was moaning that Richmond's style was "a problem" for the AFL (despite 16 goals in the GF). Richmond hits the top of the ladder in late April 2018 and all of a sudden the media led by Mince Whateley has made "state of the game" the dominant talking point, with Robbo nodding assuredly to the suggestion that the game desperately needed rule changes.

Three years later and 2019-20-21 are the three lowest-scoring seasons since 1967.

Forgive my distrust of everything to do with Geelong and the AFL.
Whateley and co. talked the game down relentlessly, was really poor, so little insight from people who apparently watch the game so much.

Worse still though were the admin that made fundamental changes to the game based on covid/hub year.

No wonder they stuffed up so bad with the new rules and teams are in 'outperform' territory if they mange to kick 3 goals in a 30 min quarter.

Was so predictable what would happen with the 'stand' rule, where in the past players would play on instantly after a mark they now stop, make sure to fix a defender to the spot, then look to go. All the spontaneity and speed is lost and low scores result.

Eh they take their cues from AFL House, Whateley never had an original insight in his life. It was all over SEN as well. Hocking was making himself useful. Reckon he tried far too hard to create work for himself.

me too.

and I thought it would be hard for anything to make me fall out of love with the game.
So it’ll be Pete & Ron sitting together at the end of the bar pissing and moaning till the end “Hockings fault this beer is warm” “and flat”. Someone yells out “they’ve hit the front” and back will come in unison “Hockings fault” not realising it’s the federal election

Right now after all this hilarious bullshit from Tigers fans I’m imagining a family guy style in-heaven discussion about why the great football dynasties ended (Brian meets Hemingway, Van Gogh and Kurt cobain who all explain how they couldn’t cope with their own level of genius and killed themselves - Brian says he got there by getting into the garbage and eating some chocolate)

‘We were destroyed by a dozen all Australians getting old and retiring and losing the best player of the millennium to the Suns.’

‘We had to overcome Lance Franklin going to Sydney, Mitchell and hodge retired and our forward leader got cancer and missed a heap of football.’

‘Port finally got us and Lynch and others got too old and we fell behind one of the great midfields of all time from Perth and just couldn’t maintain the intensity anymore.’

‘Yeah….. ah…… guys had to stand still on the mark, that’s how we finished.’

Successive rule changes detrimental to a team's style of play might be considered similar to a handicapper putting more weight on a horse. Bernborough kept winning until they gave him 68kg in the Caulfield Cup, then he broke down and the big crowds fell away. Que sera, sera.

I don't get it, months ago when the Herald-Sun allegations came out, Geelong fans were all 'see, Richmond cheat on the mark, that's why Hocking had to make the rule change'

Now it's 'haha Richmond are delusional, rule changes didn't target them'

So which narrative are we running with?

Was Hocking's stand rule proof that Richmond are cheats?

Or are the Tigers fans just paranoid?

Or we go for a new convenient narratve?

I don’t believe in conspiracy theories and I don’t believe that such a juggernaut of a football team should be so easily shut down that the man on the mark standing still could end an era
