1. Stop playing for frees. It's just a bad mindset. We were not bad tonight but Ashton Hams is a disgrace. The more I watch him play the more I think he's out of his league and needs to compensate by playing for a free. Pushing back into a player and trying to trick the umpire that you're being held just shows his head isn't in the right mind frame to play footy.

2. NicNat. Stop handballing off to players who are not in a position to offload quickly or run a line. I keep seeing him take a mark and dish out a handball to a player who isn't in the right position.
Great game but lets sort this one out.

3. McGinnity. Why must this guy insist on giving away a stupid free (usually high or in the back), or a silly 50m at the crunch stages in matches? I wonder if the Eagles stats guy has picked this up?

All very good points. We spend way too much time playing for frees and the umps have noticed, and now it's like the boy who cried wolf.

Nicnat just needs to compose himself, still learning and hopefully he wise up soon.

Mcginnity isn't on his own, scooter has become quite good at giving away dumb free kicks as well

I wish I could put a secret post so no other supporters can see this but they all do it (well not all but way too many)

agree on all 3, particularly point 1.

hams needs to go. hopefully dick's fitness is nearly up to scratch because hams is a massive liability at the moment.

Can we also train Jack Darling to stop going for chest marks. Put the dukes out son!

Agree.
A bit harsh on Hams. He is out of his depth, yeah but what do you expect from such a short bloke. He also never gets head high contact frees anymore, even if its legit. But at least he plays right on.
Hes not gonna outmuscle someone or win a marking contest. So if hes not doing something to win the ball you know theres no place on him for the team.

Re. Nat - I'm pretty certain he does this because he listens to the senior players almost too much - the guys he often hands off to are Daniel Kerr (who thinks he is unstoppable, no matter how bad a spot he is in) or Priddis, who always wants his hands on the pill. When he's in the clear, he's more likely to make a good decision.

I reckon the playing for frees stems a bitfrom the big Cox. He is good at it because of his size and where he plays. You'd think others in the team would see the benefit of using a bit of skill to get a free their way. ( who wouldn't want a free)
He gave one of the umps a friendly pat on the back last night...I mean talk about being comfortable with his role.

It wears thin on the umps except in the ruck contest because no one knows what goes on there..
Not knocking the big Cox because he is one of the best ever and has such command of his game that he can dictate what goes on.

Lynchy had similar trouble circa 02-04 IIRC
I remember going to West Coast/North at Etihad in about 03/04 and Lynch ran out of the goal square directly towards the centre to take a chest mark and the ball bounced off his chest and out of bounds on the full.

* I might have exagerated that, but only by a few metres.

Deliberate out of bounds - free kick!

probably. Hams and Adam Selwood have been doing it from day 1.

Cox: gets some contact and stops expecting a free
Shuey: seeks high contact to get free when he's going to get caught
All 3 Selwoods: drop the knees, shrug tackles, seeks high contact when about to get caught, burrows into packs to get high contact. It shits me when commentators keep saying all their frees are there.
Hams: His whole game plan is about getting free kicks. Disgrace.

Someone at West Coast needs to council these players. Whilst free kicks are great, in the long run, having a "if I can't get the ball, or if I am going to get caught I will play for a free" mentality is not an advantage. If you're going to do it, do it sparingly.

Yeh agree. It's not finals oriented footy. Please come back next year without this mindset.

Hopefully two of the offenders in Hams and A Selwood are doing it in the WAFL next year anyway

Why does Hams not get any free kicks? He is almost always taken high but NEVER gets any frees anymore. It's not his fault he's short FFS. Was taken high twice in 2 tackles in a row last night and nothing but called a ducker when they were just crap tackles

Hams is depth. Have people forgotten we are missing our 3 best forwards from last year? He isn't that great but is providing something.

Can we train people to stop saying "dukes" while we're at it.

Please don't take something that Brian Taylor says in commentary and turn it into part of the vernacular.
