THE Gold Coast Suns have begun turning over their list by offloading five players.

The Suns have shed 170 games of AFL experience by delisting senior players Jarrad Grant (95 games), Mitch Hallahan (26) and rookies Keegan Brooksby (14), Ryan Davis (35) and Cameron Loersch (0).

“On behalf of everyone involved with the Gold Coast Suns, we want to commend the players for the contributions they have made to the club,” Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft said.

“We wish them every success and all the very best for the future.”

Three of the players delisted were given second chances by the Suns in recent seasons with Grant (Western Bulldogs), Hallahan (Hawthorn) and Davis (West Coast) all briefly reviving their careers in Queensland.

The Suns will have more list lodgements in the next two months and the futures of off-contracted players Brandon Matera, Trent McKenzie, Michael Rischitelli, Matt Shaw and Jesse Lonergan are still uncertain, though most will have value at the trade table.

On the coaching front, Gold Coast’s assistants could find out as early as today if they are following Rodney Eade out of the door at the Suns.

D-Day looms for the coaches who have been called in to meet with Suns CEO Mark Evans individually today as the club edges closer to finalising its review of the football department.

Evans is expected to detail the position of each coach going forward but may provide a final update to them when he delivers his full findings of the review to the board later this month.

The Suns may also choose to wait until they appoint a new head coach before making any decision in order to give Eade’s successor the chance to choose who he wants to keep, if any.

Suns assistants Dean Solomon, Matthew Primus, Ashley Prescott, Andy Lovell, Melbourne-based Brett Munro, Matthew Lappin, Aaron Rogers and NEAFL coach Stephen Daniel are all off contract at the end of the season.

Development coach Nick Malceski is contracted until the end of 2018.

Some of the current Suns assistants have been sounded out for coaching positions with Victorian Football League clubs.

Multiple are also understood to be considered suitable for the vacant Southport Sharks NEAFL head coaching position made available after former Suns AFL player Nathan Bock decided to stand down.

Evans has already hinted at the likelihood that current interim head coach Solomon, who has also been offered a job at GWS, would likely be re-signed.

The group were all free to begin talks with potential new employers if the Suns weren’t able to offer them new deals by August 1.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast have hosed down speculation that retiring Hawthorn great Luke Hodge is considering taking on a playing/coaching role at the Suns in 2018.

The four-time premiership player announced his retirement in July and the club dismissed suggestions they were trying to lure him to Queensland.

The Suns AFL team’s season is over but the club’s female talent is still finding success.

Gold Coast, who are waiting to hear if they secure an AFLW licence, have had three of its academy players named in the under-18 All Australian team.

Suns academy members Kalinda Howart, Arianna Clarke and Lauren Bella earnt selection in the team on the back of impressive performances at the national under-18 championships for Queensland.

Howarth, 18, was named at half forward/flank while her Coolangatta Bluebirds QWAFL teammate Clarke, 18 was named on the bench alongside Mackay-based Bella, 17.

Gold Coast coaches must wait until new senior coach is appointed to learn their fateGold Coast coaches must wait until new senior coach is appointed to learn their fateGold Coast coaches must wait until new senior coach is appointed to learn their fate

TENSION is building among Gold Coast’s remaining coaches who have been left in limbo after the club informed them the new coach would be given a say on their future.

The coaching group were left disgruntled after a meeting with CEO Mark Evans and football manager Marcus Ashcroft this week where it was confirmed a decision on their futures would be postponed until the senior coach was appointed, potentially the week after the AFL Grand Final.

They have the club’s blessing to start looking for new jobs even though their existing contracts do not expire until October 31. Ashcroft did not return calls last night.

AFL Coaches Association CEO Mark Brayshaw said the advice to all coaches who have not been offered new deals by August 1 was to start looking elsewhere.

Interim coach Dean Solomon has declared his desire to stay at the Suns and is likely to be offered a new deal.

However, other coaches are known to be exploring options.

NEAFL and development coach Stephen Daniels has already been linked to the senior job at Southport.

There is also uncertainty over the future of Suns’ defender Rory Thompson.

Thompson has two years to run on his existing contract but has been linked to a move to Hawthorn.

Gold Coast are shopping the local junior around and have vowed to be active this off-season and explore all options.

Can't blame the club for shopping Rory around , can't have a guy on the list taking up big bucks that rarely plays .

What's so good about Daniels?
Daniels got a very average Suns NEAFL team to a Preliminary Final with weeks of having a lot of top ups, seems to be getting a lot out of the Academy lads in the NEAFL as well. Also he has only been there a year AFAIK.

I would be wanting to keep him.

Fair enough, he was definitely there last year.

Outside of Solomon and Daniels, are they really worth retaining?

This was my thought as well. Still a pretty sh*tty situation to put the coaching staff in, not even answering their calls (allegedly) but they seem to have the clubs blessing to move on, and I wonder how many of them would actually get their contracts renewed by Evans anyway?

Hopefully whoever we bring in as coach will be bringing with them their own group of assistants, or at least will have a say in who they want in the box with them, rather than just giving them a group of guys to try and make work.

I read it as Ashcroft not returning the media's calls. Pretty bad if it's the assistants.

Hearing a bit from Victorian media that clubs and fans are outraged over comments from gil mclachlan that Tom Lynch would be offered an ambassador contract if he resigned with Gold Coast.

I think it's fair the club's in nsw/qld are in a minority environment and will require more assistance from the afl then Victorian/SA/WA clubs to stay afloat.

Brisbane had salary cap extensions during thier premiership years. Sydney had the COLA.
The ambassador contract wasn't an issue for other clubs when Karmichel hunt had it, but now it's a good player it's a problem?

Lynch would only leave if he wants to go home to Vic. Money shouldn't be an issue either way.

Any way from the last figures I remember seeing several Melbourne clubs were given more AFL money then GCS so it's not like they don't get handouts.

I'm hearing the tom lynch camp is filthy that Gil has come out about the ambassador role as it has now diluted his bargaining power for a big pay day , unlike dusty this year which saw 2 clubs drive his price up , now clubs are not bothering opening up 1mil plus in there salary cap knowing full well SUns can trump them . Good news for Suns as it looks like we won't have to pay inflated price for tom , but tom not happy.

Understandable but he'll still be rewarded handsomely I'd expect gold coast to pay 800-1mill and afl top up to 1.5 Mil. Realistically would he get more then that another club.

Still would make him easily the best paid player in the game with Danger accepting unders and Dusty accepting a little less to stay at the Tigers
