Terrible news for the bloke. Feel for him. Pro footballer now has to spend the next year on the side lines. Must be hugely disappointing for him..on the cusp of another great season and cementing his place firmly in the best 18. Best wishes Suckling for your recovery and back in 2014!
 
Huge loss, especially given the shorter kick in time. He is a real weapon for us and will be missed immensely this year. Wouldn't be surprised if Clarko and Co havent made some adjustments to the game plan since he went down. Hopefully his surgery goes well and he can get back out there as soon as possible. Isn't this always the case... guy looks like he's about to have an All-Australian-esque year with his best pre-season ever, only to f*** his knee days before the start of the season.

I know people will want to blame the NAB cup or some other phenomena on this injury but it's just bad luck plain and simple. He would have as easily done it in a intra-club match or in a practice match.
 
Bad news for you guys, and us Sydney supporters feel your pain having lost AJ for the season. Thankfully both are young players and have a lot of time on their side so there should be no need to rush the recovery. I hope Johnson goes for the regular surgery intead of LARS, just as Suckling as opted to do.

Yeah doing down like that in an uncontested situation is going to be a huge barrier to overcome mentally, with contact and just running in general. I know form personal experiences dont worry ;) wish the great lad all the best and speedy recovery. Hopefully this is the first and only time.
 
Sometimes football can tear your heart out.

We as supporters feel the like shit about it, so I can only imagine how Suckers feels. :thumbsdown:

In Suckling's case, when he started a scoring chain from defence, the Hawks scored from one in every four forays, the most of any regular defender in the competition. When Suckling intercepted the ball, the Hawks scored in every third foray, which was the most of any player from intercepts.

SECOND at the club for inside 50s/rebound 50s combined.

FIRST in rebound 50s.

TWENTY-THIRD in the AFL for metres gained.

THIRD for ball retention of the top 50 players in metres gained.

SECOND most goals at the Hawks outside 50m.

Unfortunately that will include most opposition coaches and negating forwards too. This will be the compound loss that happens with Suckers doing his knee. Birch will need to shake the tag he will be getting unless he shoves up to the wing and Burgers and Gibson taking the rebounding duties.

The problem has now moved beyond the way our players are prepared (or should I say underprepared ) and the decision making of the coaches and the football department, their thinking hasnt changed so we keep getting these horrible results every year, . The real problem now lies with the board , the buck stops with them , if they cant see what is happening to our team then we are in real trouble, they need to make the changes that the coaches and the football department will not. We will give it a good crack again this year but will ultimately come up just short again with 5 or 6 of our best players sitting in the stands whislt our less talented opposition will be close to full strength.

Agreed.. I am backing Clarko to change a few things in the game plan to offset his loss...

If we had half our team going down with soft tissue injuries like the Bombers did last year, then I'd be open to discussing the idea. But structural accidents such as what happened to Suckling, WhiteX etc are just part of footy unfortunately and you have to suck it up and hope you get lucky. The Pies lost a number of players last year to knee injuries, it happens and it sucks.

FFS, how the F*** can one blame an ACL especially with no contact on anything other than bad luck. Looking at the incident he could have disolacted his shoulder wiping his arse he was that unlucky.
 
I know Burgers already plays a semi permanent role down back, but can see Clarko playing he, Hodge and Mitchell resting/ rotating off Half Back in order to cover Suckers. There is never going to be a direct replacement for him, however we can still plug the gap by other means, and do it well.
 
Knees are a part of footy. I did my knee training about 12 years ago and the first thing everyone asked me was "do it at footy?” Now that would be a reasonable assessment if I was playing footy at the time. I think that shows how commonly they are associated with this great sport. Have a look at

To me the video shows how little conditioning etc have to do with these types of injuries. In some cases muscle development can have something to do with the cause and prevention of knee injuries occurring but when fatigue and exertion kick in, there is little that can be done to stop it.

Notice how many knee injuries happen with a change of direction, awkward landing or with external force being applied. The video should point out why that is the case and that it has not much to do with our conditioning program. The body has a weak point and it is in our knees and our sport (along with others like basketball, netball etc) has many common actions that can cause serious knee injury.

As for Suckers, he will leave a huge hole in our defensive structure. Him being out will mean that teams will be able to focus on Birchall / Goo all the more. If we are to structure up in a similar way we will need someone who has to be accounted for to replace Suckling. Maybe Burgers will go back there. Good user, thumping kick, play maker (albeit in a different way to suckers) and a cool head. He has a similar limitation to Sucker's defensively but only because of his titanic-esque turning circle (ironically because of his own knee issues).
Or maybe we will try to pull a rabblit out of the hat and throw someone in there that other clubs are not looking for and would not play a ahrd tag on. Maybe Hill as a rebounding half back?? who knows
 
That's terrible news, hope he goes well with recovery. Lots of sympathy - I remember how us Eagles supporters felt when we saw the footage of Le Cras going down on the training field. Wouldn't wish it on anyone (well, maybe Kim Jong-Eun could do with one...)
 
He will be a huge loss, the article about him today just shows that, anyone who thinks he isn't a big loss because he is supposedly not as tough as some other players or not great 1 on 1 have no idea. He is so creative and now with him out, we lose our best field kick in the team, players like Birchall, Guerra and Burgoyne have to step up even more and we are now down another quick run and carry player (after losing young and also whitey out for half the season). I'm also even more worried now if we are playing all 4 of Lake, Schoey, Stratton and Gibbo in the team. Hopefully Hill/Simpkin and these sort of players can really step up for us!
