"(Acclaimed Australian sports television producer) David Hill openly says rugby league is the best television sporting product in the world.

"Point to me a club that is spending more money in development, education, training and advice in grassroots development and advertising and promotion than Melbourne.

"All indications are that our game isn't worth as much as what the AFL is and that's wrong.

Waldron said he would schedule a meeting with McGuire to try to improve Melbourne's free-to-air television coverage after being shown just once from its last 160 games.

"We will certainly catch up with Eddie in the next few weeks so that we can air our thoughts on how we'd like his assistance to make the game grow," Waldron said.

"He certainly believes in what we're doing and he understands that league is his best sporting product that he needs to promote in the marketplace.

"He's a believer in (rugby league in) Melbourne ... we'd certainly expect to receive (coverage)."

from an advertising point of view, afl is a far superior television product to rugby league.
* an average afl game goes for 3 hours, compared to rugby league's 2 = afl has greater quantity
* an average afl game has about 25 goals, comapared to an average rugby league game having about 7 tries = afl has more breaks in play to squeeze in ads.
* an afl game has 2x5 minute quarter time breaks and 1x20 minutes half time break, compared to a rugby league game having 1x10 minute half time break = afl has more time between quarters/halves for ads.

Wow.

Now tell me what that has to do with RL.

This is the RL section isn't it?

So that means we can big RL up in here doesn't it?

Whats the problem?

Who is David Hill? I googled him but nothing came up!
WHo is David Hill??

http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/story/5355884
The announcement was made today by FOX Sports Chairman David Hill and FOX Sports President Ed Goren.

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=page.feature&FeatureID=8
"I make it my business to check SportsBusiness Daily every day."

— David Hill, Chairman & CEO, Fox Sports Networks
http://www.smh.com.au/news/league/b...n-alcohol-issue/2005/12/13/1134236063081.html
He said a speech by Australian-born and internationally acclaimed television sports producer David Hill referring to NFL players at the NRL's annual conference last week had made a big impact on league officials.
http://www.newscorp.com/news/news_076.html
DAVID HILL NAMED CHAIRMAN, CEO, FOX SPORTS TELEVISION GROUP
Stepping Down from FOX Broadcasting To Oversee Fox's Worldwide Sports Media Activities

I think you get the picture.... he is one of the most influential sports TV people on the planet.

You've clearly never watched a game of league, otherwise you would realise that Nine leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of inserting ads. Tries, goals, scrums being pack or, if too long has gone without one being shown, just because they damn well feel like it.

And you're talking about the number of ads in a game being a good thing? You are one sick puppy!

Thank God for ABC Radio on Sunday arvos.

Good stuff from the ex AFL guy, the best person for the job.

Lets hope he's real good mates with eddie.:thumbsu:
Must be a different David Hill to the david Hill I know ., the NSWman , ran SBS , in charge of soccer etc . Was very anti AFL .probably the one responsible for holding back Australian Football on pay TV .

Doesn't really matter though . Business is business and if you're drawing 8k to a game you're not going to get FTA.

Thanks now i know who he is! I seriously didnt find much on him but anyway!

'David Hill openly says rugby league is the best television sporting product in the world.'

Im a bit confused as to whether he means as in sporting coverage, or game made for Tele or just best Sport!

Still with any of the above you would have to think he might be a bit biased! Not just agaisnt AFL but Soccer, NFL, basketball! Golf, Tennis and F1's also being very lucrative and well watched around the world!

The thing about rugby league is... if you know much about how to play, strategies etc.... it is totally fantastic to watch on TV.. so good in fact that RL fans often watch it at home instead of going to the stadium. That is why the ratings are so good yet the crowds appear small.

I know a few passionate RL fans who have never been to a live professional game before in their life.

The fact is RL is set up best for TV with the camera along the line of scrimage . It has the advantage over RU and NFL in that it doesn't have ruck mauls and running plays restfully that are hard to follow on TV .
But other sports have good clarity, like soccer and the action isn't hard to follow . Basketball has good clarity and action in a compact area and so would have to a front contender . But the sport they really reckon has it all is ice hockey on the NHL . Clarity , action , non stop, contact in a compact area.

Obviously David Hill is biased and any sport would benefit with good FTA coverage . American Football in Australia and Australian Football in Amercia both had boon times will it lasted . Undoubetly Gaelic Football would get a good boost if it was regularly on Australian FTA .However there is thing called ratings and you don't get a second shot at it if you've failed once in the ratings .

I hope the Storm gets some more coverage! But the ARL doesnt really seem that interested in Melbourne so therefore we aren't intrested in it!
The ARL/NRL has moved a treasured State of Origin game to Melbourne which came under heavy fire, a Tri-Nations match, which also came under heavy fire and there will be World Cup matches played in Melbourne in 2008. Trust me, the big wigs in rugby league know the importance of rugby league in Melbourne.

Thats all well and good, but i only found out the SOO was in Melbourne after reading it on here, and only in the last week has there been any advertising! I've heard one radio ad!

2 marquee games dont make up for the lack of respect the ARL gives to the Melbourne Storm! Besides i think RL is quickly losing out to Soccer in Melbourne!

They have had ads in the Herald Sun most days. From the figures they're quoting, it seems ticket sales are a bit stagnant. (they've quoted the same number of tickets as sold over the past 6 weeks)
