Southby >>>>> SOS

Why?

Not even Carlton itself agree with you, as SOS was selected in our TOTC at FB ahead of Southby. But I suppose they are interchangeable there, the fact remains that in Silvagni's era there were more good or greater forwards running around.

I know - I am biased because I am a Geelong supporter. But I don't think there is much separating these 2 players anymore. Scarlett is now 3 times AA and IMO was robbed of the Norm Smith today. Fast catching up to Silvagni.

Fast catching up?

He'd better start beating forwards in the quality of Lockett, Dunstall, Ablett, Carey et al. soon, not to mention getting four more AA jumpers.

You really should have made this poll public, because I wanted to see whether it were mostly just Geelong supporters who voted Scarlett or people who just hate SOS because they feel he didn't deserve FBOTC (or thought he was overrated, either way) and would 'struggle' because he was 'the scrag king'.

I'd say Scarlett is a better ball-user in this age of cheap marks at half-back. SOS was always exciting with his runs, but a bit iffy.

Overall and as a pure defender though, I'd vote SOS over Scarlett and anyone in the league in the last 20 years, at least.

Yes, I'm a fan, but I don't think there's been anyone better.

Interesting to see how Scarlett would go against the likes of Ablett,
Dunstall, Lockett, Carey etc.

Great player, but SOS IMHO
Like to see how SOS would cope with the rule. Would be absolute F+cked, with the hands in the back and the chopping of the arm.

It's like comparing chalk and cheese, not just in terms of the player, but in terms of the era.

Anyone would admit Silvagni would not be able to get away with 3 quarters today of the tactics he utilised back then, whilst Scarlett doesn't play in an era of traditionally dominant full- forwards.

The forwards now are fitter, faster, more athletic and better skilled, but not as strong and imposing as the mid 90's. Scarlett's opponents today would run as much as the midfielders who kicked the ball to Silvagni's opponents would have. Backmen have to work a lot harder in this day and age.

Certainly the two best full- backs of their era however, by a long, long way.

Scarlett has incorporated creativity into his repetoir whilst SOS was a pure stopper.

It would be very interesting for both to switch, and see how they fair, right now though SOS.

The great thing about Scarlett and Silvagni is that they prove it takes more than brawn to beat the games best forwards.

Both are incredibly smart defenders, who outwit their opponents with timing, speed and positioning.

Both were roughly 192-3cm and weighed 95-6kg but consistently stymied blokes 15 kilos heavier and 5cm taller.

Champions of the full- back position, loved watching SOS, now love watching Scarlett.

SOS played on some of the best full forwards ther ever was. ABlett, Dunstall and Lockett.

Gets him over the line.

SOS was nothing but a try hard scragger, hard very little footballing ability, his only play was dragging down an opposition player's jumper.

Scarlett easily.
(see above - no footballing ability)

What's wrong? I sense a little built up anger. Did he jam his tool in your Misses' laughing gear?

HAHAHAHA, now that's funny :p.

Explain how that's funny?

Glass has been a good player the last 2 seasons.

Scarlett has been simply outstanding since 2001.
2001 2nd Geelong B&F
2002 4TH Geelong B&F/ International Rules rep.
2003 All- Australian/ B&F winner/ international rules rep./ fewest goals
2004 All- Australian/ 2nd Geelong B&F/ 2nd fewest goals in AFL
2005 2nd Geelong B&F/ 3rd fewest goals in AFL
2006 Geelong HOF member/ 2nd fewest goals in AFL
2007 All- Australian/ premiership FB/ 5th Geelong B&F/ fewest goals in AFL

There's no point even comparing these two, because unless Glass maintains his form for another 4-5 years, then he's not even in Scarlett's league.

Get over Glass Eagles fans because he's no Scarlett yet. He was drafted at pick 11 in 1999, yet has been a recognised defender only since 2005/2006, ironically since the Eagles turned the corner. Prior to that he was pretty darn... well nothing really, he was nobody.

Scarlett was drafted pick 45 in 1997, and by 2000 was a rising star nominee and earmarked as one of the quality young defenders of the game, albeit in a struggling team, since that time he has taken off.

That's what this thread is about. See the Poll Title or the first post and if you still can't work it out see if there is an adult at home that can explain it to you........

I'd already voted, and made my point, I was asking somebody about Glass, you didn't need to chime in. Don't get pissed off because you made a fool of yourself.

Why are we having this debate ?
Because Scarlett nearly won the Norm Smith

Big Deal!!!!!!!!!!

Who did Scarlett play on most of the game in the GF , Westhoff , tough challenge that also when u consider every time the ball came into the port foward line, the Geelong players easily out numbered the Port players..

Compare that to Sos in the GF of 1995, virtually kept the great man Ablett kickless
In 99 , Sos beat Carey all day in the GF at CHB , only time Carey got kick is when he was moved to the centre and broke the game open , Parkin failed to keep SOS on him
Other things that put SOS way ahead of Scarlett:
How many times has Scarlett kicked 10 goals in a game ?
Has Scarlett ever come 3rd in a Brownlow?
And Scarlett is playing in the era of, if any of backmen or the side is under the pump , "let's all flood back"

I rate Glass ahead Scarlett
