Agree with point 2, but more importantly I think the experienced midfield players and McLaughlin need to play better. If they can work together and build trust in the team by actually hitting some of their team mates with passes it will help the academy kids and everyone else to play better. Unfortunately their skills have been ordinary for years and is unlikely to change, and when they get so much of the ball it is damaging. You see half hearted leads all the time because players are not confident the ball is going to go anywhere near them.Yep, they did the right thing by Dupay.
They must have their eye on some late round talent that they really want a list spot for since not having Dupay will make us worse next year.
Anyway, two positive things to look for:
- We will set the record for the youngest selected team and list in AFLW history and fair dinkum that might never get broken.
- Next year will be super fascinating. We might be rubbish but it will be interesting. Really really need some of the 2nd and 3rd year academy girls to play better.

Yep, not trying to bash her, she gets the ball a lot and mostly baffles the opposition. But unfortunately her team mates also seem to have no idea what she is going to do with the ball and her turn over rate is terrible. Just saying it will help her team mates massively if there was more understanding between them and composure from McLaughlin to hit them. Jaz Garner is all Australian too and look at how she uses it…massive difference.Niamh is an All Australian

Do we really believe she was going to give up the opportunity to play with her best friend? I'm sure there were several clubs in Melbourne that tempted her, but in the end I believe she was always going to choose us and play with her bestie Havana Harris. This annoyed me a little bit
This is what she said. I guess with all her injuries it played on her mind if somewhere fresh would be better.Do we really believe she was going to give up the opportunity to play with her best friend? I'm sure there were several clubs in Melbourne that tempted her, but in the end I believe she was always going to choose us and play with her bestie Havana Harris.
But in a stunning admission, the Palm Beach Currumbin junior has revealed that she almost didn’t pledge her allegiance to the Suns, with rival clubs aware that she was desperate to get back on the park this season.
“I nearly didn’t, to be honest with you,” Usher said.
“There were three minutes left before the cut-off when I decided to sign it.
“I showed them my commitment, but I’m definitely not afraid to go anywhere, and they know that as well.
“At the end of the day, it’s what’s best for me and my football career. If that’s not at home, then that’s not at home.”
Fair enough. I guess we'll never actually know if there is any truth to it, but I think what it may do is create a sense of urgency for us to get our act together in terms of the AFLW program because it would be a terrible outcome to lose a player of Usher's quality. Let's not forget, we also convinced Sunny Lappin to stay on the GC and she would've had all kinds of opportunities thrown at her by Carlton and St Kilda. I suppose the idea of not wasting all this talent currently being produced on the Gold Coast is a big part of the reason we've turfed out Fiona Sessarago and replaced her with Erin Philips. No more time for complacency with our mens' or women's programs! This is what she said. I guess with all her injuries it played on her mind if somewhere fresh would be better.
I believe with 2 extra list spots as concession Suns list will be 32. We let go 9 players and brought in Hatchard. In tomorrow's draft we will probably bring in at least 6 academy kids.Fair enough. Heading into the Trade Period, which is closely followed by the Telstra AFLW Draft this coming Monday night, SUNS AFLW Recruitment Officer Thomas Waldron told AFL.com.au that the club’s strategy was centred around placing itself in a strong draft position whilst complementing a young cohort with experienced players.
It required making tough decisions on several players, with the ability to exchange future picks for the first time in the AFLW playing a role as well.
"We plan a long way in advance to do things like this. This draft crop has obviously been coming through for three, four years. We've had our eye on it, plus we've given up a full suite of picks next year," Waldron said.
"We've also had to make some tough decisions on several great servants of our club, who have done great things for our footy club and they're all quality players. We've had to do a fair bit of work to be in the position we are in heading into the draft.
“When a player of Anne's capability and stature in the game became available, we did everything we could to make it happen. So we are pretty excited to have her join our footy club, and we think she'll be able to play a key role in helping our young squad.”
Would you use some of the use a couple extra list spots on free agents post the draft? Maybe mature agers?I believe with 2 extra list spots as concession Suns list will be 32. We let go 9 players and brought in Hatchard. In tomorrow's draft we will probably bring in at least 6 academy kids.
I looked at the list. At present, we got 9 players 20 years old or younger. Seven of them are 18 or 19. So with tomorrow's draftees we will have 13 players 18-19 and 2 players 20. Essentially, half of the list.
Just imagine if we get some injuries (as we always do).
So here is my prediction to temper your unbridled optimism. We will be a basket case for min next 2 years (and probably longer) with all those kids. As a result more players will probably leave. Sorry![]()
Possibly, but it does look like most experts predict we will draft min 6 academy kids, or even more. Probably 8 spots available before tomorrow if I counted correctly.Would you use some of the use a couple extra list spots on free agents post the draft? Maybe mature agers?
Pies did that before the trade period with a couple ex netballers, someone on carlton's list and a gaelic girl.
Yeah, and apparently possibly another 3.Looking at HS/Code sports phantom draft:
6 bids in the top 20
I'm certainly aware of the fact that we're at the beginning of a list rebuilding phase and that's going to take time. I'm not expecting finals in 2026 or anything like that. Although I am interested to see what is possible with a young list that's full of high end draft picks.I believe with 2 extra list spots as concession Suns list will be 32. Yeah, I personally don’t think going all youth is the way.The men’s team 2011-2024 should give you an idea
