It’s still amazing to think he was originally selected as a bowler. He must be unique in the history of the game to not only excel in a different discipline to that which he was selected for, but also become a top 3 player in that discipline.

Proper legspin takes too much time to be a side gig.

True, although Ian Chappell kept it up for much of his career and although he didn't take many wickets he wasn't that expensive. But as a general rule you'll find many many top order batsmen can trundle out a few offies to break things up, but legspin is like pregnancy. You either are a legspinner or you aren't. Part-timers just don't cut it.

Slightly different because by the time he played international cricket he was a batsman but Pietersen started domestically as an off spinner
 
Lance Klusener could always bat but was initially picked for SA mostly as a seamer, took 8 wickets in his second test innings, and thereafter was known as a left hand batsman who bowled a few cutters
