Suburban Grounds........Ronnie and Jacko '82...

I used to enjoy travelling to opposition grounds when i was a teenager. The thrill of entering 'enemy territory'.

One of my favorite memories of Windy Hill was Ronnie Andrews and Jacko boxing on in the goalsquare at the Napier St end back in 1982. Some mug chucked half a can of VB at Jacko. Resulting in Jacko hurling it straight back into the crowd nearly de-capitating several spectators.

The 'Animal Enclosure' at Moorabbin was an umm....experience.
Victoria Park...nuff said.
Arden St. was tiny.
Western Oval..drinking at 'The Rising Sun' before/after a game.
Aaahhh....the good old days....

Yes, there were many grand adventures to be had!

I remember the Junction Oval too - the last time I went, Micky Conlan booted 10 goals and the Roys horsewhipped the Bullies by 70 points.

And getting there was half the fun. Riding the train to and from the grounds in a carriage packed with friends and foe. I remember coming back from Vic. Park and a drunken Pie supporter did a wee out of the door onto Hoddle Street as we crossed the bridge! Not the thing for an impressionistic young lad to see, but it was all part of the suburban pilgramage!

I had the pleasure of watching Jacko's bustle and bullshit every week when he played for South Freo. Always violent, always entertainment and some pretty good footy.

The bus trips from Waverley to the railway station, especially when pissed, were something else!! Then on top of that you had the train trip to Flinders St to contend with. It was okay providing your team won but boy if they lost, especially against Collingwood, was it a bloody long trip. Ah the memories - they just keep flooding back.
