In Nicks' press conference, he was asked about Rankine. I am paraphrasing here, so don't expect me to recall verbatim, but he said that Rankine is one of the best players in the competition and if any side lost a player of his calibre they would struggle.

There's something a little irksome about that mentality. Nicks was visibly upset, but his words are going to be scrutinised. In my mind it's absolutely no excuse. Look at Hawthorn losing Will Day. He is arguably Hawthorn's best player, but his loss hasn't dampened the Hawks' resolve.

Rankine's inclusion would not have materially changed the final result of either game. We were never even close. We were uncompetitive. Insipid. I'm so frustrated, upset, embarrassed. I wish we had finished outside the top 4 and just gotten knocked out in the first final.

I don't see any positives to come out of these two results. None. Yes, a couple of individual players can hold their head high. But over all, it was just an abysmal, diabolical, shambolic and utterly humiliating result.

It's not even good finals experience

If anything can come out of the wreck of this finals campaign, i truly hope its a rebuilt midfield. We have an off season to try and prise out a quality one...maybe its Oliver, we have draper and edwards as young and up and coming, get them straight into the midfield group and get a big preseason into them. I hope we can prise out a young ruck to put pressure on ROB going forward and as good as he was on the wing, get Dan Curtin into that midfield group with a view to his development as a centreman like Bontompelli plays. If we have to take a step backwards next year while the new midfield develops if it can lead to longer term succesd i'll wear that.

Oh, and the elephant in the room, get a much better midfeld coach. Van berlo has overseen us lose the stoppage most weeks in a side that finished top at the end of the minor round...pathetic

The best teams play their best footy in September - we definitely are not anywhere near that yet.

It’s also part of the journey to replicating Port’s last half decade.

Port Adelaide are a good signpost for this

2007 - 119
2008 - 13th
2009 - 10th
2010 - 10th
2011 - 16th
2012 - 14th
2013 - 8th

This is our challenge - to regroup - use this as an opportunity to have learnings and to not repeat the mistakes of history

Comfortably the worst finals performance by any team, of all time
 
Real Sliding Doors moment (take note Purple)

If the Suns played even 2% better or weren't rogered by the umpires against Port, they finish 4th and face us.

Then, it is pretty likely we win and the belief carries us into a very different prelim.

Although there's a fair chance Dimma probably gets the GC lads up for a famous away win, totally outcoaching his opponent and we go the exact same way.
 
I know one player shouldn't be the difference, but I've got no dout the Rankine saga and bad media attention had a huge impact on the way our season ended.

I was never confident about us winning the flag even before the saga, but I was certainly expecting a preliminary final spot.

People will have different opinions but we will never truly know how things would have went if the Rankine thing never happened.
