AFL Autopsy Stomped by the Giants

Not necessarily expecting to take anything away from the opposition with the state of the cattle but the Suns, Tigers and now Giants have been absolutely stuck in the mud for large periods due to surprisingly rigid team defence.

Can’t really explain why it’s happening but it’s a good surprise.

Thought the decision to stick Gresham in at centre bounces was absolutely disgraceful, you’ve got an opportunity to throw Kako or Johnson or Clarke through there for a bit of exposure and you go with Gresham who while he was sort of effective, just careens forward, is constantly calling for the ball at all times and trying way too much. Itty bitty Stringer.

He kinda looks like something between Draper and Bryan. Bryan athleticism to follow up but Drapers marking and aggression. He looks at least 3 years off being ready to competent number 1

i think we were sucked in a little by vigo's vfl form against some very below standard vfl ruckman, has a lot of work to go, not a bad thing tho hes very very young still

Jeff White was impressed with Vigo against the Dockers.
I would have played him against the suns too.

This week the giants ruck really showed he is not able to compete with the bigger bodies.
He was smashed in the hit outs, but had a similar disposal count to Briggs.

We just need to use VIGO when Goldy needs a rest....or if Reid/McKay gets back, can put Blakiston into the ruck.

I liked that we gave May a couple of ruck contests.

Wright had 16 hit outs, maybe we should have just put vigo in against Riccardi and made 2MP the main ruck next time.

Don't disagree with the second sentence. I meant that he strikes me as more of a mobile, round the ground style ruck than one who will be a dominant tap ruckman. Still, we are 2 to 3 years away from knowing whether he will make it at all.

Yeah that was noticeable. Looks like the young guys must be very coachable and getting the structural things right. Add the strength and skill of a couple of pre-seasons to that.
Rosa drafting good listeners who don't squib. They probably also get to see a lot of Merrett and Durham highlights during the reviews.

It probably helps it’s the only message the young guys have been getting.

100% agree, but given injuries I would have sent McGrath in. but also bursts from Kako & Johnson.

Ok looks like McGrath did attend a couple too and Perkins too.

Just worried Scott may break Merrett/Durham and Shiel if he over works them in there.




It would actually be quite good if Perkins and McGrath could show something in the midfield at the back end of the year to help out.

Possibly, I just think training something specific until it becomes an instant reflex, then having to unlearn that an train in something else until that becomes instinctive is just setting guys up for failure unless they’re a football savant

Yeah consistency is gold. That's why I protest with bawling outrage when the melters appear after a loss demanding Scott be sacked. It's too early.

McGrath went in there a little bit last night and offered a subtle reminder that he is a viable rotation in there because he's agile, can turn on a dime and is quick by hand and from hand to foot.

They seem absolutely determined to make Perkins as a centre square player work but he's just far too flat footed and reactive, which isn't really a problem ahead of the ball but a big issue when you need to read cues and preempt someone like Tom Green getting on the charge to silver service from the ruck.

Reckon you need another midfielder of Setterfield type frame to lessen the physical load, even if there is still a heavy reliance on Merrett at least the physical load will be lighter.

He may have turned the corner now.
There really isn;t anyone banging the door down in the reserves. And we have seen a lot of all the kids.

I think maybe he has been resting Zach Johnson starting him as sub, but keepiing him in.
I would probably bring El-Hawli in and give Lual a week off, or rotate him through the sub role. Or even just send Gresham back to carry over sub.

McGrath looked to do a few nice things with his center square work in the 2nd half.
We were pretty good across the park (for us, not for AFL standard) with everyone having a crack at some stage and standing up to the GWS pressure for the most part.
I imagine that the Giants coaching staff weren't too happy with their game, but its hard to know if that's because we made it difficult for them, or they were just going about it half-arsed (could also be a bit of both).
We continue to let ourselves down with poor disposal when it matters, especially forward of half way.
Have really liked Kako's last few weeks (although I didn't see the Tigers game), just needs to get a few more touches.
Roberts, Duursma and Clarke all had some very good moments across 4 quarters. Merrett was good again but his disposal was off.
Ridley very good as well, but we need him to really hit his longer targets, especially with Martin out and Redman struggling a bit

We're talking about consistency of messaging that the young players have experienced under one coach, as opposed to the inconsistency of messages the older players got when we changed coaches so often.

I would omit Gresh or Perkins before Lual. Just posted in the preview thread for next week.

Liked the effort early, the struggles to score were frustrating though.

Can't speak much on the second half, it became background noise when the game was over as I struggled enough turning the TV on after last week's effort.
