Again, I know this may come across like a cheap shot, but here's an Essendon supporter downplaying a serious off-field issue as just "marriage problems". Hilarious spin. I take it you're aware of the details of what he's like, right?

No need to spin serious off-field issues using flowery language. Bad habit that.

Back to my point. Character, leadership, and club culture off-field seems to be as highly correlated with winning premierships as ever. Clubs who target troubled talent so far have not been rewarded.

But digging deeper, I honestly believe it's a reflection of a deeper belief at the club that the path to improvement is improving the natural talent levels of the playing list. Would that observation be correct? If that belief exists at Essendon, then when a time comes for the list to seemingly stagnate (be it 6th on the ladder, 8th, or even 4th), the perceived solution to the problem will be to again look for better talent. This ends up signalling to the rest of the list they're not quite good enough. This mindset just doesn't work.

Wow

I don't get this post

When clubs stagnate .. don't they all " look for better talent"?

What's exceptional or wrong with that?

I would think a professional football club should always be looking for better talent

Yeah he's just trolling. Richmond missed the 8 in 2016 and chased talent in Prestia and Caddy to improve their list.

No, I don’t know the details of what he’s like and neither do you. Apparently he’s a cheater in his romantic life.

Your point about success is completely redundant given the Dogs won the flag 18 months ago.

My point - and it remains - is that as a supporter if you’re going to start judging footballers on their behaviour in marriage/relationships then be ready to be hating a huge percentage of the playing population. That’s just reality.

It’s pointless turning it into a “my club club is holier than yours argument”. It’s moronic. You’re trying to sit on some moral high ground while one your players distributed revenge porn to his mates, the result being a young lady having had a nude photo of herself rapidly sent around the country. He should be charged by police and sent to court, and the only reason he wasn’t is so she could attempt to retain some shred of anonymity.

Well that’s something Stringer hasn’t done, I guess. He’s also never, that I’m aware, drunkenly stood over a woman pointing a pair of chopsticks at her and threatened to “rip her campaigner out” with them.

So re-read my first post, and again, get your hand off it.

Stringer can be a quality player but I believe they are playing him out of position at the moment. The guy is a forward not a mid. His game was by no means terrible but he didn't have much impact on the game & looked lost at times. The Dons have recruited a player they don't really need as their forward line is already impressive without him & tried turning him into a player they need but I'm not sure is up to it. Time will tell though, Its only round one.

Stringer was a Bulldogs player when that happened. Since coming to Essendon, he has made impovement. Granted if he went to the Demons, he'd probably be in prison by now.

Again, I’d love to hear the justification that being at Essendon has stopped stringer from cheating on his pregnant partner

I’m very much in the forward camp and that’s where he should be, but he showed a little bit when sent into the middle, and impacted some contests. I’m happy for them to do it but it should be pinch-hitting, a couple of mins a quarter at most.

He should attend centre bounces and instantly move forward. Just doesn’t have the capabilities to be a midfielder.

Probably impossible.

But we won't let one player ruin our clubs season.

We usually crumble around player 34.

Lol Essendon supporters have been down playing serious off field issues for years, it's their second nature by now.

I know this will come across as a cheap shot, but an Essendon supporter saying "honestly, who cares what goes on off-field?" is hilarious and proves you've learnt nothing.

Off-field professionalism and character is a VERY influential factor in winning premierships these days.

Yeah, we better ensure he stays away from Japanese restaurants.

Guy who has a career high of 21 possessions - has a 16 possession game so is a bust?

I don’t know what others are expecting, but we got him pretty cheap so if he can be that 10-18th ranked player, with a couple of blinders - I’ll be happy.

Not quite.

There’s always sacrifices you’ve got to make when building a list.

Essendon seems to prioritise maximum talent at the expense of character. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just an observation.

You mentioned Richmond trading for Dion Prestia.

The difference is Dion Prestia was Vice Captain of Gold Coast behind Gary Ablett - he’s reportedly a quality person off-field. Yes, we wanted talent, but we didn’t necessarily pick the most talented guy available, we chose the best leaders, the best characters, etc. We ruled out disruptive types with great talent, whereas Essendon DGAF about that.

I don’t want to rule anything out, but it’ll be interesting to see if Essendon’s strategy pays off.

It’ll require strong leadership from the top to keep the group right, but if they band together, nobody will question their talent.
