Re: You know who I mean.

Subiaco is actually long and narrow. Only 122 m wide but 175 m long.
MCG is 141 by 160
Subi must be like Skilled Stadium then??

Is SJ believing his own press?

SJ played the best footy of his career after he was humbled in 2007.
There is no question that he is an incredibly gifted player with a great footy imagination, but I sense that he just thinks he can get a kick because he thinks he's better/smarter than his opponents.
Telling contest in the last quarter when he was simply out-bodied in a one on one marking contest. He should at least break-even in that scenario and force the ball to ground.
Trying to con the umpires too much.
If he's not fully fit, rest him until he is, or tell him to get back to basics and attack the footy hard.
Come on Johnno...you're better than this!!

Re: Is SJ believing his own press?

Yes, and the third quarter effort where he basically dared the guy to tackle him as he ran into goal (and almost got tackled) instead of handballing to Pods who was unattended 15m out straight in front, didn't please me.

SJ does some wonderful things, and at times he did so yesterday, but he also makes me tear my hair out, particularly when he lairises or tries to play for frees.

The con is the one that annoys me. He has always done it to a degree but so far this year he has thown himself to ground to easily and when the free isn't paid then it is a simple turn over to the opposition as he has taken himself out of the play.

I agree. Not saying he's close to being dropped or anything but with Pods and Mitch Duncan playing well and Rooke, Varcs etc to come back he'd want to start looking a bit more like he's playing the team game. I think the coaches are pretty forgiving of poor performances as long as the player looks like they are trying hard to do the job they're given.

Re: Is SJ believing his own press?

Seems a bit down on confidence at the moment. Just not quite nailing it. We all love Stevie J but when he had no-one to kick to in the last quarter kicking out after the stretcher, he kicked to a contest where Sandilands was contesting. Seriously Stevie, anywhere but Sandilands, he's only the biggest person in the country.

Yeah i found that kick strange aswell. I mean we are very good at getting the loose man, and we must have been able to hold the ball a bit more and then get someone on there own.

Re: Is SJ believing his own press?

I think he still has the goods, and deserves a little bit of credit in the bank. However, some are hitting on him for some of his decisions on the weekend, hate to spoil the thread but there was terrible decision making all round.

Most of the backs had a shocker, Enright and Mackie turned it over way too much. Our normal skills coming out of defence was a little off kilter. So it wasn't just SJ who made bad decisions.

Yeah agreed...SJ is an enigmatic player and to some degree you take the bad with the good, but he just looks lazy to me this year. Maybe I/we are being too harsh but maybe just a focus on the basics would help him get his mojo back?

Re: You know who I mean.

That's because he thinks he's Daicos.

Well then maybe you need to give him a call and tell him that you understand you are not Daicos, and he should do the same ;)

Re: You know who I mean.

I think he is as good.

Johnson isn't playing that badly in my opinion, but I admit he is too often either being a little soft under contact or is playing for frees.

I have heard and read Gary Ablett Senior a number of times state the most important thing he learnt was competing your feet, this keeps you in the contest and when you are in the contest you can still win the ball. This is one of Gary Junior's greatest assets, he keeps his feet in every contest and that makes him that much more damaging.

Johnson was similar until recently, in my mind I can replay many goals where he kept his feet in a contested ball situation which led to a goal.

He isn't playing badly. Just has to do a few of the simple things more often and he will be back to his best.

It's not that he's batting poorly, it's just that he keeps getting out :D

Stevie J will come good.... Showed some promising signs within the Dockers game. Probably needed a bit more time in the thick of things, but he had a couple of good shots from the pocket, narrowly missing one from a difficult angle, whilst dobbing a few others.

I think to get back to his best form he probably needs to play up the game to get his hands on the pill a bit more - seems to be a confidence player. we might have to take a few Stevie J lookaway errors to get him there though!

The enigmatic "touch" players never seem to be as consistent as the other players do they?

I reckon he isn't being lazy. You can see the frustration on his face that it isn't working for him ATM and maybe at times he is mentally trying too hard.

I agree...hopefully a few fines for staging and/or a roast from the coaches and/or watching GAJ's game tape will help him with this.

He's a brilliant player, but there's small things like that which he could do better at.
