So.. Suckling ruptured his ACL around the 10th of March. Contrary to popular belief, ACL's take about 6 months to recover from not 12. People often believe 12 because our football season only goes for 6 months of the year.

A1. Initially, the patient is non weight bearing for 2 weeks. The patient can then wean off of the crutches when they can walk without a limp between weeks 2-6. Slow rehab will be allowed at this time while the bone is still healing in the tunnels. Activities are usually increased from weeks 7 through 12. Around week 12, some patients return to jogging. Patients may then return to sports at 5 through 7 months if they pass functional and strength testing.

A little different..

Rehabilitation for a reconstructed ACL will be conducted under the direction of an orthopedic surgeon and the supervision of a physiotherapist. A number of rehabilitation program schedules exist however more recent programs commence with a schedule of protected mobilisation, followed by strengthening activities and ultimately progress to functional exercises. This rehabilitation usually takes between six and nine months.

Now usually if you do an ACL in the season, you're gone for the season, but Matthew did his in a preseason game.
Depending on how well his rehab is going, lets say his rehab takes a bare minimum of six months. And the recovery time should be from when he went in for surgery but nevertheless

March 10 + 6 months = September 10

COULD IT BE POSSIBLE :D

Yeh not going to happen

With absolute all due respect, have you ever done an ACL? Genuine question. I've have, twice unfortunately. Obviously don't have anywhere near the same level of rehabilitation resources in terms of fitness coaches, physiotherapy etc as an AFL player would, but the principles behind every patella/4 strain reconstruction are the same.

I cannot understate for a moment the level of physical mass and muscle that the body shreds off the quad/hip area after a ruptured cruciate. The sheer level of conditioning work and strength exercises required to put this back on cannot be understated again. A 6 month recovery is most certainly attainable, and perhaps even more and more common with the quality of today's surgery/recovery techniques. However, there is a massive difference in being able to fully run/train etc 6 months after a reco, versus being able to effectively return to AFL level football.

The explosive takes offs and stops, the sharp twists/body movements, accelerating to a sprint etc. These can only be done without pain or risk of further damage once a significant level of conditioning has been achieved and once the tissues inside the knee have accepted the graft. And in September obviously is finals time, it would be an extraordinary risk to throw him straight back in. Obviously I haven't seen what type of condition he is in, but the risk of a re-injury, or injury to his 'good knee' (as a result of trying to overcompensate for weakness in the recovering knee) is far, far too high and I would be amazed if the club rushes him back into the fold. As a duty of care to Suckling's long term career, I just cannot see it happening.

Hopefully he is coming along beautifully and with the extra few months of pre-season, would be fantastic to see him dominate in 2014 and beyond :thumbsu:

wonder if they will be conservative with Woody again this time around and keep him away from the competitive stuff this season or throw him to the wolves...

I reckon given he's done it twice they might let him play a bit at Box Hill to lift his spirits before going in to pre-season.

On Suckling, no way he'd play this year, but the timing he did it was good as he can still have a big pre-season to try to break in next year.

Nope. Other than a couple of ongoing ones which didnt require surgery, I've pretty lucky with injuries, so I'm sorry to hear about yours.

I didn't actually expect any 'yes's in response to 'Could it be possible', but I did think I may as well clutch some straws and try my luck. Apologies if you found it disrespectful to how hard the injury is to come back from

No problem at all, no offense taken whatsoever :thumbsu:

They're very nasty injuries and always makes my stomach turn everytime I see a player go down with one. Suckling is still quite young and hopefully has the best part of 8-10 years left of his career to come. So making sure his recovery is correct is very much in his and the club's best interests.

Plus there's the little issue of how does he get back into our team? We're going pretty nicely at the moment ;)

Gee, I miss those long, raking kicks out of the backline.
And the little dinky ones

Such a pleasure to see such great kicking - hope he comes back better than ever!

This I totally agree with and the Hawks are planning to do it this way.

No, I don't think Suckling will play this year, it would be too soon. But Woodward might get a few games, probably at Box Hill, the club have said as much.

Can I put in a request that when old injury threads are resurrected that the title is modified to prevent possible heart attacks
