Quite incredible really.... a team including 11 AFL listed players (five were former first-round picks) managed to score 4 points for an entire game of football.

Gold Coast are in all sorts..... Just another low point in the ultimately slow demise of the club. Something needs to be done, but what? Obviously their success is good for the league as a whole but it just isn't working.

No better way to describe the club than a frog in water being slowly brought to boil.

Not exactly the Who’s-Who of AFL listed players though was it?...and the opposition had 19 listed players?..

Pretty low grade league really - not sure how much it means at all.

Peter Wright, Josh Schoenfeld, Will Brodie, Jacob Dawson, Jacob Heron, Josh Jaska, Kade Kolodjashnij, Wil Powell, Jack Scrimshaw, Max Spencer & Mackenzie Willis.

You would expect a bit better than 4 points from 4 quarters from a team with the above playing..... 5 x 1st round picks in that bunch.

No it isn't, this is a competition and they are our enemies. I don't want them contending at the same time and taking premierships off my club. I want to beat them every time we play them, take 4 points and then take their players in off-season.

Mmmm

I think your have to understand the NEAFL. It's different to the VFL, WAFL or SANFL in that the AFL clubs use it as a development league. Our previous NEAFL coach Brett Hand said openly the goal of our NEAFL team is not to win the NEAFL, it's to develop AFL players.
I don't know the Suns particular issues today but previously they've complained that have to use fill in players from clubs like Aspley, and end up with the bottom of their list.
We use academy kids a lot but with the championships on that restricts availability.
We flew a guy from the Broken Hill local league down to play NEAFL today as well.

Bottom line is don't read too much into NEAFL or the fact the Suns had 11 listed players today. The other 11 could have been anything, and likely were.

well, it is the NEAFL for starters, so they arent getting the best experience, and then came up against brisbane (another AFL listed team). Itd be more concerning if they were taking on a stand-alone team with no AFL or ex-afl listed players

Same goes for our SANFL side. Regularly gets flogged but they teach the players our AFL game plan so they can slot right in.
Yeah but I think your SANFL side probably prefers to win. I'm willing to bet it carries listed players not on the Crows list as well. NEAFL reserves teams dont.

We usually play anyone running up to speed for the AFF in the midfield, so they can get some action. We had Matt Buntine, a specialist defender, coming back from injury and he got more than 40 possessions today. I only saw part of the game, NEAFLgames are curtain raisers at Spotless, but he was running through the midfield for the part I did see.

One myth I do not get is how GC success is good for the league. Who gives a shot about an extra what- 5k extra at the game. It doesn't improve footy as a product. Just means you lose more against them

I get that the goal isn't necessarily to win the NEAFL but do players develop playing in teams that go goalless?

It’s probably not a good standard of league to develop in full stop. Shows the benefits of a national reserves/2nd tier comp.

If only the prospect of that didn’t scare the hell out of the WAFL and the SANFL.

I have been saying it for years.
Blaze, Bears, United, Titans.....Suns .

The Gold Coast is an absolute graveyard for professional sporting teams. The AFL made a huge mistake.

Carrying on is just a concord fallacy. The afl would be wise to admit their mistake and pack up shop. The money spent up until now is sunk. There is no point wasting more money.

Once upon a time the Bears and Swans played VFL/AFL reserves.

I think the NEAFL is a better option than the QAFL/SFL but yeah the standard isn't great. I would expect the AFL backed clubs to dominate it, though.

At least 4 of them are former top 10 draft picks.

Clayton was such a terrible recruiter

Happens in other state leagues. Peel alignment side winning two flags was an accumulation of factors but Subiaco and others will regularly dominate AFL alignment clubs depending on their development cycle.

Think Subiaco would probably be a solid chance to beat Suns, Essendon, Carlton, StKilda and Brisbane.

2nd tier comps arent reliable iindicators of AFL success.
