A disappointing end to our season, but, overall a real step in the right direction.

So many positives.
We were the 5th best defence.
Collins again a rock and AA squad nominee. Noble and Rioli were huge additions and really transformed the team. Jeffrey showed he is an AFL level player.

We did this whilst playing without our second best defender the whole year - our second and third tall defenders are both 21 years old - any other teams doing that with young players in key positions - I don't think so. A mid season KPD played 8 games (also 21 years old).

We were the 4th highest scoring team.

King kicked 71 goals a club record
Long kicked 45 goals (can you even comprehend this at the start of 2024) and made the AA squad
Humphrey continued his progression and showed he can win games for us.

We did this whilst playing 2 x 19-20 year old key forwards for 37 combined games and a barren small forward department. Read really came on and Walter showed glimpses. Both have huge upside, but things to work on for sure.

Our midfield was the engine that drove us

Anderson AA, Rowell AA

Miller a great year coming back from injury affected 2024. Miller, Humphrey, Graham are going to be an excellent mid-fwd rotation. Can include Flanders if he gets his back right and sticks around.

Witts a monster. Moyle should get more opportunities next year. Surely Witts gets rested a bit more frequently.

Overall
We won a bloody interstate final. Amazing experience for the guys and you can see how the positivity around this will spur them on into next year - and to encourage people to stay and attract others.

We actually stayed pretty healthy. Ballard knee was unavoidable. Graham's shoulder was unavoidable. Flanders back was troublesome. But we hardly missed 90% of our best team throughout the year.

Some indifferent themes
We let teams kick multiple goals in a row against us on a number of occasions. Threw away some great positions to win.
If we have the game on 'our terms' we look very dangerous. But we don't seem to be able to win through other avenues if our style gets interrupted. To win a flag you have to be better than that.

A bit disappointing that Rogers, Lombard, Graham, Moyle didn't get more game time this year. Either through injury, form or selection reasons. For me, Moyle in particular. Witts another year older. We know that Moyle is a great VFL ruckman, but is he a decent AFL ruckman.. not quite sure. Wish we found that out before our stars are in their prime so we can pivot if needed. For Rogers - for a team who has limited small forward - you wish he got a few more games. Only kicked 1 goal in his 7 VFL games - obviously playing more mid. But is he someone that can come in and kick goals for us??

I am ok with Mac's year. He had to play a role that probably doesn't suit his best attributes and he lead the league in spoils. I think he showed increasing levels of maturity as the year rolled on. But, we didn't really see the best of him. Where was that guy who took intercept marks for fun last year. Wish we saw this a bit more. Didn't take a huge leap like I thought he might.

Negatives
I only saw 2 games live this year (both losses to Brisbane)
Not that many others!

I'll probably do a deep dive into some of the stats players and team at some point.

Hoping everyone can put in their thoughts about the season as a whole.

The good

Rowell and Anderson having amazing AA years
Anderson much better leader than I expected
Significant improvement from Humphrey
Great contribution from Long
Collins a brick wall
Uwland developing very nicely
Great recruitment in Rioli and Noble
Wins against Lions, Collingwood, Adelaide
Finally making finals
Getting a finals win (away too)

Should see a bump in crowds and memberships next year
Success attracts free agents and trades (Elliot? Another KPD? Curnow? Another small forward)

The Bad

Losses against Richmond and Port (Should hopefully not happen again next year with more development and synergy)
When the forward line is not performing well, it is extremely poor (Tried 3 talls for way too long imo)
Need to learn how to counter the tag on Rowell/Anderson (Should be Davies department)
Ainsworth and Buderick too a lesser degree
Still feels impossible to beat the Giants

Mac Andrew B+
Had some excellent games, and some really poor ones, one of each in our finals. Easy to forget how young he is and focus on his salary but I'm happy with Mac and still comfortable with his contract. Another preseason will do him well

John Noble B
Consistent and gave some run out of defence. Few clangers but defensively better than i expected. He's quite short but has a good jump to get a fist in and interupt a mark, awful in the semi and considering why he wanted to leave Collingwood, that will hurt i assume

Sam Flanders D
injured all year but he's still out there. So might be harsh but it wasn't a passable year. Needs to play midfield, even wing but isn't a forward.

Jed Walter B-
I like Jed, had some poor games when he went missing but at his age and position I'm still excited from what he's shown

Alex Davies D
Broke into the team, had a couple of good games but didn't show enough, consistently. I think he is a role player, could tag inside mids like Dunkley did to Rowell but too fumbly and unsure with ball in hand

Alex Sexton D
Old and not in the side

Nick Holman D
Old and not in the side

Brayden Fiorini C-
Slow to move the ball on, doesn't step up when Rowell and Anderson are down, bit of a downhill skier. He contributes, kind of but rides their coattails a bit.

Ben Ainsworth D
Isn't a finisher, works hard but no flow to his game. Mark and chip, didn't have a good year at all

Charlie Ballard NA
We all seen how Riley Thilthorpe returned after a year off, let's see what Charlie's looking like round 1

Touk Miller B+
Very good year, it's not the best we've seen of Touk but he's not playing that same position either.

Elliott Himmelberg NA

Lachie Weller D
Not getting that overlap run out of him, doesn't look like he trusts his kick anymore. Still quick but I don't know where his best position is. Some of the young fellas should be eyeing his spot.

Noah Anderson A+
Gun, great captain, even better than i thought his ceiling was. Needs to get involved mode when Rowell is tagged out of it

Thomas Berry NA

Daniel Rioli B
Good player, didn't rack it up, wasn't really spoken about in terms of AA squad, think he's got more in him

Matt Rowell A+
No Rowell, no GC. Would have been a disaster if he didn't sign.

Bailey Humphrey B
Huge step in the right direction, wins crucial 1 on 1s. He needs to look at what Cam Rayner did to us and impose his will like that. If he finds another 10 goals in a season or becomes a midfielder remains to be seen but a star on the rise.

Ethan Read C
So young to be playing kpf and ruck, took some good marks around the ground, just needs a couple more big preseasons before he can start to dominate

Ned Moyle C
Must be frustrated in the VFL, Didn't set the world on fire with his limited opportunities. Seems a terrific teammate

Ben Long A
He loves to hurt blokes, looks hard af. Leads up, good overhead, good on the ground, been our best trade since Witts

Sean Lemmens NA

David Swallow C
So happy he got his moment, feel sad that the club let him down and took us this long to make finals but i hope he watches on with pride.

Sam Collins A
In the top 5 key defenders in the league, played his role superbly.

Will Graham C
One to watch next year, I feel like he is one player who can breakout if his body is right

Wil Powell C+
Inconsistent I thought, game of his life in the Elimination Final but thought he probably took a step backwards this year. But what do I know, could be playing a team role that I don't see.

Jarrod Witts A
Gobsmacked by how good and consistent he was. Rowell is going to miss him one day.

Jake Rogers C+
I thought he was really exciting before he got injured, his speed and disposal looked like weaponals we don't have. Sometimes he spends it before he has it and is going too quick but can't wait to see him in 2026

Leonardo Lombard NA

Cooper Bell NA

Bodhi Uwland B+
Probably our second most reliable defender, annoyingly so because I think he'd be an amazing midfielder. His kicking was a little suspect at time, the switch in the semi being 1 example.

Sam Clohesy C+
I think it's one of the hardest positions to look good in, but we look better when he's on the wing

Ben King A
Goals delux but struggles against the absolute elite defenders. One of his best games was the EF where he didn't kick any goals but influenced the game.

Connor Budarick D
Too small to play anywhere else except fwd in the afl but isn't a natural fwd. Another square peg round hole in our forward line

Zak Evans NA

Max Knobel NA

Lloyd Johnston NA

Lachlan Gulbin NA

Joel Jeffrey B-
Breakout year, If Rioli isn't bringing it out of defence, I'd want it to be this guy. Our transition game is one of the worst in the AFL so we still need to lift in this area but JJ was solid

Malcolm Rosas D
Never really got a run at it, I think he'll go alright at another club, but like Mabior

Asher Eastham NA

Ben Jepson NA

Caleb Lewis NA

Caleb Graham GOAT

Oscar Adams D
Not sold he is AFL quality, but we will see, needs a preseason

Jy Farrar D
Loveable but apart from his first game pretty disappointing

Season
SUCCESS

Good
Making finals and wining a game. Great to watch fans, players, staff euphoria.
Dream goal by Swallow.
Anderson and Rowell in AA team. They still had some average games but what an effort.
Rowell Brownlow winner.
Captain looking good.
Jeffrey went one level up (he did have a couple of stinkers).
4th for offence and 5th for defence is fantastic effort and promising for future.
King’s goals total.
Team was more consistent.

Bad
Missing top 4. It was a great opportunity.
Semifinal looked like one game too much for us both physically and emotionally for most players after Perth magic.

Dimma
He appears to be a fantastic motivator, instilled belief into players but his decisions regarding line-ups, strategies, adjustments raise questions for me. He again overloaded Anderson and Rowell in the middle, still did not expand middle rotations. It tires them up. Not adjusting quickly during the game, no tagging.

Game style
We started the season on fire with high level of rebound, keeping ball forward, causing turnovers. As season progressed and teams adjusted we turned to stoppage or bust. A bit worry.

New players
Both Noble and Rioli contributed well. They brought experience, confidence. Did they exceed my expectation? No. Noble’s clangers, a lot of them from kicks in did not impress me. Limit them and he is great. Both had injuries in pre-season so hopefully they will have a full run next year.

Players performance
Besides Anderson, Rowell, Jeffrey, King my best players list include also Miller, Witts, Long, Collins.

Players like Humphrey, Uwland, Powell, Andrew, Noble, Rioli had some great games but not consistent enough, some poor games too.

Trade
Looking to add experience.
So far reported interest in Curnow, Petracca, Elliot, JUH. None likely?
If Curnow would join us it raises a question about Walter future. Do we take the risk now over sustained success long-term approach?
Flanders probably leaving. He was very disappointing with no pre-season. Dimma saying he should not play half of games raised an eyebrow. So why did he play? No minutes in the middle due to back issue? Basically he did not tackle.
Probably/possibly leaving Fiorini, Budarick, Rosas.
Is Elliot coming? Nah, just using us.
JUH? By his own admission he had suicidal tendencies. Not an easy case. Worth to try with specific conditions in contract?
If we bring nobody (looking likely right now), I would keep Flanders for one more year. No point replacing mature depth with kids.

Draft
Do we get only Uwland and Patterson or also Addinsall, Coulson, Murray?

Future
Who can we get to improve list?
Will Walter be still with us (yes)? Can Read and Walter progress again and can we win it with them in 2026-27?
Will finally Moyle get more opportunities despite Witts having his best season? With expected 5 players on the bench I suspect so.
How will Ballard inclusion change defensive line? Who will move out? Will it give more flexibility to Mac?
Can Graham get a clean run and will he spend significant minutes in the middle together with Humphrey?
Can Rogers and Lombard become best 23?
Can Zeke Uwland and Patterson get games?
Who will be our wings? Clohesy and Weller is fine with me. Or do we see Powell, Zeke Uwland there too?
Do we get a couple of experienced coaches to assist Dimma and keep him in check? Probably not.
