Surely they wouldve checked the planes records by now to see if the antenna was checked as per the November directive, once you see that story start to circulate you get the files right away, surely someone at MAS wouldve checked by now

Based on that answer it wasnt checked, but they dont want to say it.

To be honest, they are not saying a lot of things.

Civil aviation chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman confirmed that defence radar picked up an “indication” that the plane turned back. He said this was why the search operation had been extended to the Andaman sea.

Hussein stressed this was just a “possibility”.

An aviation chief gave the coordinates for the last known radar sighting of the missing plane.

Hussein refused to be drawn on whether the plane changed course. “The family members are the ones I feel for so much,” he said.

Asked about the lack of transparency. “China obviously feels aggrieved because so many of their nationals are involved ... it will not changes our focus.”

Hussein did confirm that last sighting of the plane was picked up by the military.

Hussein was asked why it had taken so long to reveal that the plane had turned back. He said the authorities were still not sure whether the plane had turned back which is why the search continues on both sides of the peninsula. “We have nothing to hide,” he said.

The reporters jumped on the military bloke when he said they had an unidentified plane 200NM NW of Penang. He said there was no way of identifying it as it was just a plot on their radar at 02:15.

Pretty sure the first reporter question was about a body in a life jacket which was quickly dismissed as being uncomfirmed.

And in 4 years the 747 and its variants will have been in operation for 40 years. Also in most cases the accidents have been from human/pilot error rather than the aircraft's design.
No plane flying for the major western carriers today is inherently more dangerous than any other plane, apart from perhaps DC-9's still getting around in the United States, though even they are safer today then they have ever been (and you'd find pilots out there that would swear by them)

747 has been involved in 126 accidents or incidents, resulting in 2,861 fatalities.

As far as records, the 747 has the dubious distinction of 3 separate record death tolls: the highest death toll of any single aviation accident ever (520), the highest death toll of any single airplane accident (583), the highest death toll of a mid-air collision (349).

Few crashes have been attributed to design flaws of the 747.

A military official admitted they were “baffled” by the lack of a distress signal from the aircraft. He confirmed that the military was “not sure” whether the plane had changed course.

“It is a possibility ... we did not track it in real time. The data appears [to suggest it changed course] we have to respond,” the military chief said.
He added that the raw data would be released in due course.

CNN turned off the presser.
