I know he was an assistant coach for a Premiership winning team but I don't rate him at all, seems like a bit of a neaderthal. Would have much preferred Watters.

Not esctatic with the news but I will give him a chance, he is a Freo boy afterall.

My take is WCE gave Burns the 2IC job to keep him away from Bucks and the Pies and Suma was sick of being taken for granted and jumped.
His CV reads as good, if not better than any assistant coach in the league.
2 x Premiership player; 11 years coaching at elite AFL level; Premiership midfield coach 05, 06. Then turned a dysfunctional forward line including lynch, kennedy and Nickoski into the top three forward lines in the AFL with the addition of Darling an EBERT!

Exactly. By round 10 if Freo are 4-6 the knives will come out.

Having said that though, the Dockers will now win both derbies in 2012. Sumich obviously knows every intricacy of the Eagles, and it will be a massive advantage. Just like Bomber Thompson being an assistant coach for Essendon this year, and surprise surprise Essendon beat Geelong...

Not thrilled with this news to say the least.

I can imagine all the usual suspects working themselves into a lather over this. Wonder if they're gonna organise a protest march again..
 
Not conflicting feelings at all here. If he becomes our forward coach then I'm all in favour. It is an area where we have a clear need, and we're getting someone with a proven track record in that field of expertise, both as a player and as a coach. I don't care where he comes from, I'm as happy as a pig in shit.
 
The problem with Suma it is how he says it not what he says. I am willing to give him a go, despite my initial reaction.

My first reaction having read this news via twitter was What the Hell and Oh No!

Now I've had a chance to think, please, oh please, keep Sumich away from press conferences
 
It is a Fyfe reference. I am hoping he goes on to win the Brownlow, I have a 13 jumper in my closet with his signature on it. Not that I would sell it anyway.
 
My initial reaction was;


However, I'm quite happy to embrace the change and give the man a chance. On paper Sumich has the cred, regardless of how you view the man personally. There is quite the paradigm shift happening within the Footy Department at FFC. It's exciting times so lets see where it takes us. I'm sure he is under no illusions as is RL and the Steve's about what's expected and the result if things don't work out.

So, another local wog linking up at FFC. No real shock is it, really...

To all concerned at Fremantle football club,

I am in shock. At first I thought it was a practical joke, but now that reality has set in, I am just sad and very angry at the stupidity.

Last night my husband renewed our membership for 2012. Oh what a shame!

Had we had the news of the appointment of the assistant coach being Peter Sumich you would NOT have received it.

No doubt we will settle down to being the laughing stock of all of the football community, all over Australia.

It has been hard enough holding our heads up with the other team in town with their arrogant put-downs etc., they now have every reason to call us “dorkers”. This has to be the most stupid appointment of all.

I thought our coaches were supposed to support Fremantle Football Club, but those concerned with the appointment of Peter Sumich are pretenders and have “West Coast Eagles” at heart and are working against the Dockers in the cleverest of ways.
Didn’t it occur to anyone at Fremantle, the reasons why he hadn’t ever been appointed anywhere else before? While he may be a “nice guy” he is just unable to communicate in public or football circles and as for being a coach, the Eagles must be laughing all the way at the opening to get a real coach in his place!

Oh, while time will tell, I am so afraid for all concerned with the club, and my heartfelt sympathy to all of the players and members.

Melodrama at its best. They carry on like this every time anything at the club changes.
 
Suma's first master move will be to trade Fyfe, Mundy and Barlow to the Eagles for a drumstick and some hot chips. Go Suma! :D
 
I love how completely out of touch some of those Dockerlanders are with outsiders' perceptions of us.

Apparently we used to be respected despite losing every week, wearing the most maligned jumper in the AFL and having a coach who came across as barely literate in his press conferences.

But once we switched to a leaner, sleeker jumper and started ruthlessly headhunting proven coaches we apparently became the laughing stock of Australia.

Maybe if they ever ventured out of their little cocooned site and interacted with fans from other clubs they would realise how off-base their perceptions are. As it stands Dockerlanders are the internet equivalent of those 66% of Americans who don't even own a passport.

Not sure I agree with your comments on the jumper, the old jumper was much better, but lets not start that discussion again.

They just let their preconceived ideas/thoughts dictate any comments. We pulled off a great move with Lyon and are looking to consolidate it with further signings. Hats off to that.

Not talking about our own opinions in this case though, rather the fact that our old jumper drew far more scorn from outsiders than our new one.

The good thing is that now we are becoming a club that experienced coaches want to come to.
