Notes:
The dramatic fall in form of Steven was one of the most disappointing parts of 2011. After leading the 2010 BF Player of the Year pre injury and finishing 7th, Sal finished the year in 30th place in this years Player of the Year. He suffered a knee injury during the pre season which put him behind the eight ball and he never recovered. Gone was the confident player of the past few years and in his place became an indecisive, slow, fumbly player who struggled for form across the whole year at both AFL and SANFL level.

His best game of the year was the final game of the season, picking up 26 disposals and a goal in a display reminiscent of his best form of the past couple of seasons. There is no doubting that a fit, in form Steve Salopek is an important part of our first team. Ball winner, good skills, versatile, but whether he can recover and show that form on a consistent basis is dependent on a significantly better pre season to get himself super fit. If he cant find that form again in 2012 then you’d suggest he would be offered for trade at the end of the season.

Sal has had a great pre-season and is injury free for the first time in a looooong time...

Steven Salopek's ready to put his head on line

HAVING endured four seasons plagued by injury, Steven Salopek believes he has finally conquered his fitness demons.

The talented midfielder revealed this was the first year he had avoided off-season surgery since 2008 and hoped it would be the springboard to a return to peak form.

Notes:
After a disappointing 2011, Steven failed to record a match at AFL level in 2012. It was a tumultuous year for Sal. After being dropped to the SANFL reserves by Glenelg early in the season, Steven changed clubs to Port Adelaide mid season. His form was erratic although his best was very good throughout the year. Steven chose to leave the club at the end of 2012, to seek a new home via free agency. Steven played 121 AFL, 43 SANFL and 4 SANFL reserves matches whilst on Port Adelaide's list.

Good on him. I actually always liked Salopek, it felt like he never got an even break on or off the field with all the bad luck he had to endure. Glad to see he has been able to transition away from footy successfully back in Vic.

A “no regrets” mentality from a decade in elite sport spurred AFL footballer-turned property gun Steven Salopek to take a punt in the commercial sector.

The former Port Adelaide midfielder, who started his real estate career at Crabtrees in Melbourne’s southeast after an impressive 121-game AFL stint, recently took up a role as a senior executive with global player Knight Frank.

Last remember him when I was at the SCG in 2011. Not a soul forward of centre towards or goals when someone defending it blasted towards our goals and it landed 50m ahead of anyone. Salopek zooms towards it, 10m clear of any of the pursuing Sydney defenders and virtually unstoppable as he heads for a certain goal. Suddenly stops, cramp or hammy who knows? Emblematic of both our year and of much of Salopek's career.
I had to look up whether he ever played again and to my surprise he did, the week after in R9. Then a big break until the last 6 or so games that year.
