So May either goes to court defending an assault charge or the claimant goes to court defending himself for giving a false statement to police.

If May did what the alleged victim claimed then he should be held accountable. However if the alleged victim made a false claim, he should be charged. As well as the police interrogating him and all those involved in the fight. May has history, but we know nothing about the other party.

Sure, but I'm talking reality here. Lot's of time and effort, what's the probability of getting a conviction etc.

Steven May is a famous AFL footballer, 2xAA Backman and premiership legend, a brave fighter who went toe-to-toe against Golden Glove Jake Melksham at a South Yarra Burger restaurant. If he didn't know who his clientele was, who he was trying to rob, that's kind of on him.

No one is going to court for giving a false statement in a he said/he said case. Police will rely on witness statements and medical reports etc. and of course any footage if it exists.
