Stevens to essendon.

Stevens wont be the difference in essendon winning a flag and not..port are a better team than us and they couldnt win with him. As ive said b4...we build our own at essendon its worked well for us so far so why change it. Keep pick 13...choose ricky dyson.. and in a year or two with the kids coming through we will have an exciting young midfield

who said we were losing trade pick? yeah ricky dyson will b good but we wont lose it?

Essendon going by what scooter posted would be giving up two first round picks and danny jacobs for ray hall and nick stevens...talk about being bent over in a deal. Sheeds is a nut i know but he isnt crazy enough to pull the trigger on that deal

Two draft picks????

Essendon lose Jacobs and pick 13
Essendon get Stevens and Hall

I assume Mark Bolton to Port would be part of that as well (otherwise why would Essendon want Hall?)

Pick 6 and Bolton isn't even close to a satisfactory trade for Stevens. Try again.

From Essendon, maybe. Until they realise that they're getting no-one and can't afford to pay Jacobs, Solomon and Bolton.

I think Port may have to settle for a first round pick (albeit, it'll probably be quite high) and a second round pick or decent player. Can't see any clubs parting with two first round picks, especially if one of them is quite high.

Rubbish. Essendon, Collingwood and Melbourne would all hand over 2 first round picks for Stevens, especially Essendon seeing as though Solomon will be leaving.

Praytell, which club?

Essendon won't. Collingwood have to get them first. Melbourne, perhaps, but it won't be picks #3 and #5. Richmond, probably not since they'll want to trade pick #6 for Brown or Solomon. Hawthorn, perhaps, given that they may get another first rounder for Rawlings. Geelong have enough midfielders. Bulldogs want key position players. North may have to trade their first round pick for Rawlings.

Solomon leaves, but Stevens will ask for what Solomon was asking. Salary cap problems all over again. That's why we won't get rid of draft picks.

As for Stevens. He'd be very very handy, but I don't think he's the difference between us winning a flag and sneaking into the top 4. I think Sheeds would much prefer to take the draft picks and be patient for another year or two while Reynolds, Winderlich, and Watson improve. Not to mention Ramanauskas.

Collingwood will hand over the top two picks. Where will they get them?

Melbourne... Not convinced.

Take the Dons off that list, pigs have more chance of flying

I'd be disappointed if we were. Hird is not bigger than Essendon, we can not let the long term future of the club be dictated to by one player. After all, that was why we let Solomon go.

I think what he means is that while Hird is around, we've got greater potential to snare another flag than after he retires. After he retires, we'd hope to have someone like Stevens, an emerging young superstar, to stand where the champion veteran once stood.

As for having them both in the team at once...*pauses to remember Hird raising the 2000 cup high into the air...*

I say go for it. It's not like Carlton where they turned their back on youth completely to snare good players for big bucks. Essendon is extremely reluctant to let go of it's young guns, and with good reason, but when guys like Solomon leave, with Jacobs and perhaps Bolton likely to follow, why not get maximum value in the trades, considering that this year's draft pool is considered weak?

I don't think the draft pool is considered light on talent, but it is very light on maturity.

from what the club has said, its more like they are not prepared to pay dean on the same level as the club's last three best and fairest winners... they offered him a deal that they believe he is worth and he turned it down. Maybe they think Stevens is somebody worth that kind of money.

Perhaps. I think Stevens is worth $350k to $400k. Solomon has gone, Jacobs is likely to go, Barnard and Alessio retired, Misiti to take a big pay cut, Mercs to take a pay cut, Hird and Mercs on the veterans list. We still have those back-ended contracts to deal with, and new contracts to plenty of players, but a reasonably conservative estimate should show that we'd have room for Stevens.

However, guys like Welsh, McPhee, and Cupido will probably be lining up for a significant pay rise next year, so I'd rather we prepare for that.

Very good point stevo...just because we might have some room to move in the cap next year doesnt mean we need to blow it on one player. Bullen, reynolds, winderlich. mcphee, will all demand bigger contracts next time. So will mj,jj, and lloyd. There is plenty of young talent at essendon. Lets build on it and add to it. Its been the sheeds way for 20+ years and it has got us 4 flag in 7 gf appearances. Stick to what works...geoff raines was the last big buy and that did not work at all.

Doubt we'll win it next year, but depending on how the kids come through next year, we could give it a real shake in 2005.

I agree, Hird's probably only got two years left.
