I've got a feeling this rule is going to mess with us more than we realise right now... it's already starting...

Easing players in to the premiership season (or back from injury) may be a way clubs handle their subs spot. What about Hodge? Chappy? Who else?
And that's not even to mention that rookie you've started in round 1, who's named on the bench. Sub! Not so much a cash cow now... and worse still robbing you of points!
What if finals-bound teams start resting midfielders through the subs spot as the season progresses?
You can do all the planning you like with your team but here you will have no control - and little or no heads-up. It's gonna suck, people. :mad:
I figured this is going to be the biggest annoyance for coaches all year therefore warranting a dedicated thread to vent.
 
Yep I'd say everyone will be stung by it at some point through the season. Whether one player gets subbed out with an injury niggle or one team is flying and wants to give a player a rest. Rookies no doubt will play some half games here and there.

Also some of the 'bits and pieces players' could start or get subbed off. David Hille likely to start as a sub too according to the Herald Sun..

Not that I have these players - and R1 you can do something about it (if the players are named). but beyond that it's sub-lotto.

Interesting to see what effect it has on players values when injured. For example player x goes down halfway through a match (loses half his score - approx) - misses 3 weeks then eased back in as a sub - plays another half a game and price plummets.

Hmm, might pay to look for durable players over highish risk high reward injury prone players aka Duffield over Broughton etc..
 
I'm looking at the Sub as an opportunity. They ease a player in who's had an injury in the pre-season through the sub. They score bugger all, drop in price and as soon as they string two games together where they are not on the bench you pick them up cheep. Hodge is reported to being considered eased back in. If he starts out with scores of 50 and plumits in price who isn't going to pick him up.

If one of your players gets subbed out you cop it. No telling who it will be. I suspect injury prone players maybe subbed out. If the team is winning by too much a premium might even get subbed out. How many cry if Swan gets subed out. :p

Yeah good call. Think Collingwood are going to rotate Swan to full forward and leave him 1 out..Well that's what Pendles said on HS
 
But it could also have huge bonuses, if Hodge is either...

a) Starting sub

or

b) Subbed off

... then his price will surely plummet dramatically come round 4. Once he builds up fitness he could be an ideal upgrade come round 6/7 where he has bottomed out quicker than any other premium. Same goes for Chappy.
 
It'll definitely Precent some above average bargains as the year goes on which is great (assuming you don't have the player who has become the bargain). But any good will be more than offset by the sub choices that take the game out of your control. In last season's terms it's like each side will suffer two injuries every week (ie 2 of the 22 won't have a full game score) :o
 
I think the nastiest thing about the sub rule is the teams only nominate the Sub before the match, not at team listing times. So any player named could be the sub. :eek:

It's the not knowing that will be the kicker. I'm sure once the season goes on we may get an idea of who is most likely to be the sub, but I'm sure so people are going to get a nasty surprise during the year.
 
You can pretty much guarantee that someone on the bench will be the sub, so that's at least some piece of mind. Once we're about five or six weeks in, you can probably have an even more educated guess for a few reasons:
- Some coaches are going to pick the same player repeatedly as the sub because of their versatility/impact play.
- Some coaches are always going to name the fourth player on their bench as the sub.
- There'll probably be a few other systems that various coaches are likely to use.

Unfortunately that doesn't help us that much come Week 1, but definitely concentrate on your rookies that are on the field and beware of any underdone guns on the bench because they're likely to be a sub.
 
Yeah - it's a bit of a worry... I'm sure patterns will develop from club to club, but even at this stage some coaches are saying they not even really sure how to best capitalise on the rule. Which means strategies may change as clubs learn from each other. It may well be as late as the second half of the year until we have at least a general fix on how all clubs will use it!

The best things to happen to SC are the byes (particularly the multi's), MPP and the sub rule.

This complexity will catch us all at some point but I'm guessing most of us who spend a lot of time on BF, tooserious, YSCC, footy utopia, fan footy club etc will all get caught out a hell of a lot less than Joe Hack who copies a great team off the web at the last minute or those who are unplanned and poorly prepared.

We will learn to master our own strategy around the sub rule as we have byes and MPP. At least I believe most of us will do better than the average SC player.

This year the real SC champions will stand out pretty quickly once the byes kick in and the trading commences. Bring on the mayhem!

A friend wrote some software to check the byes, my current team only has a problem in round 16, but trades will have happened before that. :thumbsu:
Badly timed injuries will also hurt, especially for with the byes. I know I have reserves for every round as well.

I think with the sub rule, they should of implemented the following.

Hypothetically, you have luke hodge and he is subbed off at 3/4 time, and you have Shaun Atley as an emergency.

You get hodges score till 3/4 time plus the score of Atley in his last quarter.

would have made things interesting.

Bring on GWS!!!!!
 
Does that mean if you have Atley you get Hodge's first 3/4s?

I do like a lot of the dynamics the bye is presenting this year... But I sure a hell hope the sub rule is a thing of the past in 2012!
 
Just caught the last half of a channel 9 Adelaide news sport report that said something about the crows considering Andy otten and Scott Stevens ideal candidates for the sub role :mad:

Seriously, Neil Craig is the new Laidley...screwin' with months of planning on the eve of SC season...gggrrrrrr....it was hard enough risk vs reward decision for Otten now.....this!
 
I don't know why teams would ever have their gun players start as a sub, whatever the papers say, it makes no sense.

Put them on at the start, play them till they're stuffed, THEN sub them out.

That way you won't run the risk of subbing of a fit player for a gun then copping an injury and being stuffed on then bench, and doubly stuffed if your gun can't run the game out.
 
Well starting on the ground with the intent to sub off is obviously preferable as there's a chance an injury to someone else will mean they stay on the ground. But if they start as the sub or come off for the sub the result is the same in terms of your SC team - they won't be scoring the points you paid for them to get.
...and for what it's worth I think there is a chance some of these guns (returning from injury) could start as the sub. Easing back form soft tissue injuries - gaining match fitness from longer term injuries - there are a few reasons ... and their impact with fresh legs in a tiring game would be massive (from a coaching perspective I can see them justifying it).
