Great comment finally someone sees the big picture, the umpires in fact a re so damned well trained that anything they see a quarter of a millimetre or 10 kilometres they'll call it, it has changed the face of the game completely, but it is not those observant umpires that are to blame.
It is totally down to who ever started to rethink rules because of game changing by coaches, then the AFL wanted more goals so in came the arm dragging, once upon a time you were taught to distablise a players arms if you couldn't punch the ball away. Now itgives more frees to forwards and creates bigger scores they thought , well that didn't work, did it?

This new statue rule has opened a little bit of the game up but as the season went on it didn't improve the scopring at all, and the fifty penalties for that step wrong IS UNFAIR, the fifty for running through the kickers space , is an abomination on the game it is terrible and it is grossly unfair and the only thing I can ask is WHY???????? Do they need this trigger happy fifty rule, some pencil pushing ex footballer or administrator sat with other dolts re organising and destroying what our game is.

Then out of bounds deliberate or on the full even from a foot out off the line accidently bounces off a bloke's leg or ankle in a contest, really??
Who invented that garbage, the kicking is worse than it has ever been, the professional goal kicking forwards are numbered in a handful of people, now most players are comfortable to have an on the run hook shot because they become pertrified with fear if the have to have a deliberate shot from in front or on an angle and use a footbakllers drop punt? Hah even Jack Reiwolt a full on footballer knowledged sportsman missed a couple of hook shots , why bother Jack?

How bad is that, Jason or Plugger and all those great goal kickers did not need new rules to kick straight , but kickinmg when there is pressure is woeful, and that's a fact!
Out in the middle they deliver sometimes brilliant passes as team mates are running forward towards the ball it doesn't have to be exact? BUT get in front for a delibearate shot most can't, only a minority of players can on a regular basis.
A diluted competition and over expectation of champion players developing has caused this, because we have too many clubs and the standard is down. The rules fiddled to suit those that would not get a game in a 14 or 16 club competition. Even with the money the AFL has poured into GWS and GC17. NO SHOOTING THOSE CLUBS DOWN its about numbers of clubs not the entities but they have no history?
Now we may think we know why the game has been turned into rugby and basketball fouls but we still have to ask why?

One reason skills are dowm is the game is too fast, too many injuries!!!! And too many NON handballs blatant ones called but the " in tight" mini throws are let go, that is a total change for me, punch ball of other palm is a handpass, what if Teddy Whittens flick pass came back WELL IT ALREADY HAS?

We've lost the real footballers because the AFL wanted tons of money from TV rights and when North and Footscray said NO WE ARE NOT GOING TO gOLD coast and Western Sydney (WESTERN BULLDOGS????) dIMETRIOU SPAT THE DUMMY AND SAID i'LL MAKE TWO NEWBIES , AND THERE IS THE BASIS FOR THE RUINING OVER ADJUDICTAION AND A WICKED TRANSFORMATION AND POLITICALLY CORRECT SPORT THAT USED TO HAVE CHARACTERS AND ALLOWED REAL CONTACT AND CONTEST WITHOUT IT BECOMING 2 FREE SHOTS INSIDE THE KEY FOR A COUPLE OF BASKETS, HEY??????????????
That is footy now . And until people start seeing how things are changed anf unfair and why , the game as we know iot will be lost. AFL shoul;d be reviewed and massive changes are needed to give real football Aussie style people back their game!

You could probably find at least 5 a game....

Think there were 2 or 3 that directly affected the result of the game (geel v bris, geel v syd). Let's hope that doesn't happen again, although with Umpire numbers being incredibly low I don't see any accountability happening for further incompetence. The Umpire who screwed Brisbane with the Blicavs non-holding was umpiring at AFL level again the following week

In the last round- (IIRC the players but too bad if not)
Brayshaw ( I think) called for kicking it out on purpose. *ed call
Then the Geelong fella fisting it over the line when it was over the line and getting 50 against.
Ok it worked bloody well for us but both were horrible calls.
The first should have been a throw in, and the second made the first look good.
