Travel Studying abroad

Hey guys looking at some advice or even stories of those with experience. I'm looking at studying abroad for a semester next year. I go to Monash and currently doing business. Has anyone had experience with studying abroad? Everyone I've spoken to says it's one of the best things they've done in their life. My mum's not keen on me going because of the money factor but I've heard you can get loans put on your HEX along with scholarships? Also the thought of travelling on my own for half a semester seems daunting but I'd assume you'd meet so many people.

Personally looking at going to Europe which would allow me to go to other countries pretty easily.
 
Everyone who I know who has done it has loved it. I personally would be too lazy to do it. Seems like a lot to organize and I wouldn't even know where to start

Can you afford it? Where would you live?

Meeting people wouldn't be a problem, but if you have a passport to organise + travel insurance and all that other stuff, you're going to be hit hard. I don't know many who have studied overseas, but I have had a few friends recently head to England to go and work and they're loving it. Different though I guess cos they're older/more set up.

Where are you getting the $10k from?

The beauty of study abroad is that a large portion of the money is provided for you:

~$6k OS-HELP (which has to be paid back but does not accrue interest)
Still get Youth Allowance while you are over there (works out to roughly $4k in many cases).
Universities tend to provide at least $1k as a bursary/grant.

There's $11k right there and you don't need to save a cent to get it.

I'm pretty sure you can live on campus at most unis, but I haven't looked at that much yet. If what smiling buddha is saying is true I think I'd be fine. I read up about it and from what I've read you only need about 15k, so I think I'd easily be able to save up the remaining needed plus a bit more for spending. However I would need to organise a passport.

Have done it before (2010 South Africa) and am planning to do it again (2014 Germany?).

Cannot recommend it highly enough.

If you are a Monash student, going on exchange to either South Africa or Malaysia should be a piece of piss as far as the acceptance procedure is concerned.

Without a World Cup to attract you, though, I'm not sure if Joburg is your best option.

I heard a rumour that an Aussie got seriously bashed there on exchange recently and the entire Australian cohort on exchange at the time got flown back early. That's just a rumour I heard, though, you'd best do your own research (ie ask questions at the Monash Abroad office). Nobody was assaulted while I was there - we all had an awesome time.

Yeah after reading a post on Joburg on Stalkerspace on FB last night that's not a place I want to go to. Read that the Monash in SA is terrible and that pretty much everything they had was broken, they'd been robbed a few times and security was just awful, but surprisingly they said they'd love to go back.

I'm thinking Europe, possible France or Italy and then making trips to England to watch 1 or 2 Liverpool games. Will definitely go have a chat to the Monash office though, cheers.

This is the way to go, mainly because you're in Europe you can go to other countries pretty cheaply. You could knock out a bunch of countries if you plan it right.

Interesting time to bring it up mate, I'm 3rd year at Monash doing Arts and Commerce, and looking to Study Abroad next year for a Semester. I'm looking to do more Arts units over there, rather than Commerce, as they seem easier to get approved. Monash has a rough stab at needing $2000 a month while you're over there.

For the record I'm hopefully going to Canada, it was the only school I could find that had enough units that could possibly be accepted by the 2 faculties.

Yep Canada is my 2nd option. Looks like an amazing place to go visit. Only problem I have is I'm doing HRM and Sports Management as my 2 majors so it's likely I won't be able to have enough units that are available over there unless I actually changed one of my majors.

Haha you're sounding very similar mate, which campus are you at/what year?
I'm choosing out of HR and Accounting as my major. If I'm doing Accounting I should be fine, but if I choose HR I basically can't go, can't squeeze it in. So I've just applied under the assumption Ill choose accounting, and if I get accepted I guess I'll have to decide.

What's wrong with Calgary or Winnipeg, anything bad, or just nothing there?

Haha I'm 2nd year mate. Was at Peninsula all last year but ended up at 3 different campuses this year (Caulfien, Pen and Berwick) due to trying to get closer to home and then timetabling issues. Problem I've got is that nearly all my Sports management subjects (As I was based out of Peninsula last year I had to choose one of the 3 that they offered there) are next year meaning I'm having to do HR this year. Hopefully there may be a campus overseas that offers a similar type of course (though I highly doubt it) otherwise I might have to think of changing that major, which could ultimately end up helping me expand by job opportunities too.

Currently on the last week of the best 5 months of my life (so far). I've talked a fair bit on here about how fantastic exchange is, so I'll just try and answer your questions a bit.

I'm doing business as well (plus an arts degree, but my psych subjects weren't compatible) so I did 3 business units and my 1 remaining arts elective. All are counting towards my degree. It was a little stressful getting subjects approved, and I was pretty much stuck with them by the time my home uni gave them final approval, but it all worked out. Try not to stress about your subjects, pick a uni that offers a decent number of business units and it'll work out.

I was lucky that I saved a fair bit before I left, but with the $6k loan from the government and $1k grant most universities give (or more at some uni's), you've got a good start before you touch your savings. If you don't go overboard you can do it quite cheaply and if you're lucky enough to get a scholarship you'd be insane not to take advantage of it. If you're concerned about expenses, the US is a better option than say the UK, purely for the cost of living/exchange rates.

I understand what you mean about feeling daunted, but the thing about exchange is that there are 100 (or more) other people going through exactly the same thing and keen to make friends quickly. Plus, everybody loves our accent, you'll be fine.
