So it is confirmed that we will be based in Wollongong for two weeks following the Cats game. We will take 30 players.

Mark Evans just said in the presser that we will be based at the Novotel in Wollongong with access to ovals right outside the venue and access to the university for training.

Following the match vs Sydney in R7, we will look to return to the Gold Coast that night (Saturday night). If not, we will leave Sunday morning.

Mark Evans is heading on the trip too.

No goal kicking practice for the boys at the Gong... but handy spot to pull up in the car to watch training!

Some call it the Gold Coast of the south ;)

A little bit of extra info for those of you wondering... "What the * is a Woolloongoong?"

Info Dump said:
Wollongong (/ˈwʊlənɡɒŋ/ WUUL-ən-gong), informally referred to as "The Gong", is a seaside city located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Wollongong lies on the narrow coastal strip between the Illawarra Escarpment and the Pacific Ocean, 68 kilometres (42 miles) south of central Sydney. Wollongong had an estimated urban population of 302,739 at June 2018, making it the third-largest city in New South Wales after Sydney and Newcastle, and the tenth-largest city in Australia.

The Wollongong metropolitan area extends from Helensburgh in the north to Shell Cove in the south. It sits within the Wollongong Statistical District, which covers the local authority areas of Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama, extending from the town of Helensburgh in the north, to Gerroa in the south Geologically, the city is located in the south-eastern part of the Sydney basin, which extends from Newcastle to Nowra.

Wollongong is noted for its heavy industry, its port activity and the quality of its physical setting, occupying a narrow coastal plain between an almost continuous chain of surf beaches and the cliffline of the rainforest-covered Illawarra escarpment. It has two cathedrals, churches of many denominations and the Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere. Wollongong has a long history of coal mining and industry. The city attracts many tourists each year, and is a regional centre for the South Coast fishing industry. The University of Wollongong has around 37,000 students and is internationally recognised.

The name "Wollongong" is believed to mean "seas of the South" in the local Aboriginal language, Tharawal, referring to NSW's Southern Coast[citation needed]. Other meanings have been suggested, such as "great feast of fish", "hard ground near water", "song of the sea", "sound of the waves", "many snakes" and "five islands".

It's the birthplace of such Internationally recognised names such as - Brett & Shane Lee, Scott Chipperfield, Wayne Gardner, Luke Wilkshire, Trent Johnston, Sally Fitzgibbons, Jordan Stalker, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, John Jarratt, some spud that moderates a football forum and many many rugby players.

Aside from the current top 22 who are the additional 8 players we take?

It's actually quite hard to select another 8. Obviously need some flexibility to cover various positions but also want to reward good form.
I'd probably go with the below

Defenders
Joyce
Hombsch

Mids
Fiorini
Brodie

Forwards
Lemmens
Rankine
Corbett
Wright

That way if we have our remaining squad on the Gold Coast perhaps we could have scratch matches against other teams based on the Gold Coast? Not sure about isolation rules here but would be nice. Still gives some young guys a chance against decent opposition in their best positions.

Dawson - Graham - Towey
Mclennan - Burgess - Heron
Sharp - Miles - Murdoch
Flanders - Farrar - Ellis
Rosas - Conroy - Ace

Smith - Fletcher - Schoenfeld

If Lemmens partner is expecting, I can see Flanders going in Lemmens place.

Forgot the young fella.
Conroy and Murtagh tall forwards, wowee!
Just saw a Broadie scratch match which had a number of present and former Suns Academy members. Probably Davies and Gore look the most developed and we’re rested at half time. Fyfe , Reeves ,Selsby amd Sleeman all had good moments. Of the former Nutting and Boakye were out there. Guy called Moncreiff looked like a player if recruiters were looking for a key forward

Interesting to hear Mark Evans/Stuey Dew say that part of the reason we're heading to the Gong has to do with it offering similar conditions to the Gold Coast. Let's be honest though, we're only going to be there for 14 days so it shouldn't really affect our performances much at all. The AFL will ensure we have access to an AFL standard training oval, gym and recovery facilities. That's all we need.

Back to the Goldy on July 18.

Auld just said on SEN that they want 2-3 games in NT possibly next month. He did mention they would like Suns to play in Darwin.

Absolutely. Our zone is up there so would be good to reconnect.
It would also give Jeffrey another reason to want to join us later this year. Knowing you'll get the opportunity to play in front of your friend and family in your hometown is a nice little incentive for a kid who is contemplating his draft options.
