Stratton: Dislocated Knee

Whose the likely replacement? Could Riley Milne be it? Or will it def be Tom Murphy.

If I were a betting man...

Murphy 3-2 on
Schoenmakers 8-1
Milne 25-1

Thank god...best news considering what could have been.

Ok time for some levity....

This is stratton so he will bandage his leg up and start next week...when he will out run and out mark naitanui, cox and kennedy.

Got to say I had a pretty shitful sleep last night thinking about Stratts injury. Absolute super player and has won all our hearts over I think.

The effect he has had on our team cannot be measured, but if I had to throw a dart at it I would say about 30 - 40 points a week. Him and Gibbo work together like those Albino Twins in The Matrix, and they have dragged Gilham and others in our backline up to a higher standard as well.

If they reckon it is 4 to 5 months, then that is 2 to 3 months for Stratts, he is a Gladiator.

We can still win the flag this year, I thought we were screwed without Stratts.

Could not agree more with that sentiment HodgetoFranklin. The injury really soured the night. I was contemplating leaving before the final siren.
Hope Ben is up and about soon.

For a bloke who only arrived last year, he has left a huge hole.

It's pretty much a season ending injury, even when he's ready to play games he'll be lacking general fitness and conditioning. Such a shame, he's such a great kid to watch and play. Really hope he comes back strong from this! :thumbsu:

Minimum 6 months if it's ruptured you'd think.

Time to let Stratt's heal for 2012 and focus on the vacant key defensive role.

Murphy is probably the best fit for now.

What's with all the doom and gloom? Going by some of the posts here, you would think it was the end of the world or that we had just lost Buddy, Rioli, Hodge and Burgoyne in one hit. He's an awesome player and I love his work every week, but he is just one player, not superman.

Sure it really sucks for him and the team, but as I always like to think, crisis creates opportunities. It's time for someone else to step up, for the defence to work around covering his loss, for the midfield to step up their game and help out, and for the forward line to keep scoring and keeping it down their end.

It's not the end of the world. :thumbsu:

Quote from The Final Siren on One HD..."PCL, 6 - 8 weeks. Not as bad as first thought"
Quote from a Hawks player on Twitter: "We don't know how long Stratts is out for. The docs are still looking at the scans."

I think it really does depend on a number of factors. Most of all, how quickly or slowly the ligaments recover. This (if I'm correct) can vary from person to person.

Not disputing it is a PCL however, that was not a standard garden variety PCL.
That was an horiffic injury and I have no doubt that there are going to be a lot more factors at play, other tendons and soft tissues, rather than just recovering from the PCL in isolation.
Get him 100%, if that means he doesnt play again this year then so be it.
Ryan Schoenmakers has to stand up and be the replacement, if he isnt, then it is likely that there is a dark cloud forming over Schoey's long term future at Hawthorn.
I really hope I am wrong but my spidey senses are tingling and not in a good way.

It's what appeared to be a severe hyper-extension of the knee thats got me really concerned. That just can't be good.

Happened just in front of us at the G last night and then I watch it on After The Game last night when they replayed it over and over again. Hard to watch. Tough kid too! Hardly showed any sign of emotion.

His absence will surely be a factor. And Murphy, Schoenmakers, or whoever, will really need to step up to fill his role.

Fingers crossed the results are better than it looked.

only saw it on the big screen and i went queasy ! to see it more then once now not sure i could have

I was watching the game on Saturday night thinking - well, if Cyril has to take a week off this is a pretty good one. Wet night games seem to often result in injuries from players slipping and sliding about, especially if they have suspect hammies.

I was gutted when Stratton slid into that horrific injury, quality defenders like Ben are tough to find, we have no ready made replacement that is anywhere near as tight as he is across half back, or anywhere near as good in the air. Shoey would have to improve out of sight to approach Strattons level, Murphy also (apart from the fact he is not moving well at the moment), maybe Litherland could get there in one more season. It leaves an enormous hole in the backline with nobody obvious to slot in there. The ripple down effect is that we need Gibson and Gilham to stay clear of injury, losing another defender could send us into another 2009 style tailspin.

Perhaps Lisle could be given a run at CHB as a tall option?

Stratts has been a fantastic contributor for us since his first game. Having him out injured is very doomy and gloomy given how ordinary our defence has been since Croad's final bump on Selwood in the granny.

It's not the end of the world. :thumbsu:
For some here it might as well be. He's not the Messiah (nor a very naughty boy) but he has become a walk-up start for every game.

Unfortunately for Stratts, he is gone for 2011 if he has sustained a rapture of the PCL. Often with PCL's there is collateral damage of tissue and fibres as it sits behind the knee cap for protection. Bone damage can also occur which is the suggestion given he has dislocated his knee.

PCL's are not as common as other ligament raptures and occur in car crashes and hyperxtension of the knee. Along with the ACL, the PCL form an X like structure and control the back and forth motion of your knee and also prevents the shinbone from moving back too far.

Best result would be a tear not requiring surgery which could have him back and running in 3 months. This outcome would result in Stratts regaining full strength of the knee joint.

Full recovery from a PCL rapture with other tissue and fibre damage typically requires 6 to 12 months. A full knee reconstruction compromises the strength and operation of the joint making it difficult to regain similar function post the injury.

But then again, I am no doctor. Best of luck Stratts!:thumbsu:

so whats the go here? some are saying he is out for the season, some are saying he'll be back by round 10. he is my fav hawks player and definitly soured the victory. one of the most importnat players in our team no doubt and fill leave a big gap. i reckon give scheoy a chance to see how much hes developed and if he bombs out, give the gig to murphy

Here's the truth SG.... None of us know how long he'll be out. We are merely speculating. In fact, no one will be able to tell you exactly. The doctors treating him will probably give him a ballpark date, but even that may be off.

We should all just sit tight and wait until the club release further news, because I'm sure not even they know yet.

In any case, we will move on and another 'soldier' (as Clarko/Kanga say) will take over Stratts' spot. We have depth to cover the lad, and being a team sport I'm sure the coaching staff will be able to strategically select the most appropriate team each week from whoever is available.

The cobbler has been injured and was listed as 1 week away last week, so he might still be some time off before seniors.

He's had a nagging achilles injury and the club has been taking no chances whatsoever. He'll need time at Box Hill, and he'll need to show a bit.

Exactly. Absolutely no chances or short cuts will be taken with Ben. He's a young defender of rare quality and will play many, many games for Hawthorn.

And you're spot on: they don't know yet. What they do know is there's no break, or ACL issues, so that's good news. So we hold tight and see how it pans out.

All the best Ben.

Best of luck to Stratts - hard to believe he's such a quality defender after only one season with the hawks. Reads the play incredibly well, and seldom ever makes mistakes in the back half, which makes him a seriously valuable player.

Looked a very bad knee injury, all things considered, wouldn't be surprised if it's a season ender, considering ligaments, tendons, tissue, knee structure, strengthening, getting fitness back etc.

Not all doom and gloom. Murphy was good for long periods last season, and with Gibson-Gilham-Murphy across the back half, we should still be pretty right. Our 2008 Flag side only had Croad/Gilham (with Hodge floating and Murphy sometimes) for the monster forwards anyway...

Great to see him be so stoic also. Shows he kept his head, even in intense pain. Mum and Dad would be proud, as are all Hawk fans.

PS - Stratts may need some coaching reprogramming for wet weather. Saw him attack a contest in the first quarter (southern side 50m line) similar to how he did his knee in the third. When players are diving across legs looking for frees, you can't smash in with your legs upright and exposed like he did. I know he was trying to kick the ball off the ground, but the option wasn't right. Could hurt himself, or kick someone's head off.
