People keep talking up the chances of Steve Smith for the test side, a guy who boasts the wonderous bowling average of 49 in first class cricket.

I can't fathom how the man they call Sock gets absolutely no cred despite averaging 52 with the bat and 25 with the ball.

I'm sure Smith will be a great player for us in years to come, but with Hauritz performing very well, guys like O'Keefe and Krejza surely have a case to be regarded 2 & 3 - just for now anyway.

Smith has him easily covered in regards to batting, yes Smith has played twice as many games but i cudn't imahine O'Keefe hitting 4 centuries in his next 6 games (that wud put him on par with Smith).

On face value seems to be a more reliable bowler than Smith, but smith has a lot more potential particularly as a leg spinner as the selectors will want a wrist spinner as opposed to a finger spinner.

RE: Steve Smith

It really annoys me that people regard Smith as this saviour of a spin bowler..

He is a batsmen first then a bowler, it is only because the King Shane Warne said he has good control and said to people take note of this guy that everyone else has stood up and said, hey he is right.

I agree with the OP that there are better options out there as the forementioned Steve O'Keefe, Jason Krezja or even Xavier Doherety.

I just do not get it sometimes, I really dont.

O'Keefe is certainly performing well as a bowling allrounder. His recent performances for Aus A will have caught the selectors' attention. The reason people are more excited about Smith is that while he's inconsistent as a bowler, he has shown flashes of great ability, and he's also a great batsman in his own right. He has the potential to be an evenly balanced allrounder that could be picked on either discipline alone. O'Keefe doesn't. If O'Keefe ever plays Test cricket, he won't bat higher than 8. Smith is a top 6 batsman and potentially a front line spinner.

Test only I thought? Either way he won't get a game unless Smith, North and Clarke all break down.

And what's with all the other spinners being injured?

They are trying to get the limelight from the injured quicks. Our bowling stocks are becoming a real joke now.

Bolly is due to break a leg or something equally depressing. It's not like they are just getting pulled muscles, they are having to be off for months. WTF is going on?

Look at Mitchell Marsh probably on to his second round of surgery and he isn't even 19 yet. At this rate, he's going to wind up a batsman only.

I'd be super pissed off if I were Xavier Doherty. X has arguably been the best limited overs spinner in the country over the past few years, and he can't even get a look in to the Australian squads at either ODI or T20 level, while blokes like O'Keefe are almost walking in from grade cricket and getting a cap, or batsmen-who-bowl like Steve Smith are getting a game. I know O'Keefe put in some impressive displays against Sri Lanka A, but Smith hasn't exactly set the world on fire with his bowling. I'd have X ahead of them in the limited overs spin queue.

X seems to be the next spinner in line after Smith and Ritz for OD's (If his selection in the Aus A team is anything to go by).

But this is a T20 match overseas and there's a test series coming up, you can see why the selectors didn't really see the point of bringing him over for a T20 match can't you? (As X isn't a test option)

But SOK shouldn't be playing in this match. I don't see why they rested Smith.

Smith was sitting in the dug-out playing with a bat and looking like a little lost boy. Nice to see some youth in our teams.

Yea I suppose that's all fair. I'd just really like to see X get a go in either ODIs or T20Is, because IMO he deserves it just as much as any spinner in this country.
