St Kilda Football Club Review - Round 9 2001

Collingwood 14.14.98 d St Kilda 12.8.80

A disappointing day for the club on Saturday would be an understatement to say the least. The coaching staff had done a terrific job in analysing the Collingwood running game and the intensity that our players showed in the first half of football, by continually running down & harassing the Collingwood midfielders, had put the team in the position whereby the Magpies would have gone into half time querying their own game plan. What happened after the main break will continue to be analysed by our coaching panel throughout this week. Certainly there is a thought that the intensity shown in the first half took a lot out of our players, and once the sting went out of the game a little and the injuries began, the Magpie midfielders where able to gain the ascendancy through their running game.

The area of concern for the Saints predominately can be shown statistically in the area of handball receives, as the players ran past and collected a handball 48 times in the first half compared with 22 after the main break. The team needs to learn to find the find balance between being able to shut down an opponent when multiple goals are kicked in succession, and not being so negative that our players refuse to take any chances and run with the football. We played a very stagnant game in the second half, and even with the game up for grabs at three quarter time, there was obviously a feeling amongst some players that the game had to be "closed down" rather than "won".

It is all about creating a "winning culture" amongst the club. Certainly we can learn from others such as Collingwood in 1999 who managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on numerous times because of a lack of belief in themselves. The circle has now turned for the Magpies who have performed admirably in similar situations in 2001. Even our VFL team, Springvale ( with 50% listed Saints players ), have shown many times this year that they are able to knuckle down when the game is in the balance & believe that "they will not get beaten".

On a positive note the club is delighted with the performances of several players including 18 year old Justin Koschitzke ( 17 possessions ) who took to his task at Centre Half Back on Josh Fraser and showed that he is capable of performing consistently at the highest level. Stephen Milne ( 2 goals ) was again very lively in the forward line and will continue to improve as he gains more strength and experience. Although suffering injuries that may keep them out for future games, Fraser Gehrig and Austinn Jones continued their fine form in defence. Gehrig can now add Chris Tarrant to his list of scalps so far in this season.

VFL REPORT

Springvale 20. 15. 135

Williamstown 14. 17. 101

Goals: Davis 3 Lawrence 3 Pitt 3 Carmody 2 Smith 2 Walton 2 Baker Berry Carroll O'Brien Robbins

Best: Robbins, Walton, Harrison, Carmody, Pitt, Elliott, Rigg

Another very good performance by the Springvale team on Sunday with a 34 point victory at Williamstown. St Kilda was represented by 9 listed players and 2 rookie list players. When the game was there to be won, several St Kilda players put their hands up for senior selection and helped the Scorpions across the line. The Springvale team has a very strong belief in themselves & this has been very apparent when games have been up for grabs throughout the season so far. This is obviously a belief that needs to replicated into our senior St Kilda side.

Of the listed players, Ben Walton was his usual dominant self on a wing with hard running providing 30 possessions and a couple of goals. Ben tends to be able to consistently dominate VFL games and really needs to take his opportunities when promoted to senior level. Jason Blake was very steady in defence and will no doubt come into senior calculations for a much needed tall defensive role. Chad Davis helped the Scorpions gain the ascendancy in the 3rd quarter with three terrific goals, and finished the match with 22 quality possessions. Tim Elliott got his fourth game under his belt with a much improved effort in the ruck. He took some telling marks in the second half and dominated the centre bounces to set up clearances for the strong Scorpions midfield. Steven Baker, Damien Ryan, Daniel Wulf, Justin Berry, Chris Oliver and Justin Peckett also contributed well from limited opportunities. Probably the most promising aspect to come out of the game though was the performance of Steve Lawrence in the forward line. For the first time this year he was able to jump for and take some strong marks and converted for 3 goals for the afternoon. He hit the contests very hard as usual and was very clean in his 17 disposals.
Several injuries at senior level may pave the way for several players who played in this game to make their way back into the senior St Kilda team.

In the Springvale Reserves game, Jason Cripps managed to get through another 4 quarters without any major discomfort to his much talked about hamstring. He is starting to run with the ball a lot better as the season progresses and provided he is able to train on Wednesday night will play again next week. Mark Wittison ( Rookie ) also showed his class during the Springvale Reserves game with some clever goals from Centre Half Forward.
