Interesting article in today's Sunday Mail (Qld) re: Turner. He wants the clubs to just reach a deal. NRL says that it still won't register the contract while the clubs are in dispute. Turner says that he hasn't been paid by anyone yet and is training alone. Also mentions that his girlfriend wasn't the reason he wants to stay in Melbourne but didn't say what is motivating him.

One interesting aspect of this issue has been the media debate. The News Ltd papers are right in the Storm/Turner camp - for obvious reasons. The Fairfax mob, lead by Weidler and Gould, are backing the NRL/Titans.

I'm been a storm supporter since their inception and I think this has been handled poorly as everyone else, but it's hardly one teams fault (i.e. Titans or Storm) over the other. It's really down to Turner's idiotic agent who should have been sacked by now.

As much as Gould is a tosser, I'd still back his opinion over some hack 'journalist' for the dailyturdegraph

The most hilarious thing about Gould's News Ltd./Turner rant was the fact that he tried to play himself off as some sort on neutral observer.

From a personal perspective Gould is a fascinating creature - when he believed that Wayne Bennett was headed to Bondi he decides to start arse-kissing Bennett on air - despite the fact he's hated the bloke for eons.

His opinions appear to be as flakey as his friendships...
 
This whole Steve Turner issue is great. It shows which qualitys are at the forefront of human thinking. Greed, lack of compassion, no respect....the list could go on forever.

The pure fact Turner won't fess up why he wants to st with the Storm is just another indicator to his greed. An extra $100G a year is definately worth trying to protect, but seriously, this boy has got a huge future so why waste 3 years of his life doing nothing but packing shelves at woolies for some cash he will make up when he washes up in the English Superleague.

But there are so many things to discuss about this issue.
- Turner verbally agreed to join the Titans. Now he is obviously a footballer, but even Tery Hill would know a verbal contract is just a binding as a document covered in signatures. dean Rioli knows this, thats why he is staying away from the issue. He knows his client has done wrong.
- The Storm are being increasingly arrogant and pig-headed about the issue. They are losing the respect of so many of the greats, media and players associated with the NRL, they might just end up being the loners from down mexico way.

The storm have to make up their mind. Lose everyones respect by condemming a young professional to the wilderness for 3 years, or swallow whats left of their pride and give up the $100G plus the two juniors and life will go on

I know you Storm-ites will be upset about this, but seriously, WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FREAKNG ROSES....the storm are just trying to bully around the Titans, the league and anyone else who opposes them...guess thats what you can do when half of Australia's media has a controlling share in the way your club runs....

YES, it is true. dean Rioli is nothing more than an idioc agent who was also thinking of his 6% of the extra 100G turner would be getting a year from the storm. i swear i was saying something about greed before....

Not the first time Dean Rioli has been accused of being greedy but normally food is involved.

Gowz, if you are going to discuss the issues, how about the one where the Titans made a verbal agreement with Turner and yet months later still hadn't got around to having Steve sign the contract.

I'm certainly not going to say that the Storm are blameless but lets not claim to discuss the issues and leave that out.

All of this would have been avoided if they had got him to sign the contract.

I'm sure the Titans have learnt a valuable lesson out of this too.

As for whether Riolo having a lot to answer for........I'm with you 100%

You have to wonder why Riolo was not pushing for a contract to be signed. For all intents and purposes, the agreement had been reached - Turner making public statements about how much he was looking forward to joining the Titans is an indication that the deal had been struck. Any agent worth his salt would be pushing for a contract to be signed (try telling a real estate agent "the deal has been done - we'll worry about the paperwork down the track"). At the time Turner agreed to join the Titans, Riolo should have been finalising the paperwork so that the Titans could not escape from the deal.

Part of the reason is - it is not particularly uncommon in the rugby league industry for the paperwork to follow weeks down the track. Press statements are made on the basis of, if not a handshake, then a very basic written enunciation of the deal. Eventually this was going to bite a club/player/manager on the bum - and it has.

I agree that the Titans and Riolo stuffed up by failing to finalise the paperwork. But this would happen dozens of times every season, given the overall disinterest in getting the contract signed immediately. I believe it took a player/club to either exploit the system or inadvertently highlight the commercial naivety to change the way business is done.

A couple of points. Either this has been poorly written (surely not :rolleyes: ) or the Titans are going a little too far - they cannot just "offer up" Turner to the Sharks as suggested. I suggest it has been poorly written and what actually transpired was that the Titans spoke to the Sharks about reaching an agreement that suits the Titans, Turner and Cronulla. "Offering up" a player that the Titans argue is on contract is not on. Offering to release Turner in exchange for some compensation would be OK.

The second point is Riolo's quote at the end of the article:

"But none of this takes away from the fact that from day one Steve Turner has wanted to remain in Melbourne, and that is the heart of the matter. The Shire is a fair way from Olympic Park.''

From day one? I don't know when Turner decided he wanted to stay in Melbourne but I'd suggest that on Day One Riolo agreed to terms, the Titans issued press releases announcing Turner's signing and Turner made public statements about how much he was looking forward to joining the Titans. Maybe it was Day Two, Day Twenty or Day Fifty when he changed his mind, but for a period of time Turner, at least publicly, was keen to go north.

Finally, this solution has the potential of leaving Melbourne out in the cold. Let's say Turner agrees to go to Cronulla and the Titans and Sharks nut out a deal upon which the Titans release Turner to the Sharks. Where does that leave Melbourne's "contract" with Turner? Melbourne have argued all along that their contract is effective. Whether they are right, wrong or are just bluffing on that point, the mooted Sharks deal has the potential to make Melbourne look silly. In effect, they will be in a no-win situation. Either they drop the whole matter which knocks over their argument that their contract was valid. Or they stand their ground which has the potential to draw the matter out even further. While I'm sure that if they agree to let Turner go, that they will try and sell it as "being in the player's best interests" I don't think that the rugby league public will buy that. I believe the Titans' stand is motivated, at least in part, by wanting to demonstrate that they are not powder puffs in the league - I wonder if Melbourne will be similarly motivated.

In short, I think the Cronulla solution will only work if the Storm can be appeased. Otherwise, the solution just puts the Storm in the position that the Titans are currently in.

Yep - that is my point. As I said, I suspect it is probably just that the Sharks/Titans/Riolo are talking the options through and that the Tele has worded it poorly.
