Lachie Weller has more than silenced the very loud critics of his trade value when making his way from Fremantle to Gold Coast, says one of his strongest supporters.
His proud brother Maverick, speaking ahead of the younger Weller playing his 100th AFL match on Sunday, this week said that criticism around that trade, which saw the Suns give up pick two to get him back from Western Australia in 2017, had been unfair and unwarranted.

Well done Mav,

It makes me proud that Lachie is a GC product and a Suns academy product.
The first Suns academy graduate to reach 100 AFL games.

Lachie Weller - 99 games
Jesse Joyce - 64 games
Jack Bowes - 55 games
Braydon Preuss - 17 games
Connor Budarick. - 13 games
Jacob Heron - 13 games
Bailey Scott - 13 games
Jacob Dawson - 9 games
Caleb Graham - 6 games

that explains a lot.. Budarick in his first season of footy is already in the top 5 (top 4 for players to play for GCS)

Frustrating when you compare it to the top 5 from the other northern academies:

Brisbane
Charlie Cameron - 121 games
Harris Andrews - 110 games
Eric Hipwood - 88 games
Ben Keays - 42 games
Liam Dawson - 18 games

Greater Western Sydney
Jack Steele - 91 games
Jacob Hopper - 80 games
Harry Himmelberg - 78 games
Harry Perryman - 49 games
Matthew Kennedy 47 games

Sydney
Isaac Heeney - 108 games
Callum Mills - 89 games
Nick Blakey - 33 games
James Bell - 7 games
Jordan Foote - 6 games

The names above are some of the best players in the league already! I wish our academy would bear more fruit but I understand it's difficult with our population difference coupled with the large distance between our major population centres of Gold Coast, Townsville, Cairns etc.

I think with the increased investment in our academies, we are finally going to see some better players coming out of it, Alex Davies this year is an example.

The media will have to wait another week or so. They were all ready to run the ‘Suns in disarray’ article after moving on Solomon.
Lloyd, Welsh, Lyon, Healy, Campbell Brown, Shaw, Luke Russell all silent...
In an obverse way the fact the coaches were cut says quite a bit about the strength of the organisation tbh

Solly had to wait until after the game to address the players that he was leaving straight away, players were stunned, Swallow was absolutely gutted and in tears
Anyway it's done, the new guys have to deliver and it will be a mere speed bump was bloody great to watch us thump North last night

Thought he already left? Not sure why the players found it surprising at all.

Spitta here:

He's still really, really poor in these situations. Dwayne really trying to bring some life into the interview but Spitta struggling to give any energy back.

Dwayne: 'FIVE guys in Queensland in that win yesterday as well?'
Swallow: 'yeah'

Yeah Davey is not an exuberant out going bloke in the media. Need to leave these to the likes of Hughy and Brandon who are out going guys.

If you must interview a captain, put out Wittsy who is still not amazing but better in these situations.

They're turning Brodie into a mid-forward.

Gold Coast are in the midst of transforming the former no. 9 pick from the 2016 AFL draft from an inside midfielder into one who can also go forward and be a damaging forward.

The 22-year-old was touted as a future star of the competition when he arrived at Gold Coast at the end of 2016.

Brodie was labelled as the modern midfield prototype, a tall (189cm) ball-winning bull who could do the hard work inside the engine room.

Speculation has mounted that Brodie, contracted until the end of 2022, may look to exit the club via a trade at the end of 2020.

The Suns have said he remains a key part of their plans and have switched him into the forward line after spending four years developing his game in the middle.

More quotes

“Will has been going OK but Hugh Greenwood has kept him out of the side,” Suns senior coach Stuart Dew said.
“Hugh has been huge for us this year so it’s been difficult (for Brodie to break into the team).
“We are trying to get him going a bit more as a forward as well so he adds another string to his bow.
“He has had a few shots on goal (in the scratch matches) and trying to develop his game there.
“He isn’t a bad kick and he is good overhead.
“It’s a bit like (Western Bulldogs player) Mitch Wallis who was seen as an insider and couldn’t get a game there so they turned him into a damaging forward who is good one-on-one.
“That is what we have been trying in the last couple of weeks. We have been talking to him about that and hitting the scoreboard when he goes forward where he can get some mismatches.”
