All immigrants. Unproductive Muslims are a waste and the ones who actually move to different countries and actually be productive are the ones I am more than happy to let them stay.

Is that Islamophobic?

Then you fail at reading.

Anything is questionable when you don't agree with it.
Firstly polls like this, are questionable to begin with. Then you source your links from an organization called the 'Religion of Peace' an anti-islamic organization. Then two of your links -nothing there. Then when one follows the Pew Forum etc-well firstly the links are dodgy and when I do eventually find something they tend to disprove your claim. Patrick Basham/Democracy Institute pretty compromised organization also. So think I can read, but don't see that your claims are verified by these links.

http://www.smh.com.au/federal-polit...ional-torture-convention-20150308-13ymlk.html
An independent expert has found aspects of Australia's asylum-seeker policies have breached the United Nations Convention Against Torture.

A report addressing concerns about Manus Island, as well as recent amendments to maritime laws, is due to be submitted to the UN Human Rights Council today.

It was prepared by Juan Mendez, the UN special rapporteur on torture.

Human Rights Law Centre director of legal advocacy Daniel Webb says the report finds detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island, and conditions at the centre, violate the convention.

Mr Webb says the torture convention prohibits subjecting people to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the report confirms Australia is failing to meet this basic standard.

The Manus Island detention centre has been the focus of ongoing detainee protests, including hunger strikes and violence.

In February, the UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights urged the government to reconsider its refugee policy.

It was reported last week that the Abbott government is facing a legal challenge that seeks to hold the Commonwealth legally responsible for conditions in its overseas detention camps.

******* stupid game
I think its fair criticism that there is a double standard in how some folks have treated past and present Coalition and Labor governments.

The Siev X is a prime example. There is a whole conspiracy movement built around the tragedy to the extent that Howard, Ruddock and the AFP were branded murderers. There were memorial events to mark the fifth and tenth year anniversary and there was even a public remembrance site set up with some sort of column art iirc.

Yet there were many tragedies that happened during the Labor administration that has largely gone forgotten.

Candles only seem to get lit when there is a Liberal in charge.
Yep. I was in Canberra recently and down by the lake is a very poignant memorial to those who died when SIEV X sank. Each of the 350 or so dead is individually named and remembered.

I looked around for another memorial for the many more who drowned during the Rudd/Gillard years, but nothing.

A definite double standard.

Sure to help them to win a seat on UN Human Rights Council.

Ms Bishop told Fairfax Media that Australia's bid is "consistent with our nation's history of promoting and protecting human rights".

"Our strong and principled stand on numerous human rights issues in our role as a temporary member of the Security Council will form part of our campaign," she said.

"We abide by our international obligations and we are confident that our experience and our commitment to human rights protection and promotion makes us a strong contender for the UNHRC."

Do Australian authorities torture people?

I had a skim through the report.....seems pretty vague because there are so many countries reported on but its interesting that they classify the US drone strikes on Yemen citizens as "torture" too ....

http://www.ohchr.org/EN/HRBodies/HRC/RegularSessions/Session28/Documents/A_HRC_28_68_Add.1_AV.doc

In the absence of information to the contrary, the Rapporteur concludes that there is substance in the allegations presented in the initial communication, reiterated above, and thus, that the Government of the United States, by conducting an air strike that killed at least 12 and injured at least 10 individuals, the majority of whom were civilians, has violated the right of these civilians to be free from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, as provided by articles 1 and 16 of the CAT.
Doesn't seem anything more significant other than the usual slap with a wet lettuce by a UN report.

They are borderline a war crime. Arbitrary death and maming of the civilian population.

Given how extensive the colateral damage and that targets are often neither picked nor located by actual humans, the whole process is rather terrifying.

Your tone is rather dismissive, you dont value human rights highly I take it

It seems they have, at least indirectly.
Giving people food, shelter, medical care, education, all the latest in technolgy etc etc is torture nowadays??

It's torture in the minds of those housed there because they paid thousands of dollars to someone and didn't get what they wanted.

Cry me a river.

No the actual torture bit is the torture.

Mandatory detention for children. Lack of access to proper medical care. Unsanitary living conditions. Innability to prevent abuse. Read findings from one of several reports most hotlinked here.

Like I said, cry me a river. Kids wouldn't be there if their parents didn't put their lives at risk in the first place.

Did you read the report?

Just about every country is apparently guilty of torture with such a vague definition.

The SMH article made it seem like the report was primarily concerning Australia's asylum seeker policy.

You would have just accepted your lot if you were Syrian or Afghani, and not hoped for something better for your kids? Glad you're not my old man.

Thanks for that.

The SMH and ABC love the headline story but when you read the report it's clear there are no allegations of torture against Australia. The so called Convention against Torture is actually named the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. It really detracts from the UN report to conflate horrific torture and murder of prisoners in the Philippines, Mexico, Morocco, Western Sahara, Uzbekistan, and Nigeria with (assumptions of) what is happening at Aussie controlled refugee camps.

If it's pure persecution, where you don't know if you and your family are going to be murdered when you wake up, would you leave them to jump on a boat?
