Analysis Strange fixturing, favouring some teams

I love that it's biased.

Interstate, we have been hearing for years and years that the big Victorian clubs have no real advantage with their fixtures, despite only leaving the state 4 or 5 times per year.

We have been told that non victorian teams travelling interstate every second week is just the way it is and to cop it sweet.

We have been hearing that MCG is the home of football and offers the Interstate teams no real disadvantage when it comes to finals or a grand final.

Hell, even a regional Victorian team like Geelong have been forced to host finals against MCG tennat clubs like Richmond despite finishing above of them, and thats just the way it is. It's not "fair", but stiff.

So when the finals ends up being in either WA or QLD, and the interstate teams will scream from the rooftops how unfair it is, and how much they are disadvantaged by it, spare a thought for what half of the AFL teams cop every season.

A tough draw, a lot of travel, and plenty time spent away from home might just, even slightly, make the future of afl fixtures just slightly more equitable
100%!

Well WC and Brisbane getting a great run compared to all others, can't deny that, no different to Richmond in a normal year I guess, so flags all round hey.

Really?

How many neutral games are they playing?

They've played 4 neutral games so far.

Last year, Richmond had 8/22 neutral, 5/22 with HGA, and 9/22 away.

So far (including those fixtured but not played) WCE has 4/11 neutral, 5/11 HGA, and 2/11 away.

So far at least, it looks a hell of a lot better than what Richmond got.

Sheet that makes for a long day.

Out of interest, what time would they get home to Adelaide?

Dude, 17 games last year in the Melbourne CBD...

9 games away from our home ground, and 8 of our games on our home ground were against other teams that call it their home ground (9 if you include Geelong), only 5 did we get the home ground advantage you get twice as often, and even then it's not as significant.

My heart bleeds.

I just saw before a animation of the plane flying ‘across the country’ back and forth showing where Collingwood have been... I mean is that for real?

So what does this tell us? The Non Vic teams are actually quite even, having 4-5 home games and 2-3 away games each (GC being the outlier with 8 home games but since we aren’t a premiership contender eh). GWS surprisingly has had the best draw in terms of Non-VIC contenders and not Brisbane so far.

The Vic teams have had barely any home ground advantage this year, but as a positive, nearly all teams have had 80%+ of their games be neutral. Coll/WB/Hawks the most disadvantaged, North/Geelong the most advantaged. Overall, while this won’t be a fair season, it also is still fairly even without one team getting a significant advantage so far.

And final fun fact, 54.8% of all games this year have been neutral matches. This is the highest percentage in VFL/AFL history (its usually around 40%). So in one way, this really will be the most even season ever.

Profit over equity is garbage

there won’t be profit this year

they are trying to stem the bleeding so the organisation can stay solvent

but sure let’s have an equitable fixture this year and bankrupt the game

any other year - you might have a point

this year there are thousands of jobs on the line

the fixture is sh*t - some clubs are going to hVe it worse than Others - some players worse than others - it’s the sacrifice to keep the game alive behind 2020
Your third point is what profit over equity means. Trying to minimise business loses is the same thing as putting money over equity.

Being in a Hub hotel seems to be the biggest disadvantage not where the game is, especially if it’s the other side of the country (time difference Harder to stay connected with family/friends)
Top teams like eagles and pies are examples.
Unless lions and suns are moved to a Perth hub or S.A for the final five weeks there will be an asterisks if one of those teams wins it.

profit and revenue are two vastly different concepts

doesn’t mattter how much revenue you have - if costs are continually higher - she’s all over

Trading equity in fixturing for a massive profit Over a slightly smaller one doesn’t make sense

trading equity for survival... does

Dude people only say "profit over something" as a proxy for "money over something". They arent distinguishing between revenue and profit. The point is that people are focusing on money (revenue or profit) instead of other concerns that they believe are more worthwhile.

Ensuring teams get a fair draw in 2020 is more important than having a league in 2021 and beyond?

I'm not sure the victim complex and VICBIAS thing you are continuing with and comparing to makes sense. The GF being played annually in Melbourne is the only real genuine disadvantage for clubs for whom that is not their home ground (note I did not use the term interstate).

The other disadvantages you cite are erroneous at best. Yes, non Victorian teams have more travel than Victorian teams. But that is balanced by the fact that you have genuine home ground advantage for half the season (and all home finals). Playing a home game against a fellow tenant is not an advantage - an advantage is measured by what you have in comparison to your opposition. Just as a 5 day break is not a disadvantage if your opposition also has a 5 day break.

Comparing the 'disadvantage' of half your games at home and half away to what teams face this year is not even close.

Take my club for example. Since the fixture restructure, Hawthorn have/will have played:

WC in Perth
Freo in Perth
GWS in Sydney
Sydney in Sydney
Geelong in Geelong
North at Marvel
and 4 neutral games (including a 5 day break vs Collingwood's 9 day break)
0 games with home advantage
and will likely go to a South Australian hub next to play Port and Adelaide.

Now, to be honest I don't care that Hawthorn's draw has been tough. I recognise and understand the necessity. But the 'disadvantage' of 11 home games and 11 away games every year is not even remotely similar. It is also unavoidable due to the location of clubs, whereas the question was asked in this thread as the congested fixture appears to be completely avoidable and creating additional, unnecessary inequalities.

The funny part of the victim complex is that it is WC fans (and even the club itself) that has been most vocal (and most affected) by the notion of playing away in a hub and the notion of finals being played in Queensland (which you brought up but has hardly been mentioned in this thread). That's the thing with a victim complex - it pervades your view on all matters, despite the fact that WC have been one of the most advantaged clubs in the comp this season.

Jeez - talk about conspiracy theories. It’s been mentioned in passing a couple of time, but let me spell it out.

Teams travelling into WA have to isolate for two weeks. During that time they can play each other, but they can’t play the WA teams until they’ve finished their isolation.

So the Hawks and Carlton can play each other but had to wait until this coming Sunday before they could play either Freo or WCE.

The AFL then decided to do this festival of footy nonsense, cramming in a load of games - which effectively only buys them a week. Leading to all these 4-5 day breaks, but WCE are perceived to have been kissed on the d**k.

I’m not comfortable standing up for WCE, but it’s not favouritism, it’s the rules of the state.

The only way the two WA teams could have joined in the festival of soft tissue injuries would have been if the AFL had sent three or four teams into WA. They could have played each other in isolation and then Freo and WCE could have played four games over a fortnight after this weekend.
