Checked the Hawthorn F C website, there is a jumper number excell document there that shows all the numbers worn through the clubs history. Highest number was given to G Ablett in 1981.......number 61!! Not sure if he wore it in a game that year. Some very interesting stats there showing several players wearing the same number in different games in one year. I wonder what the record for that would be?

5. What's the highest number worn at every club
(I've only looked at players with 20 or less games from 1986-now, and a handful of lower number games from around 1980 as per the AFL Tables site. Corrections welcome)

Adelaide - #51 (Randall Bone, 1992/93)
Brisbane Bears - #53 (Ian Kidgell, 1991)
Brisbane Lions - #48 (David Calthorpe, 1999)
Carlton - #56 (Ang Christou, 1991)
Collingwood - #65 (Andrew Witts, 1985)
Essendon - #56 (Brendan Moore, 1987)
Fitzroy - #58 (Mark Dwyer, 1986)
Fremantle - #50 (Neil Mildenhall, 1995)
Geelong - #57 (Russell Mitchell, 1985)
Hawthorn - #53 (Dale Foster, 1980) *
Melbourne - #59 (Andrew Dale, 1986)
North Melbourne - #59 (Robert Kerr, 1987/88 and Darren Steele, 1984)
Port Adelaide - #44 (Jarrod Cotton, 1997)
Richmond - #57 (Allan McKellar, 1986)
St. Kilda - #60 (Dermot McNicholl, 1990)
South Melbourne/Sydney - #60 (Craig Davis, 1988)
University - #31 (Tommy Graham, 1912 - Records very limited)
West Coast - #53 (Ashley McIntosh, 1991)
Western Bulldogs - #60 (Tony Liberatore, 1986)

* Glenn Nugent (Hawthorn) wore #55 in an AFL match in 1990.

5. What's the highest number worn at every club
Essendon - #56 (Brendan Moore, 1987)

Thought this was worth bumping with the Essendon top-up players set to wear numbers going up to #77 (Sam Michael). If they end up playing home and away matches they'll be by far the highest numbers ever worn.

Top up Bombers:
47. Marcus Marigliani
50. James Polkinghorne
51. Aaron Heppell
54. Josh Freezer
55. Anthony Tipungwuti
56. Jordan Schroder
58. Sam Tagliabue
72. Clint Jones
73. Mitch Brown
74. Mitch Clisby
75. Jared Petrenko
76. James Magner
77. Sam Michael

It's generally something of a status symbol to have a low number, yeah, but often players who could take a lower number if they wanted choose to keep their high number because it's part of their identity.

I thought so. I think its more so personal preference

Without looking, is this a list of premiership players who won flags/played in GF's in different numbers from 1980? Feel free/alter to add as necessary, note that they have had to have played in a GF in the 2 different numbers for the number to count.

Geez that's a pretty comprehensive list!

Only things I noticed were Dew wore #31 (not #32) at Hawthorn, and it's Shaun Burgoyne (#8 in 2004) not Peter who went to Hawthorn for the 2013/4 flags.

I do have a very hazy recollection that he might have worn a higher number in the opening pre-season comp game that year, but switched to 6 well before the proper season started. Unfortunately the footy records for that pre-season aren't online.

I've found a copy of the 1988 Panasonic Cup grand final online between Geelong and Hawthorn but alas Hall wasn't selected for that game.

You may be confusing Tony Hall with Tony Symonds, who wore # 32 in 1987.

Leigh Matthews wore #32 in the 1971 GF win, and #3 of course on 76, 78 and 83.

Nah, it was definitely wasn't Tony Symonds. They played Hall off a half back flank in his first appearance for Hawthorn in the opening pre-season game of 1988. I reckon he might have worn a higher number for that one game. It's irrelevant to the discussion anyway, he wore 6 in every premiership match that year.

BUMP. Angus Litherland can be added to players to wear 3 different numbers at one club.

#42 (2011-2012)
#31 (2013-2015)
#17 (2016-present)
