If the Suns were performing the way they are performing now in Tasmania they would be getting crowds under 5000. Even when things are going perfectly a 15,000 crowd is hard to get in Tasmania, and there is zero room for growth, unlike Gold Coast.
That’s Complete rubbish that has no substance we have two fifo clubs playing down here at the moment that are pretty average teams with no connection to Tasmania that regularly play against the low drawing interstate teams getting close to comparable crowds to gws-suns and when we had our VFL team last time we were drawing crowds between 7-10 thousand for vfl games ! and the growth statement people like to make well look at both Brisbane and swans been around almost 40 years neither have really grown in to power houses of field have they the growth thing gets massively over stated it’s about tv rights for afl nothing else!

Other than their first year draft concessions what handouts have they had?
Did you forget the extra list spots ,access to 1 free agent from each club, larger salary cap , direct access to 17 year olds , mini drafts ,accademy picks theses are the things they have had access to since start up ! Quite a bit when you look at it isn’t it .

Hawthorn got plenty of average crowds in Tasmania despite being super successful.

Yeah and it all should have been more then enough to build a competitive football team GWS have managed to do so after losing just as many players!

So because it didn't the Suns should be punished forever?

Also that was the first time the AFL ever attempted something like this, so in hindsight it seems like the concessions were not "more than enough". Hell GWS got more than that and GWS have not won a flag.

First time attempted ?? Could have sworn they started the bears on Gold Coast 30 years ago 😂thought they may have learnt a few things from that debacle obviously not though! And Yes they do need to be given more help even though it’s been largely through there own mismanagement but surely for the fairness of a competition it’s has to stop at some point does it not ?

and I would agree with you, had they been getting help from the AFL for the last 5 years but the AFL have done nothing to really help them in a long time.

Arguably Carlton and other clubs at the hit-the-draft-hard arc of their cycle at the time got the rough end of the pineapple when the expansion teams were brought in.

Haven't the club had enough gulps from that well?
Why should anyone, including the AFL give them charity when they let Jarryd Lyons leave? Desperately need experienced players and let a solid player go.

Just had 35 touches in a young side that just went to 3rd. 24.5 touches and over 7 clearances for a rubbish suns side last season and spent time in the NEAFL for lack of running power. Still cracking 22+ touches and 4.8 clearances in a quality Brisbane side.

So long as they delist players they need they deserve nothing from the AFL.

That trade was insane. I mean Dew must really hold a grudge to get rid of Lyon like that when Gold Coast desperately need a player like that.

Why the flipping heck did they get Lyons go.

36 touches, 9 clearances, 9 tackles, 6 intercepts, 39 pressure acts and a goal.

Let go for nothing from a Suns team crying out for experience and grunt.

Not trying to s&$t on the suns cause I do feel bad for them. But we got Jared Lyons from them for absolutely nothing. Not saying he is an A grader or anything... The suns should be trying to hold players at his age and presence.

Priority pick ain’t going to help (as everyone has stated)

it's no surprise that it took someone like fagan who came in to the lions and said "we've got what we need to compete here" and turned that ship around. people were saying they'd never be competitive again and needed priority picks only 3 years ago

if anything they need an exemption on the off field soft cap and be able to beef up their off field with people who don't have loser/victim mentalities and build from there. no point with a player salary cap exemption as they shouldn't be anywhere near their cap currently and should be able to frontload a lot of future contracts

... they have limited access to anything and their academy i dont believe have produced a player. They also recruit terribly so many reserve grade players. Face it Gold Coast is not a sporting town ...
Somewhat wrong - there are 7 Gold Coast raised players on their list (out of 12 in the whole AFL). However their past recruitment has been poor e.g. overlooking Zorko tearing it up weekly right under their noses for Broadbeach, winning 4 consecutive B&F's yet the Suns ignored him year after year until finally picking him up as a zone selection - only to immediately on-trade him to Brisbane, where he has won 4 more B&F's!

I don't believe Gold Coast will remain bad forever. Like all other clubs, they will eventually rise up the ranks and they have already shown, on the very rare occasions they've been competitive, that they will attract decent crowds

Another thing is that their stadium GA area also should needs to be expanded - I've found any half decent grandstand seat quite expensive.

What they need is Roughie! A player from a winning culture to help them. need a collingwood 17-18 off season review. Bring in Teague as assisstant and Ratten. New recruiters. The AFL needs to give them some money to improve facilities so players actually stay. Also @ProfesorKnowall compare that players raised on the Gold Coast to Hobart or Tassie.

There's 9 from Hobart and 19 from Launceston and the rest of North Tassie on AFL lists (compared to 41 for all of Qld).

I wouldn't mind a Tasmanian AFL team at all if it's done properly (along with reducing numbers to 16 on field) - but not at the expense of Gold Coast, which is in a much larger growth area.
