Gram Parsons & Chris Hillman left The Byrds and formed Flying Burrito Brothers.
I saw Hillman play at the Fringe a few years back, he did Christine's Tune and the place went nuts.
On topic Pete Frame's rock n roll family trees are pretty much the definitive reference for this sort of thing.

At The Drive-In >> The Mars Volta was a great transition. They would building towards it on Relationship of Command, which is the best Omar/Cedric LP, and introduced some more proggy elements. Non-Zero Possibility signalled that, and would have sat perfectly an any TMV album. Otherwise a track like Quarantined foreshadowed where they would end up, but was still rooted heavily in punk.

They became pretty bloated after De-loused in the Comatorium though. That LP in and of itself requires a bit of patience, but they went on to make some really long but not overly interesting albums. Frances the Mute was the last great thing they've put out.
