Stop the Reverse Draft Idea

As you all know, this year, the draft will be done in a reverse order, which the majority of people do not like, and agree that it makes the draft less interesting

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/savethedraft

If we got enough people to sign that, i reckon that the AFL might just realise that they have made a mistake

Fake signatures are encouraged and welcome
Do you honestly think that the AFL would listen to us?

I just can't believe some people are missing the point so spectacularly.

It's either this (reverse order) or no tv coverage at all. That's your choice.

Serious question - if it wasn't reverse order, who would sit & watch/listen to the whole thing?

Given we are most of us footy tragics, most of us probably would.

However, as much as BigFooty seems like a self-contained universe; and as much as people think it matters what we write on here, we are a tiny percentage of the population.

The Reverse order is an attempt to engage those other than the full on footy tragics. Does anyone outside of BigFooty really know the top 10 so well that if, say, Morabito's name i called at 6, then it means he was passed over by Freo? Of course not! And even if he did, that would be pretty exciting of it's own to see who Freo actually took!

As well, this gives the network a chance to put together footage of the top 10, and gives the count drama. It means people get the chance to see and learn about their new players. Not everyone watches endless YouTube clips of people no-one outside the industry really knows.

Now, it's a different type of drama. Given the choice, I'd go with it the normal way, but I'm pretty pragmatic, unlike most here it seems.

There'll still be suspense (at least up until the top 3 which is set in stone). There are 25 players who could go from 5 - 30.

Just stop moaning FFS. TV coverage in prime-time is better than listening to it on SEN on a Saturday morning. **** me, you'd think the AFL had decided to have 11 year old cheer leaders with the reaction this is getting!

Big deal. SOOoooo not important

I think televising the draft is pointless anyway.

The reason it works in the States with the NBA and NFL is that the guys being drafted are pretty much household names already anyway. People have been watching them for years in the college system, or they've been high school prodigies who still get national television coverage (LeBron).

The average AFL fan has no clue who any of these kids are. They may have heard 'Scully' before, but the vast majority would have never seen him play or have any clue what kind of player he actually is.

For example, the Swans are tipped to pick Rohan. My knowledge of him extends to what people on BigFooty say and a youtube video where, to be honest, he looked ordinary. Now, the kid must be good because if you're tipped to go top 10, you must be decent. But I'm not going to get excited on the draft day when they read out his name. I'll wait until he starts playing some games and showing something.

And I'm pretty much a daily visitor to BigFooty. Regular people really won't care.

However it would help a lot in getting the youth more exposure. If the draft is successful, maybe there would be more coverage of the national championship and a few games. That works out well, there is more coverage which should see grass roots eventually be able to support itself and more AFL teams making the right choice.

I reckon you reckon wrong.

Andy D never admits he's wrong, let alone for some two-bit bullshit internet petitions.

You probably like Facebook petitions too, yeah? They make our world a significantly better place, don't they? Don't they?!

Agree . The AFL never admits it is wrong about anything which is why i often refer to them as the ARFL (Always Right Football Leauge).
There is now way that signing any petty internet petition is going to change anything.

The reverse idea is just stupid. All that will be missing is Bert Newton and a few B grade celebs and they could turn it into an episode of 20 to 1. Clearly someone was watching that show one night and thought it would be a good way to do the AFL Draft.

I'm glad the draft is on TV again, but it doesnt need tampering with. The suspense counting from 1-10 will be just as great, if not better, than 10-1.

Brilliant, it's not too late....I'll get on the phone to Bert's and 6 D-grade celebs agents (for token vacuous comments) pronto :thumbsu:

Stupid idea. Surely there's more suspense wondering who's going to be picked at 9 or 10 or whatever than who's going to be picked at pick 1? Everyone knows who's going to be picked at pick 1 about a month before the draft even starts.

We just need to make our draft day like the nba and nfl. Their coverage is great and lacks no bordem like the AFL.

Reverse top ten is stupid. But i think the AFL will realise it and change back to the normal format next year, with or without a two-bit piss ant petition

Maybe next year they should run the Melbourne Cup in private, and then announce the finishing order of the race in reverse on big screens at Flemington, to make it more suspenseful.

I think it's a good plan.

Love it.

Footy fans only watch the draft and the real suspense and intrigue comes from the sliders.

My plan, rather than sitting through their crap, is to record it, and fast forward through the first 10 selections, and look at them as a whole.

I'd actually rather do that than sit through the countdown and here them crap on about who the number one pick might be...

I think the reason this is so offensive is because they show a lack of respect for the audience. Instead of putting some work into some interviews of the kids and their families and what they have gone through to get where they are they are choosing a ridiculous gimmick. They could show some footage of kids playing (other than what is on youtube) and talk to coaches and recruiters. They could give some insight to people who don't play the game but like to watch. They have so much access to the football world to make it an informative entertaining show, but the best they can do is reverse the order. Come on, it is an ignorant, boring, pointless and most of all, contrary to a "live" draft process.
