I've got a feeling we could see more of these mid range players on lists being used as subs.
It just seems like a good way to use the rule to advantage.
With the reduced bench and rotations, players are cramping up towards the end of the third quarter. Bring on a fresh, decent player and they're going to rip it up.
Use it in a close game and it could be the difference.

Pettard last week came on in the last quater last and had the ball on a string.

Krak came on late in the 3rd, 12 touches 1 goal 1 behind.

Liam Anthony also came on in the 3rd that game, 14 touches, 5 marks and a goal.

I suppose a lot of coaches got killed by the Lower and Krak subs...I did :thumbsd:

The subs rule has ruined fantasy football.

Along with the bye's this year is a disaster.

Too much is now left to luck and chance rather than research and probability. You can do all the research in the world and pick up some nice players for a great price and have it all ruined by them being chosen as a sub. The thing that makes it worse is are they going to be a sub for just a game or two, or is it going to be a regular spot for that player?

Its a crap rule and its effect on supercoach has taken a good chunk of fun out of the game.

The sub has certainly thrown a level of luck into the game but to say the bye has ruined FF is so far off the mark it's not funny. This year the teams which put in the most effort/research into coming up with strategies to combat the bye will come out on top as opposed to the dude starting Pavlich, Buddy, SJ & Rioli in his forward line.

The bye will reward the best coaches and is the most interesting curve ball thrown into FF in general in years!

We should organise a boycott of fantasy footy until the AFL changes its stupid sub rule.

Nah that wont happen. :D:thumbsu:

was going to write a reply but this sums it up.

i'm very happy with the way i've worked around the bye and particularly the 3-team bye weekends. i haven't got one weekend with 2 premiums on the bench in the one position at the moment.

still had a tough round 2.... gonna finish around 2050 i think. not good.

From a fantasy perspective I think the subs and the byes add so much depth and complexity to the game and it's great :thumbsu:

And also this:thumbsu:

Lost by 16 points due to Krak's being sub. How in the world could we predict he would be when he played so well in round 1? Sub rule is going to affect SC far too much this year.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse....

COLLINGWOOD may roster games off for its star players this season to help combat the physically taxing new sub rule.

In a move mirroring cricket's one-day rotation policy, the premier may rest prime movers such as Dane Swan. The strategy also could affect leading Brownlow Medal fancies.

Hopefully if they go down this path they are transparent and the players in question miss the game outright rather than start as the sub. Imagine having Swan as (c) and he starts as the sub

It's something to take into consideration before making pies players captains against complete nuffy teams in the second half of the season. It shouldn't be an issue until after they have a second bye I think.

It just keeps getting better with the shizen sub rule: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...-rotation-policy/story-e6frf9jf-1226034354677

...let's hope Collingwood aren't too far ahead of everyone late in the season! And I reckon there will be more than one team thinking of things like this.

More players resting - more injuries - the bye is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the depth we'll need in our squads this season

At least this Friday With pies playing on Friday night we can see if Krak is sub or not

Not sure that makes things any easier Fozza, the decision between playing Richardson/Darling/Matera/Dixon or Krak for what may be 3/4 of the game where he racks up 120+, or maybe just 1/4 where he kicks four goals, gets a heap of contested possessions and racks up 70 points to beat the other options anyway is still a tough call IMO.

No difference from previous years with the Saints and Geelong sitting out stars in the last few rounds. You'll always want some trades left over for exactly that reason. This year it's Collingwood. Three years time it'll be the Gold Coast.

BIG difference to last year. Missing whole games because the season is so demanding, missing half games as a sub when your team is coasting for the same reason plus there sill be more weeks lost through injury (esp. if R1+2 are anything to go by). Throw the byes on top of that and four extra trades isn't going to get you far.
Bench depth of three may be need on more weeks than you think in the later half of the season. It's all well and good now but when everyone starts downgrading to more questionable rookies to keep the money coming in, some rounds will be a donut-fest.

Bloody hell the sub rule can go and get stuffed. I will cry if Dane Swan ends up being the sub and hes still my skipper.

Malthouse isn't saying that Swan will be a sub. He's saying that the sub rule is exhausting players more (which it was designed to do) and that as a result of the sub rule, he may have to rest Swan, etc. In other words, they'd be out for a whole game.

What, you don't think that'll (subbing Swan/Pendles) enter Malthouse's thinking if the Pies are up by 90 at half time against some lowly opposition as the season wears on (and they're secure in position 1 or 2 already)?
List management will be taken to new levels now.

Collingwood have become experts at list management. I can see a scenario where Swan/Pendles/Thomas/Didak maybe subs with the intention of resting and subbing on only if needed later in the season.
Welcome to the nightmare sc season...lol

I have decided that trades may be very important later in the year. It is going to be a balancing act.
It is making me wonder weather bringing Curnow/Libba are worth it for Swallow, Harris or Heppel. I might stick with chosen rookies instead of using these trades.

How's that different from benching your stars in the fourth quarter of a flogging? That's happened before many a time, and will happen again. This is nothing new.

I think the difference between benching someone during red time in the last quarter (where they can come back on if required) and subbing them at some point during the game (or starting them as a sub) is so apparent further explanation is not required.
And the end of the day this is all hypothetical ... But it's better to be thinking about the implications of these changes (particularly late in the season) now rather than treating this season as any other and getting caught with your pants down if/when things go pair-shaped.
