Whats everyones opinion him so far. For mine i think i vastly underrated just how good of a player he is. Its so handy to have him in our team and stop players like Simon Black and Andrew McCleod who normally tear us to shreds., and he seems to be finding a bit more of the ball with Worsfolds permission shown by his 27 touches this week. He can play all over the ground and has probably been close to our top 5 best players this year. Id say at this very early stage pick 12 and 28 seems to be a bit of a bargain..... Personally i couldnt be any more happier with his performances so far.

Whats everyone elses thoughts.......

Was undecided on him, and probably swayed a bit by the radio commentators, but he's been great. You also need to look at who he's played on to see how effective he's been.

Sure hindsight is a great thing but I still can't believe the amount of bagging the coaching staff recieved for this trade at the time.

Have faith was the decree at the time and it's well justified.

Was always a good trade for mine.

we need that defensive influence on our midfield. it releases pressure on the other midfielders. he also provides awesome leadership and sets a great example. plus he is still onlt 25. he still has alot to offer.

Stenglein is one of the big reasons why we have stepped up this season IMO.
What did we give up for him again? Paul Johnson and a pick? Bargain.

He's been a very handy pickup.

Its funny how dramatic the difference is from week to week- at subiaco, he looks out of place next to the rest of our midfield- average pace, and ordinary footskills which frankly aren't up to the standard we expect from our topline midfielders.

On the road, though, he's exactly what the doctor ordered- makes space very well, plays solid, smart footy, fills the holes and has done two brilliant jobs on the kinds of midfielders who traditionally cut us to pieces in away games. The big question mark over getting him was that he actually hadn't done many traditional blanket jobs at Adelaide during his last season there, but he's been very impressive in the two hard tagging roles he's been given so far this season- one of the very very rare taggers out there who does his job by smart positioning and accountability rather than the scrag-o-rama tactics favoured by some others.

We may only get 11 quality games out of him this season, but it will be the 11 games where a good tagger adept at playing a different brand of footy to our regular style will make a big difference to the result.

At the time, I thought the deal we did was a fair transaction for Adelaide and West Coast and I still think that's the case- Melbourne's willingness to give up a compensatory pick for Paul Johnson is the thing which makes the whole 3 way deal look a lot better.

Your being a bit hard on his Subi Oval performances there Mead. The game against Geelong wasnt his best but i thought that his game against Bulldogs was good. He kept Cooney to 15 touches and got 15 touches of his own and i thought he did a great job considering the good form Cooney had been in the games before. As far as his kicking goes, id say its about on an equal level of Chad Fletchers which is still better then alot of midfielders in the AFL.

This week id like to see Stenglein play forward tagging Tadhg Kennelly. Getting Tadhg Kennelly out of the action as has been shown by Melbourne and Roos is an important part of stopping Sydney from getting the ball in there forward line. I agree with the person who has said he has been a key in our great start to the season. Id say hes probably in our top 3 in our most influential midfielders atm. I just hope he keeps up the good form.... which id say atm is prolly at career best.

He definitely did pretty well on Cooney, but its just a case of us not really needing to run serious tags at Subiaco.

IMO Stenglein's footskills and pace are significantly below that of the Judd/Cousins/Fletch/Kerr/Embers quintet- he's not a bad kick, but that ability to hit a target on the lead whilst travelling at full pace which all our elites have is a bit beyond him.

At subi he should play more as a HFF, HBF rather than starting in the centre. I think you're spot on about him playing on Kennelly- Stinger has the smarts and marking ability to do be dangerous across the half forward line, and you need someone who'll play tight on Kennelly.

Another fantastic trade for us. Chick and Stenglien over the last few years have been huge additions to our side. Stinger was just about BOG against Brisbane and for the first time we have a true tagging midfielder.

Everybody talked about the Eagles midfield weakness in that they are not accountable. Well now we are and were dominating. Cant be happier with that trade.

Looks like we all did ok on this one. We got Scotty Thompson with pick 12 who has been a great addition. We also got a second round pick aswell whivh we kept and used in the National Draft.

Hope Stinger keeps up the good form for you guys (except against us :D )

when trading for a player you generally have to pay a tad over the odds. i think we did that but in return we got a ready made established leader.

on your behalf there was alot of variables. thomspon while talented had only performed in 10 games, all last year before he got injured. he looks good but there is/was a chance he might not make it (especially in comparison to stinger). that slight doubt meant we had to part with a 2nd round pick. in a weak draft that didnt mean much to us, especially considering we traded plonker paul johnson for a similar pick.

i think the trade was a very good win/win/win.

Awesome pickup. Look how he manages to keep people like McLeod and Black out of the game to the point where you'd actually have to check if they were playing !!

He still manages some timely goals and good possessions.

He looks like the defensive run with midfielder we were looking for

I was hoping Chick would fulfill this role a few years ago but unfortunately he was unable to be fit enough due to injuries

I also think it will be the big games and finals, paticularly away from subi where his value will show the most

shall we did up the stinga won't get a game with us thread us? :p

It was more a case of Stinger will play off of a HBF, and guess where he is named to play.

I remember a number of people saying that he wouldn't make the best 22 and would play WAFL and struggle to break into the side ;)

Stinger is a quality player who is very under-rated. He is tall defensive midfield. The beauty is that he is tall enough to go with the likes of Hird (who he has a very good record against) and he can take someone much smaller and quicker as well. He is not quick but he is a smart player who stops his opponent by knowing where to position himself. Always goes for the hard ball and displays leadership qualities both on and off the field.

Every club would love to have someone like Stenglein.

even though it goes against all evidence, logic and even reality, im going to stick by my assessment that stinger is not good enough to get a game for the eagles and wont play a game in 2005

I can only think of one poster who would make a statement like that, and I'm pretty sure he's banned from bigfooty...
;)

there were certain people saying he would not make the 22. that was always not going to be the case. however, i think alot of people were questioning whether we have enough room for him to play midfield. i think he has been named on HBF every week but this aint little league. in the AFL players go wherever, most clubs only play a 5man forward line anyway.

Yep, the biggest question mark I had over him was whether he was still capable of being a quality tagger against smaller quicker opponents, since he was actually very rarely used in that role at Adelaide in '04- in that last year Ayres played him more as a regular clearance player, and I was worried that was a forced move rather than just another string to his bow. He'd be of very limited value to us in that role, because he's slower and less skilled than pretty much every one of our starting midfielders/bench rotation.

Of the four games he's played so far, he's done 3 very good tagging jobs on McLeod, Cooney and Black, which pretty much dispels any concerns about him being able to play that role. As a tagger, he's very valuable to us.

In the end, it was a good trade for us and the crows, although less so for the Dees- the crows got their asking price, a good young South Australian kid and a 2nd rounder, we got Stinger effectively for our first round pick and Paul 'future delistee' Johnson, and Butler/Waters/Seaby stayed put, as they were always going to. Everyone's happy :)
